Lake Wallenpaupack

As I prepare to leave for a little get-away, I'm happy to report the sun is shining all over me. Renewed, restored and alive. The lake awaits me and believe it or not, I will hate to see the summer end.

Hate Airports?

I loathe the airport experience so much anymore that this summer I actually drove seven hours to a vacation destination. If you feel violated at the airport, you have to read this hysterical but oh so true article entitled Gratitude by Lee Woodruff.

Wanna Take My Vacation?

Surprisingly enough I returned from Cape Cod to find the vacation I had just taken written up in the NY Times travel section. One slight difference is I stayed in Falmouth at a B&B and took the ferry to Martha's Vineyard for day trips.

The trip was great and so easy to do if you are on a budget. We stayed at the Chapoquoit Inn and had nothing less than a gourmet breakfast every morning prepared lovingly by the Innkeeper, Kim. Please check out her cookbook on the site it makes a lovely gift and it's filled with easy, gourmet recipes.

Click here to see the photos I took on the trip.

Leaving

Tomorrow we are leaving for Cape Cod and we can't wait. The plan is to leave at 7am, go have breakfast at a local diner and get on the road. Yours truly is driving, map and GPS in hand. We have a cooler with scones, chicken salad sandwiches and fresh fruit so when we stop it's a picnic. The drive should take close to 7 hours but a beach and fabulous B&B await us. Pics to follow- Ciao!

Looking Forward

(Me this morning)

Sometimes I think back and wonder where this one is or where that one is, especially old BF's (boyfriends). For a moment I think about how nice it would be to talk about the "good ole days" with a person who was actually there. I wonder if they appreciate what I brought to the relationship the way I appreciate what they brought? Do they have the same interpretation of how things went down both good and bad?

Of course reality sinks in like quick sand and I remember you can never go back. I'm different than I use to be and I require real emotional connection. Unless those people have grown and changed at the rate I have chances are we would have nothing in common.

Today I remain facing forwarding, looking ahead to next week when I leave for the Cape but mostly just living in today.

Train Travel

Orient Express

For years now I've longed for a trip on the Orient Express. I knew someone who took the trip and it seemed fabulous. Recently, Town and Country magazine featured a piece on luxurious train travel and the prices were out of this world, far beyond my reach anyway. Below I've posted another great article on train travel and the Amtrak sleep car seems more within reach. If I can't have the art deco surroundings of the Orient Express, this might be the next best thing.

Take the virtual tour of the Amtrak sleeper car here.

See photos here of luxury train travel. The cars are elegant!

This post is part of our series ranking the top 25 bygone products and trends we'd like to see return.

There's something romantic about train travel. Is it the memories of the model train running on tracks around the Christmas tree, the luminous artwork in "The Polar Express"? The clips from old movies of the rich and fashionable strolling down the platform, carrying luggage in a gloved hand?

Maybe it's the names of the trains. The Silver Meteor which has run from New York to Miami since 1939. then there's The Cascades, The Adirondacker, The Heartland Flyer.

The sound of the wheels on the tracks, the blur as the country slides by outside the window of the dining car, has universal appeal. Train trinkets abound: On May 9th, there were 90,081 listings under "trains" on eBay, 12,109 under "railroad," with more bids than one might expect in the current economy.

But train travel is more than just a novelty. It is econ-friendly, for starters. Then there are more sights accessible by rail in the U.S. than most of us might assume - including the Grand Canyon, Niagara Falls, Yellowstone Park, and Disney World. The last full service railroad in the U.S. is the Alaska Railroad (http//alaskarailroad.com/arrc53.html) which offers special events including a beer train.

An Amtrak North America Railpass allows unlimited stops to over 900 destinations in both the U.S. AND Canada and is valid for up to 30 consecutive days. As gas prices rise and air travel gets more arduous, this may be just the ticket.

Think of all the forms of transportation Americans once depended upon. Which would you like to see return?

If the idea of overnight travel by train intrigues you - and especially if you're traveling with children, it just might - you can take a virtual tour of Amtrak sleeper service options (which include meals - and sometimes an in-room toilet and shower) for two to four people.
Travel by rail was at its peak in the 19th and early 20th centuries and it's just possible that it can make a comeback. Can Amtrak Travel Green? It's their position that train travel contributes less greenhouse gasses "per passenger mile" than either car or train travel? It isn't clear how close to full the train has to be for the calculation to work out that way.

What is clear is that there's lots of information available, including J. David Ingles' book, "Guide to North American Railroad Hot Spots (Railroad Reference Series), John Pitt's, "USA by Rail - 6th Bradt," and Karen Ivory's, "Eight Great American Rail Journeys - A Travel Guide." There are also companies, like North American Rail Specialists, that advise about rail tour options and know which hotels are closest to the railroad stations.

It's tempting.

Destination: Cape Cod

I am finally, finally, finally going to the Cape. Cape Cod has been a dream destination of mine for YEARS. For the first time in my life, I'm staying at a bed and breakfast. I never had an interest in a B&B before but this year along with my refusal to board a plane a bed and breakfast seemed like a good idea because I didn't want to chance an iffy hotel stay. Gas prices are crazy but my car gets great millage (Thanks Toyota) so we will be driving.

Our itinerary is simple; ferry to Martha's Vineyard, shopping, walks on the beach and dinner out. At night we will watch DVD's. The place we are going too serves a gourmet breakfast everyday with scrumptious entrees like lemon pancakes and crème crulee French toast. It sounds like my sweet and simple idea of heaven.

Monaco

The Prince is marrying and no it isn't to me. I loved Monaco with a passion when I was there and would easily agree to live out my days seaside, alas I wasn't asked and yes I'm frankly... a little bitter.

According to the French media claims that modelizer and father of two illegitimate kiddies, Prince Albert of Monaco, will marry his girlfriend, former South African Olympic swimmer Charlene Wittstock, in September.

The prince is 50 years old and is now just settling down!

He also probs wants a legit heir to the throne.

His two kids out of wedlock can't step up because super Catholic Monaco is ruled by strict succession rules. No bastards on their throne!

The last time Monaco celebrated a wedding of its ruling prince was in 1956, when his father Rainier married Oscar-winning American actress Grace Kelly. (source)

The Monaco I saw- breathtaking.

Recovering

It was a grueling day in NYC. I'm feeling a lot better today. The weather really held out for us and I was so grateful. It can do whatever it wants now I just wanted to get to NYC without rain or snow. With that, I have to be honest about my day.

When we arrived in the city we went to this restaurant called Mars2112. I heard about it from one of the kids I work with and of course being a kid, she failed to mention the food is awful. The atmosphere is super galactic and fun but the people working there are NOT in character and they really takes away from it for me. Aside from wearing a star trek like uniform, they were about as into being there as anyone working on a Saturday during the holiday season.

American Girl Place was a nightmare with droves of people and nowhere to rest. We did do a lot of shopping and their displays are gorgeous. The girls got an adorable photo taken with their dolls. It's darling. The show we saw was wonderful but after standing in yet another line for an hour, I have to say "Afternoon Tea" at American Girl was a real bummer complete with a rude waitress. I spoke to the manager and we got loads of free food and champagne but I felt so rushed. We guzzled our tea and left for Rockefeller Center. It was far from the experience it should have been.

I'm so glad my Mom got to NYC with the kids and I took loads for pictures we will have forever but I would do it differently next time. I guess the moral of this story is anytime you go to a place that caters to children, expect long lines. The girls enjoyed the day through their innocent eyes and that's really what it was all about. Today for my birthday they gave me a jewelry holder shaped like a female form in a long gown. I love it and they know their Aunt Lizzy so well. I'm seeing to that.

Looking Forward

I'm always writing and thinking about building the relationship with my nieces. I'm lucky, I get to spend a lot of time with them and I know the memories I have with my mother as a kid have shaped the person I am today.

When I was a little girl, we didn't have a lot of money for travel but every year my mother would take me to NYC for dinner and a show. As a result, I have built my life around a love of NY and theatre. I have shared this passion with every important person in my life.

Yesterday we finalized the plans. We are taking the kids to NYC in December, one day before my birthday. I can't wait to see the Xmas decorations, Rockefeller Center, eat lunch, see a show the whole touristy/fun deal. My nieces are 6 and 8 years old and they will love it. I know they will want to go back as soon as possible and Aunt Lizzy can tempt them with trips to NYC for years to come! We are so excited to continue this family tradition- we can't wait to go.

The New Nazi's

"At first I assumed maybe it was some weird security drill? A few of us asked what was going on, and got terse answers, like, "Security review." WTF? 5 minutes passed. 10, 15, 20. The two teen Japanese tourists about ten feet behind me looked utterly dazed -- welcome to America, guys."

Going to the airport can be a downright frightening and humiliating experience since 9/11 and that's due to the treatment we receive from our fellow Americans! I'm still unnerved at these so-called security check points and like a character in Schindler's List, I feel grateful when I get through without anyone addressing me. Why are we tolerating this again? Give some people a paycheck and they are willing to do just about anything even to a fellow citizen. I would imagine it was a lot like that when the Nazi's were recruiting members.

Drive Safely

On a holiday weekend you read & hear, "drive safely" where ever you go. Recently, Hulk Hogans son, Nick (17) landed a close friend in ICU in critical condition. Nick's friend, John (22) just made it back from Iraq and now it looks like he might not survive the car wreck. Speed demon Nick walked away with barely a scratch or did he? Of course the Hogans are facing legal woes either way, but Nick will have this on his conscience the rest of his life.

I don't like to tell people how to drive. While I do have a commercial drivers license I know everyone considers themselves good drivers but here is the thing....people pick up bad habits without even realizing it. As a CDL license holder I'm taken back out on the road every four years to be retrained. The last time most people were out on the road with someone holding a clipboard, they were sixteen. The reason I'm retrained is because I'm never permitted to hang on to any bad habits for long. Thank goodness!

I can't emphasize how important doing the speed limit is. The speed limit is there because it is the proven number that will keep accidents to a minimum. The speed limit isn't there to annoy you, it is there to save your life and the lives of people like Nick's friend, John.

Driving reckless with me in your car is a deal breaker. Plain and simple. I have too much to live for and if someone can't respect the value of my life they can count me out of theirs. There is no where I am in that much of a hurry to get too.

I wonder if John can ever forgive Nick? Will John's family ever find forgiveness in their hearts? I can't even fathom what these people are going through and why- because Nick considered himself a race car driver (He drove in a few races)? Nick's behavior, like any wreckless speed demon just exhibits a pathetic level of immaturity and an inability to place value on anything but your own selfish whims. Long after Nick's family BUYS him out of this legal problem, Nick's friend John may or may not have his life to live.

Drive safely.

Nick's car "inexplicably left the roadway," jumped a median and crashed into a palm tree.

LA Pics

ClassyLAChicks.jpg
Crazy pic courtesy of some random myspace page.

Finally, I'm posting the pics from my LA/Vegas trip. As far as LA goes the weather was AWESOME. The traffic and cars on the other hand? Not so good. Really though I loved LA. Vegas and the desert especially were amazing. The sad thing about Vegas is the tearing down of all the old cool retro buildings and these massive shopping malls called Hotel/Casinos taking their place. The shopping is great but The Flamingo must have been slick in it's day.

On a serious note, while in Cali I had the opportunity to speak at a girls juvenile detention center on alcoholism and it's effects on the family. I spoke to a group of girls from the most tragic family situations you can imagine. The experience was incredible and it was completely my pleasure to hang out and talk with the girls and the amazing staff.

I had a lot of high points on this trip and made some pretty cool purchases for myself and the girls. Speaking of my nieces, I talked to them often and missed them like crazy. What they say is true- home is where the heart is and I could never see myself living too far away from them.

We drove past the Hoover dam. It was 110 degrees that day.

This is the view of the pool from our hotel room.

PoolTimeParisLV.jpg
The pool was so, so nice. It was the best part of Vegas. I'm not a big gambler so pool time was everything too me during the day. After a while I had to go back into the room because of the heat, but for the most part I felt wonderful with the low humidity.

ParisLV.bmp
The Eiffel Tower was next to the pool. Very cheesy, very Vegas. lol

InNOutBurger.jpg
Not exactly healthy eating, but I had to try an In-N-Out burger while in LA.

TheBurgers.jpg
One of these juicy burgers belonged to me and it was as tasty as it looks.

GrandCanyonHotel.jpg
The ranch was a really cool place.
Too bad the AC in the room didn't work and it was 110 degrees. We were unable to stay and got a full refund. The idea was to sleep here and then go to the new sky walk at the Grand Canyon. Get this- it cost $50.00 PER PERSON just to use THE ROAD that takes you too the Grand Canyon (The road is not paved either). Once at the sky walk you're charged another $25.00 and you are NOT permitted to take pictures. Instead they take your picture and charge you. NO THANKS! We decided right away that wasn't happening for us. The woman who ran the ranch/hotel told us most Americans pass on it and only foreigners are bothering. She said most Americans consider it a huge rip-off.

GrandCanyonWestRoom.jpg
This was my room. Pretty cool except it was sweltering.

ZumaBeach.bmp
Ahhh Zuma beach. What can I say, I loved it.

LifegaurdZuma.jpg
Mr. hot lifeguard. More of what made Zuma beach so great.

TheGrove.jpg
The Grove is a great place to shop and I spent a lot of time and $$$ there. It's also the place where I had a celebrity siting! Yes I did! If there was ONE PERSON I was dying to see while in LA it was this guy. I thought I was going to have to hit a club to see him in person but he was walking along just as natural as can be right there in The Grove. I was so star struck I forgot his name for a minute. I didn't dare approach him. Just seeing him was enough. Wanna know who I saw? Check out his picture below....

DJSteveGP4Surfing.jpg
DJ Steve Aoki!!! Steve is the big brother of top model Devon Aoki and an entrepreneur in his own right. In this pic (courtesy of Cobrasnake) Steve works the crowd in his famed green pants. The same pants he was wearing when I spotted him. (gasp)

AmericanGirlLA.jpg
American Girl located at The Grove. Of course I had to pick up "Los Angeles" American Girl tee shirts for my nieces.

TroubadourTomMorello.jpg
Seeing Tom Morello perform at The Troubadour was amazing however I realized something and that is some things are better when they happen organically. I didn't feel like saying hello to Tom at a "meet and greet" after the show. I had done that in Philly weeks prior and met him personally years before in NYC. This time I was happy with just seeing the show. Later in the evening we returned to the Troubadour where Julie made friends with the doorman earlier in the evening. He let us go upstairs to Tom's after party. BTW- this person was there....
54-1.jpg

That's actor Breckin Meyer (Clueless, Can't Hardly Wait). Again, I just wasn't about to approach Tom as a "fan, party crasher, stalker" type. Julie said hello to Tom I hide out then left as quickly as possible. Tom was off to get pancakes. I actually reconnected with Tom's roadie who I had become acquainted with in Philly. We agreed to stay in touch so that was really nice.

*Another celebrity siting was this fine actress coming out of our nail place....JenniferCo_Grant_11446079_400.jpg

Actress Jennifer Coolidge. (Legally Blonde, Epic Movie) BTW- she was driving a Porsche.

If you asked me what my favorite area was I would have to say Beverly Hills. Rodeo Drive is very touristy. Melrose Ave and Robertson Boulevard were more fun for shopping but Beverly Hills really is lovely. It's so clean and spotless. My favorite location had to be the Beverly Hills Hotel and Bungalows. This place is stunning. You are literally transported back in time to the glamour of old Hollywood. I loved it. We had coffee in the cafe and the waiter was telling us about a man that actually lives at the hotel full time even though he has a home! Where are these men? Is he single? I don't care if he's a bit eccentric, I can work with that in between room service.

Quick Update: Beverly Hills

I spent yesterday in Beverly Hills and Rodeo Drive, we even took a drive through Bel Air. The homes are amazing, but I have to say the most fabulous thing about this place is the weather. It is fantastic. I don't have big frizzy hair here- no humidity! I have never broken a sweat even in 90 degrees. Julie bought a Louis Vuitton bag and some Gucci sunglasses to go with her Gucci bag. All lovely items as you can imagine. Afterwards we went to the Beverly Hills Hotel for coffee and more shopping. Finally starved and ready for dinner, we went to Dukes Malibu for dinner. It was right by the ocean and the coconut shrimp were delicious. I'm taking pics so I'll post more later regarding Vegas and the cowboy ranch. Ciao!

Shoplifting in LA

Julie and I were shopping in Larchmont Village today. In a little boutique she tried on a long pink cotton dress. Perfect for Vegas we thought, so into the dressing room she goes. I'm sitting there drinking an ice tea checking out the baubles in a case right in front of me. I slipped on a bubble ring admiring it and wondering the cost. Just then Julie called me in the dressing room to check out the fit of the dress. She didn't like the way bust area was fitting and she wanted me to give it a try. The dress fit me and we debated whether or not I needed it (I don't) considering I brought dresses with me for Vegas.

Cut to an hour later. We're at a great beauty supply store. I'm at the register buying a few must-haves. I look down at my hand and guess what I see? AH! I snatch the ring off my finger and throw it in my purse like I'm on the FBI's 10 Most Wanted list. I confessed too Julie but no, I did not return it.

I'm Outta Here

In one minute it will be July 10th and at 5 AM I leave town for three weeks. I can't believe it's finally here. I'm concerned about getting through the airport so I only packed my little bomb. *Kidding* Christ only knows what I'll be pulled out of line for, probably a deadly lip gloss or something.

I'll hit the ground running once in LA. We have plans for tomorrow evening. A live concert and fireworks, it will be wonderful I'm sure.

I don't know how much blogging I'll do even though it's pretty much an addiction. The plan is lots of picture taking and that means exciting blog posts for later (I hope). Vegas and the Grand Canyon are where I hope to get some great shots obviously, but the beaches are beautiful as well.

This isn't good-bye just so long and a much welcomed change of pace for me. *Hugs*

Countdown to Vacation: 18 Days Left

Posted by Liz at 08:23 AM | Feedback (5)

June 05, 2007

Five Cheap Travel Trips

1. China

· Why now: "China remains the top travel bargain," says Arthur Frommer. "No one can justify not immediately signing up for a trip." The primary reason, he says, is the currency exchange rate. The U.S. dollar goes far: You'll find that even four-star hotels won't strain your budget. The country has also become more tourist-friendly, with more tour operators working in the country than ever before. Enjoy a stroll along the Great Wall or browse for hand-dyed silks and jade jewelry on Shanghai's Nanjing Road.

· Frommer's Deal: Explore five Chinese cities on a 12-day "Splendid China" or "Historic China" tour from San Francisco-based China Focus Travel. Prices start at $988, including round-trip airfare from San Francisco (tack on $200 for New York departures). You can spend a day in philosopher Confucius' hometown of Qufu, visit a silk factory and pick tea leaves at a plantation. You'll lodge at four-star hotels throughout, including the Taishan International Hotel, which offers Western-style hotel amenities like high-speed Internet access and satellite TV.

2. Buenos Aires

· Why now: "If you can, choose countries where the currency is weak," says Pauline. Argentina, where the exchange rate is three pesos to the dollar, is no exception. (Before Argentina devalued its currency in 2002, one peso was worth $1 U.S. -- and higher local prices sent Argentineans here for a bargain vacation.) You can gorge yourself on the country's specialty steaks, split a bottle of Argentinean Malbec wine and then tango 'til the wee hours at the city's tango clubs -- all without putting a dent in your wallet. Our summer is the Argentine winter, so you'll encounter the best bargains and mild springlike temperatures, says Pauline. Looking for a hotter vacation? Schedule your trip for the fall or winter.

· Frommer's Deal: Spend seven days exploring the city with a Buenos Aires air and hotel package from Gate 1 Travel, starting at $799 per person. You'll stay at your choice of seven hotels, including the Hotel Emperador, where guests receive a cell phone for use during their stay.

3. Orlando, Fla.

· Why now: New budget travel providers have hit the scene, says Arthur, so airfare and hotel packages have become increasingly affordable this year as the competition heats up. That's good news, because your major expense -- theme park tickets -- isn't getting any cheaper. (For a family of four, you'd spend a total of $916 on five-day Disney Park Hopper passes.) "Some of the best bargains are currently off-site hotels," says Pauline, so look for a package that includes a car rental.

· Frommer's Deal: Try the "Orlando on a Budget" package from eLeisureLink.com. For as little as $318 a person, you'll get round-trip airfare, a midsize rental car and five nights at the hotel of your choice. (Depending on your travel dates, you'll have as many as 60 to choose from, including four-star Regal Palms Resort where you'll stay in a three-bedroom townhouse with a fully-equipped kitchen.) Click here for deals on theme parks.

4. London

· Why now: No American would ever call London a bargain destination, given the current exchange rate of one British pound to nearly $2 in the U.S. The city has become even pricier over the last five years, as the dollar has fallen 39% against the pound. That said, new budget providers on the scene are aiming to make it more affordable, Pauline says. So don't let cost concerns prevent you from scheduling a trip to the Tower of London or book tickets for the city's bustling theater scene.

· Frommer's Deal: Stretch your travel dollar further with a six-day air-and-hotel package from Gate 1 Travel for as little as $499. You'll stay at your choice of seven hotels, including the Waldorf Hilton where each room sports a plasma-screen TV and guests can enjoy an afternoon tea in the hotel's patisserie and Champagne bar.

5. Egypt

· Why now: The Great Pyramid at Cairo? The Valley of the Kings at Luxor? Egypt truly is the must-do trip of a lifetime, says Arthur. Travel there by Europeans has always been strong, he says, and it's picking up momentum in the U.S. (It's a scorcher in summer, cautions Pauline, so plan your trip for mid- to late fall.) To entice more travelers, plenty of tour operators are offering phenomenal deals. The dollar is also strong in Egypt: Before the government allowed the currency value to float in 2003 to help relieve its trade deficit, one U.S. dollar was worth four Egyptian pounds. Cambria: Another Stop On Our Vacation

Cambria is one of the most beautiful coastal communities in the nation. Located in Northern San Luis Obispo County, just 6 miles south of the magnificent Hearst Castle, they welcome people from all over the world. The temperature is a glorious 50- 70 degrees year round. Julie and I can't wait too explore the town and beaches. The following photos are taken from the Cambria website.

Cypress Inn, Doris Day & Us

On the road too see Big Sur and in a departure from the Grand Canyon Ranch setting, Julie and I are booked at the lovely Cypress Inn (co-owned by Doris Day). Elegant and dog friendly, we plan to languish in the stunning beach town of Carmel along with Julie's doggy, Fizz. We have already decided afternoon tea is a must!

Saddle Up Partner, We're Going To a Ranch

Julie and I are now booked for the Grand Canyon West Ranch! Since we want to be on the west side of the Grand Canyon, near the sky walk, these are the best accommodations.

"But Liz, you and Julie aren't exactly the cowgirl types!"

True enough, but we are up for the adventure. First of all the area is breath taking and we want to enjoy that without wasting time driving in the car looking for places to eat etc.. We are staying in a cabin that has two beds, air-conditioning, a bathroom and a fireplace. You eat three meals a day at the ranch dining hall with the cowboys! At night there is a campfire and singing under the stars. Everything you need in one place. We are so excited. I've already promised my Mom we won't try anything too daring like roping cattle (yea right). Emergency room visits are not on the itinerary.

Ranch lodging includes tepees.

Check It Out While in L.A.

* Fred 62- A diner in Julie's neighborhood where the crowd is a mix of pierced and tattooed button-down executives, families, small business owners, artists, writers and late-night club-goers. The after-hours bar crowd is particularly good for people-watching. Recent guests have also included an endless parade of celebrities, such as Ben Stiller, Drew Barrymore, Mike D., Naomi Watts, Britney Spears, Cameron Diaz, Mandy Moore and Heather Graham.

I'm So Excited/ The Grand Canyon

Part of the itinerary on my summer vacation this July includes a trip the Grand Canyon. While I might not seem like the rugged outdoorsy type, I actually adore being around nature. Maybe it's the Sagittarius in me, but all aspects of gorgeous scenery delight me.

I have always wanted to visit the desert. Like a lot of people I've seen the desert in movies and it's vastness amazes me. The desert has that dangerous quality. It's not like being lost on a highway or in a city, you could perish in the desert.

We are going to visit an Indian reservation that happens to be the new location of the Grand Canyon Skywalk. I can't promise I will have the nerve to walk this plank but we're planing on loads of pics and video either way.

Idea! Julie and I should write a script ALA Tarantino style, about two women that cross the desert but end up at war with each other. Knock down, drag 'em out gun slinging stuff. Maybe throw in a hot guy and a sleazy motel! I know exactly who I want to play me (don't laugh) and who I want to play Julie. Stay Tuned!

Californication

The ticket is purchased the suit case is open and calling my name. Have I mentioned this July, I'm headed to L.A. and Vegas for three , count 'em three full weeks? I'm so excited.

My very dear and old friend Julie lives in Los Feliz and has invited me to come for a visit. We're going to pack up her SAAB, throw on some depends and hit the road to Vegas!! For years now I have been dying to see the desert. I'm going to take loads and loads of pictures so stay tuned.

The most excellent part about this is Julie and I have a lot in common. We have the same taste in things and that makes hanging out feel like second nature. I can't wait too see her and talk and talk and talk. This familiar friend is like the sister I never had.

Wish Me God's Speed

This summer I'm heading out too Los Angeles and Las Vegas for a glorious vacation totalling three full weeks (More about that later)! Yay me, right? Well Forbes magazine just listed it's top most dangerous airports as if flying wasn't a big enough nuisance and LAX and Philadelphia International of course made the list. LAX boasts 95 incidents, eight serious. Philadelphia International for it's size has a whopping 36 incidents, two serious which they say is very high.

I feel certain some of the "incidents" must include the rude baggage handlers that work at Philadelphia as well as the belligerent parking lot attendants. Don't get me wrong it doesn't fluster me, I convinced myself long ago that it's the down-to-earth charm unique only to the city of brotherly love. Usually Philly makes the list for fattest residents, best cheese steaks or most police brutality. It's nice too see were staking our claim in the friendly skies as well.

I have to go into the hospital every day till I leave Saint Petersburg for 1 hour to recieve treatment...on top of all the medications I have to take all day. The hook me up to a machine and make me breathe through it for an hour, alos hooking me up to an IV. I am so fucking weak and tired. My fever was 104 when I checked in.

Galway Bay

One minute I'm planning a vacation to London and then it hit me- what about Ireland? I've never been so I mentioned to me Mum (who has been many times) and she highly recommended Galway Bay. Apparently, it's a quaint 700 year old seaside town and it's known for lovely people, fresh fish and breathtaking scenery. I would stay at a charming b&b and escape to the shore everyday to read and write. The area has inspired many Irish poets and writers. In the evening I'll seek out some nightlife at a local pub where I will trash talk George W. to people who wouldn't be stupid enough to vote for him given the option!

By now everyone has seen the clip of those miserable bitches Paris Hilton and Brandon Davis trashing Lindsey Lohan. I can see why Nicole Ritchie moved on from Paris. Sometimes you just get tired of dumbing down for a so-called friend who won't smarten up. I feel ya Nicole girl, I feel ya.

Gawker Stalker

Where have I been? I just saw this Gawker Stalker story on the news the other night because some people are trying to put an end to it. The Gawker has a page telling you where and when celebs are located complete with a map! Right away, I picture myself sitting at home with my computer. BAM! Ethan Hawke is posted at W. 19th Street! What do I do? What do I do? I hop in a cab and race over to the scene,

"Driver! I'm panting, "Get me to 14 W. 19th Street and step on it!"

Then I arrive and ......I......well.... stand on the sidewalk and stare? I can't imagine this, it seems absurd. I've seen many famous faces in NYC. Once I came face to face with Bruce Vilanch in a theatre. At the time he was doing Hollywood Squares and I told him he was hysterical on the show. He said thank you, he seemed very sweet- end of story.

I suppose the site is called Gawker for a reason and they expect thier readership wants to do some real time gawking. Personally, I believe it's horribly rude to stare. Unless there are certain circumstances involved, I would feel silly approaching a total stranger, even if they are famous. I don't think gawking is for me. I better stick with the anonymous fun of reading blogs. :D

Mark & Sally & Musto

Lst weekend I headed to NYC to meet up with my friend Mark. Mark is a great model, DJ, musican and writer. Super sweet and super funny, we laugh all the time. He introduced me to his wonderful pal, manhatten hairstylist -Sally who would later end up cutting my hair 9pm on a Saturday night!

I wasn't a half an hour in the city and low and behold I see Michael Musto of the Village Voice on the sidewalk with some people. The ironic thing about this is I have been DYING to meet Musto, but have been unable to pin him down...so to speak. He was taller than I expected so he was easy to spot and I knew the gods were smiling on me. I had to go for it. I went up to him and introduced myself as the person who emails him. I was shaking like a leaf and trying to appear non stalker-ish. It took a sec and then it clicked! He said, "Hi Liz, I love you" and he hugged me. I was stunned. I just waved and walked off as my life was now complete. I did have my camera with me, but I wasn't about to dig through my bag asking him to wait, then pose with me on the sidewalk. As my witness, I made Mark relive every detail all evening long. Thank goodness he is a pal and understood the gravity of what had just taken place.

We had a great weekend. Yummy cocktails whipped up by Mark and I love my new hair cut (Thanks again Sally)! I can't wait to go back and see everyone.

Finding someone that you can obsess with about certain people isn't easy believe me. So when I found out Molly was coming to NYC, I had to go and meet up for lunch. Face to face we hashed over the same topics we text message about on a daily basis. Pizza at Lombardi's, talk of our mutial gay boyfriends, topped off with a trip to Sephora and MAC? I found a soulmate.

I adore the south of France. Frankly, I prefer it over Paris. Monaco and it's people remind me of walking down Park Ave. only far more elegant.

I can completely see what a certain Philadelphian of yester year saw in the country of Monoco.

A Wicked Day

Today I had an opportunity to go to NYC and see a show. Of course, I grabbed at the chance.

First I made a b-line for Canal St. That’s right, "knock off" central here I come! I was able to purchase bean Tiffany & Co. earrings and a tag bracelet. I was thrilled. On this hazy day, Canal St. was packed but I got great deals. Its rows and rows of Korean stores and they hide the bootleg stuff and they call into a back room or space to look at the "designer stuff" and walkie-talkie one another to keep an eye out for trouble as in the cops. It's a real adventure. Its like being in another country. A cute vendor caught me staring at his Che t-shirt. He smiled I smiled back and asked him where he got the shirt. He pointed me in a nearby direction and I picked up the long coveted Che tee that I wear as I type.

At 2pm I head to the theatre so see Wicked. What an entertainging and political show. Turns out the wicked witch of the east and Glenda the good witch go way back. The story isn't what you thought. Judy Garland's "Dorothy" only told half of it. According to this musical there was a lot more and it turns out the woman of OZ were dealing with many of the same issues we deal with today as sisters. Interesting as well, is the fact that the Wizard has no real power and rules the people my instilling fear. (What does that remind you of?) I highly recommend this show and if I may make a prediction, Joey MacIntyre (Former New Kid on the Block) will rise again as a mainstream star. He was out of this world and without a doubt, one of the most gifted male voices I have heard in a long time. The crowd was on its feet and Joey recieved a gigantic round of applause. Its nice to see a former child star who has real talent working his craft and succeeding.

By the way, after a month of a hacking cough, I now have a sore throat.

Summer Fun

I heard from two friends tonight who shared with me their summer adventures thus far. Aaron traveled 1700 miles up and down the East coast from Detroit Motor City. He loved NYC and was really moved and overwhelmed by it all. I know what a thrill that town is your first time out and Aaron made it all over from Wall St. to the Bronx. He promises to come back this way so we can hangout.

Evan from Swarthmore College who has been on tour all summer, emailed to say we might push back the Fuime Party on Aug 21st. Everyone, make sure you don't miss that night. I'll be sure to post the date and flyers will be sent out. Lots of live music and a good time for sure! Evan will be going on "significant portions" of the dnc2rnc march and I look forward to hearing all about that. Maybe we should make the Fuime gig an end of summer adventures party? If that's the case I better squeeze in a few more adventures.

Dear friend of Urban Addiction, Aussie Nicole, is leaving for Japan until the end of July. I'm so excitied for her. She was there once before as an exchange student and she is heading back now for a 2nd time. She plans on meeting up with old friends and even some fellow bloggers. I met online friends in London and it was the highlight of my trip. Of course, I reminded her to not return without lots and lots of cool pictures. As for me, looks like I'll have to settle for popping in my DVD of Lost In Translation again.

Yea Mon: Jamaica In Hindsight

Back from my vacation and the best way to describe the trip overall is tranquil and soothing. I was kissed with oodles of freckles and sipped pina coladas. Mostly, the day consisted of being situated poolside and setting up an umbrella when the sun became too much. Tough life huh? Sure beats sitting in the miserable cubical I once inhabited like a prisoner. The Jamaican people are truly charming. They have beautiful mahogany like skin that glistens and they smile so freely it’s contagious. It's a very rural place where the people live simply; I found that inspirational. There is color and music everywhere; their culture is rich with crafting. The minute we stepped off the plane we were herded onto a bus and headed for the resort. I dislike that part of traveling and we discussed the benefits of private jets and drivers, not that it was an option for any of us. Declining the opportunity to purchase the green substance that grows, became the past time the minute we hit the island. Traveling is so tiring and dull; all I could think about was a nice hot shower. Once we settled in and found our way around the Hotel, I got the first of what would be many refreshments with Jeanna and Nicole. Being hit on by Jamaican men every ten minutes did get repetitious after a while. We pondered, what are they hoping for? A quick roll in the hay, a one way ticket off the island? They didn’t seem to have an interest in leaving Jamaica, just an interest in this game they create. We laughed about it and teased one another unmercifully. We bought Jamaican trinkets to take home and took lots of photos of paradise. Thank you to Tina from Reading for the much needed ibephophen fix. Click below too see a few of my pictures. Au Revoir Chers Amis

Tomorrow morning, bright and early I leave for Jamaica. We are staying at an all inclusive resort called Wyndham Rose Hall Resort, Hotel & Country Club - Montego Bay, Jamaica. I'm packing light and it makes me feel like I'm forgetting something. I don't enjoy flying or airports, not because I'm afraid, but just because I find them terribly dull. I'll people watch on the plane, and hit the sunny beaches when we arrive! Hold down the fort Tony and Dimi.

Myself, Jeanna and Nicole are leaving for Jamaica Mon in three weeks. You know there is the reputation of American woman going there looking for *ahem* a good time shall we say. The travel agent warned us that the men could get "fresh" with us and the travel sites warn that the ganja and the smoking of said ganja is ILLEGAL! With all of these warnings in mind, Jeanna sent Nicole and I each a box of these.

Whitby – from Gregorian to grotesque

whitby.jpg

Lately I have sojourned at Whitby. Now Liz seems unaware of the town’s existence – for shame! Whitby is a fishing port located about 50 miles northeast of York, England, on the edge of the North York Moors and has two major claims to fame one holy - one horrific.

The first is somewhat obscure to any but those of a theological bent. Whitby Abbey, the ruins of which loom with a romantic menace on the cliffs above the town, was the venue for the famous ‘Synod of Whitby’ in 664 CE (sorry, perhaps I should define my use of ‘famous’ for you – I mean famous amongst that sad section of humanity who find ecclesiastical history interesting, which limits it to me and the Pope…)

So then, the synod.

abby.jpg

The upshot of the synod was the universal agreement on the date of the Easter holiday which hitherto had been celebrated at different times in different parts of the Christian world.

Now I can hear you shouting ‘Fool Tony, Fool! – The Council of Nicaea in 385 CE issued the Easter Rule which states that Easter shall be celebrated on the first Sunday that occurs after the first full moon on or after the vernal equinox’ – but that was not adopted by all until…. The Synod of Whitby! The Easter rule also explains why the date is fluid (a ‘movable feast’ because the feast day is not on a set day but dependant on the moon)

So now you know who to blame for never knowing what the freaking date of Easter is this year – the emperor Constantine who convened the Council of Nicaea.

Ok then you may not find that interesting but at least if it ever comes up on a quiz show or someone asks how come this day as that give out the chocolate eggs (you DO give chocolate eggs at Easter don’t you?...*sigh*)

whitby street.jpg

Anyhoo the OTHER claim to fame (remember I said two way back there) is Whitby is the port of entry into the fair soil of England of that sexual predator and best advert for flossing… DRACULA!

(Moveable Type does not allow for lightning strikes or ominous claps of thunder so you will have to add those yourself dear reader)

Bram Stoker spent a lot of time when writing his gothic masterpiece in Whitby and the port features prominently in the book from Dracula’s arrival on the wrecked ship ‘Demeter’ to his first attack on the fair Lucy, that flower of English womanhood vilely besmirched and brought low by the fowl European hedonist. Naturally this is pre-common market and we are all fast friends now, One Flag, One volk, One Reich!

Because of the Dracula connection and the gothic ruins of the abbey that first inspired Stoker Whitby has become a haven for Goths and wannabe vampires from all over Europe who roam the narrow streets and alleyways dressed in the de rigour black and pan cake makeup. As you can imagine Halloween is something else in Whitby.

The shops reflect the clientele with a vast amount of gothic/new age emporiums – I can heartily recommend ‘Gothic Crafts’ in Haggersgate where I bought a wall sconce in the shape of a Grim Reaper holding a candle and exposing a vast amount of skeletal body and a nice coffin shaped trinket box with a tortured skeleton trying to tear its way out. Just the thing for those pens and things cluttering up my desk…

Two other items, a lampshade made of bones and a very large Reaper holding a glowing ball, I had to give up as my partner did not agree with my sentiment that they would look fantastic in our upper landing as she said the place looks like a charnel house already…

It’s a fine place to add if you ever come to merry old and if you’re nice I will fly you up there – if you can hold on to my fur…

Bring It On ~ 2004!

Jeanna and I took several trains too finally reach our destination, NYC. New Year's Eve in the big apple, and I'm ashamed to admit, it was my first,. Not the Time Square, ball dropping type of New Years, I would never subject myself to that. I did the small gathering on a friends roof top, brand of New Years. So much changed for me in 2003 and I'm sure 2004 will do it's damnedest for change. Best to ride the wave, and not get hung up on too much. When I thought of what I was grateful for, one overwhelming thing came to mind. I never have to be at a job I hate again. My self imposed exile to the city of Chester is over. Jesus Christ, that makes me happy. I'm excited about 2004. Resolutions? I don't have any. I learned a long time ago, life has to be lived, one day at a time. Sure, I would like to be healthier, find decent employment, get George W. out of office, and I'll do the best I can each day to achieve those goals. Now, click the link and I'll show ya some pics I took with the exception of one.

Brazil or BUST

You think you know, but you have no idea.

I woke up at 3am with the rush of my head song, "Will I make it? Will I make it? Do I need to fake it?" There was no way, I could drive to West Palm Beach to meet Zavier from Bamboo Cane Company, get a check and international money order for Paulo and then go down past South Miami to Homestead, 2 hours away, to get cash from Will.

All of this considering I had no driver's license or considerable amount of cash or car. My friend Jeremy had let me stay at his apartment near Nova Southeastern University on Davie Road. I have been here for a week now and got along great with his roommate, Sean. But besides using his apartment, phone (free long distance!), laptop, and kitchen (Ramen Noodle sorcery), would borrowing his brand new $35,000 custom-made MACH 1 Red Mustang to make IT happen be abusive?

After all, this entire mess began when I borrowed my mother's AUDI and wrecked it. Not that I was wreckless or thinking I was Fast or Furious, but I did crash it and most people are unforgiving. I tell them a tree attacked me and I was an innocent, but they don't believe me. Neither does my broken ankle, which is complaining to me right now as I push it against the table, holding this R40 THINKPAD laptop against my lap..

What were we talking about? OH OK, So I steal his car and try to make IT happen. I drive down 595 at 6am with unexpected traffic, catch I-75, listen to "The Toxicity of our Cities" and pump myself up. By the time I make it down near to Will's (oh yeah, I forgot to write down his address), it is around 7am.

I hang out at a Chevron gas station waiting for a "reasonable" time to wake up my friend/boss/bambusero buddy. I meet the janitor outside and we talk about Latin American politics. A real knowledgeable guy. He thought, however, that Brazil has the largest Chinese population in Latin America. In actuality, we have the largest Japanese population by far! He thought it was Peru. Well, anyway, I know that has been keeping y'all up at night!

Finally, I call Nick at 8am. I think i wake him up but he denies it. "Oh yeah bro, I'll be there in 20 minutes". I hang out more and talk to the gas station attendant who is half-Brazilian, the janitor whose family is into aviation and we argue about whether Santos Dumont (Brazilian, lived in France) or the Wright brothers discovered aviation..

It is now 8:40am. I needed to be needing to be at VARIG at 10am with the money for my ticket. No good. I call up Nick again and he jokes "Oh bro I am on my way there, I was sleeping".

He shows up in his typical bad-ass big trucks with sod in the back. We drive over to his home where his large PACIFIC BEACH truck is waiting with his 2 Guatemalan workers. We kill sometime by looking at his custom-made choppers, black bamboo, and by talking to his workers. I just met Nick 2 weeks ago and I have a feeling we will be good friends..

"OK bro, let's go to Wills" I get in the landscaping truck with him and the Guatemalan worker. When I show up at Wills, it is 9am. I ring the door hesitantly. I had been calling him since 8am to no avail.

Will from Big Bamboo Trading Co

"Oh no, it's you!" He looks like he is hungover and just woken up. We go into his room and he puts on some clothes. We walk over to the computer room, I load this laptop, and we review his website.

"OK, Let's go to the bank". I call VARIG just incase I am late. "Oh, we are closing at NOON". Great! So much time.

We start killing time by talking about the site and the "bamboo mafia" we are banding together...

Alls I know is that at 11:30am I am speeding up US1 in the MACH1 knowing I will be late to arrive at VARIG Airlines Office on Biscayne Blvd in downtown Miami.

11:59am, I push open the door, as she is closing it.. Come on, come on let me buy my ticket. Here is $500! No, that's not enough. We need you to pay
$649.90. OK, Can i make a few calls?

Does she realize how desperate I am? That I have been homeless, hungry, and hung in the United States? That at least in Brazil, the 3rd world, I won't starve like I did in the 1st world. Does she know I am on a mission? Does it matter? Why can't she cut me some slack?

I walk out of VARIG dazed. I am wearing a nice blue dress shirt, khakis, carrying my backpack and laptop. I have $520 in my wallet and my heart aches with every step I take. Downtown Miami no longer seems interesting but a distraction. What the fuck am I gonna do now??

Back to Brazil

Luciana Souza Returns to Her Roots for New Album

June 16, 2002 -- Luciana Souza's third and latest album, Brazilian Duos, is a sort of homecoming. Even though she grew up in Brazil surrounded by the native music, she purposely avoided it on her first two outings in order to establish herself as a jazz singer. That done, she feels she can safely take on anything without fear of being typecast.

"I look Brazilian. I sound very Brazilian. And it is my roots. So it would have been an easier path to just stay there doing that," she tells Lynn Neary for Weekend Edition Sunday.

If she had started out performing Brazilian music, she says, "I would have stayed there. I could not have done anything else in my life. Once they put you in a bin in a record store, that's pretty much where you are."

This morning a sweet-sounding lady from Varig called me. She told me her name was Miriam, which is very Brazilian, yet she spoke flawless English. We didn't speak our native language but English. "OK, Edson spoke to me and he told me you want a flight from Miami to Rio de Janeiro for Dec 25th. And the return will be January 24th from Sao Paulo to New York?" Yes, Yes, I was thinking. Finally, after so much hassle, trials, and tribulations--BACK TO BRAZIL!

When she told me the ticket was $562 with taxes $639, I almost fainted. Damn! I thought I was needing to be shelling out mad duckets to make it back to the land of Soccer, Samba and Carnaval...

I excitedly called Raphael, my "bamboo brother" as he puts it, and told him the good news.

"Great!" Then he told me he would be working from the 26th to 28th at a Telefonica event in Buzios. He offered to take me along. So I am going! Buzios is sort of like the "Hamptons" of Rio de Janeiro, so we might just come across our Brazilian P.Diddys and Jay-Zs...

Serendipity, Coincidence, Absurdity: These seem like good words to describe the past 2-3 weeks. I only got this good deal because I met a pilot who flys for VARIG. His wife and he had decided to check out the International Bamboo Festival in Miami in October. I chatted up a storm with them and discovered that they lived in my house in Portofino which my parents sold in 2001. Wierd. His wife worked with bamboo in Rio and a few days told me to call her husband. That's the hook-up!

A Night & Day In NYC

I left the hell hole (AKA my job) 002_1A.jpgand decided to hop a train to the big apple for halloween.003_2A.jpg I carry my bags up Anne's death trap stair case 025_25.jpgand enter her tiny apartment, finally I've arrived. It had been a long ride this night.

First off we head to heaven on earth, for a massage.016_16.jpg

015_15.jpg Here, Anne assends the staircase, like a drunk from the bar after a late night. Later, we were at a coffee shop and Anne was fading fast from a recent illness. 018_18.jpg
It's Sunday, Anne and I have decided I'm having a bad hair day....
013_12.jpg Off to Hayato we go and Yuichi goes to work straighten the frizz and poof.011_10.jpg After six hours of straightening and me helping Yuichi with his English, we were both happy with the results. 007_6.jpg
I adore Yuichi. He is the sweetest most talented hair straightener, and he gives one hell of a back, and neck massage!

Halloween, NYC Style

The best Halloween I ever had was in NYC. Tonight, I'm jumping on Amtrak to go meet up with Anne and the trick or treaters. We might hand out candy to kids *cough-cute guys-cough* or something. I told her, I didn't care what drugs she had to cop, the rule for tonight was, you aren't allowed to get tired!! I'll run home after work and pack a bag and I'm off! I can't wait to be in the big apple tonight of all nights. I'll take pics and keep ya posted, and by the way, I'm won't be in costume. I'm just going as a woman who doesn't want to watch a lot of DVD's this weekend.

Anne Called Me.....

She was stuck in the tube in London yesterday. No AC anywhere, terrorist’s threats, bomb scares, and lovely vacation isn't it? Come home hunny, to the US of A where we have AC so cold you have to wear a sweater. Where there is yoga and steam rooms and massages. Where we have the common decency to at least announce a terror alert upgrade! Come home where there is nice cool seltzer water, with lemon, waiting for you and a cat named Alex who, told me to tell you... MEOW.
