High Pitched Sounds

Ok, so I like the following songs and I just realized they both have a high pitched vocal sound. I'm wondering what's up with that? They sound really poppy.

Jessica's First Concert

Tomorrow my 6 year old niece has a recital at Swarthmore College, but tonight I took my oldest niece to her first classical music concert. I knew she would love it and she did! We saw my favorite baroque orchestra Tempesta di Mare. This kid is a chip off the old block and I will always cherish this evening.

If The Republicans Win: Fats Waller

"I wonder what the poor people are doing... I'd love to be doing it with them!" ~ Fats Waller

We may have to go back to the rent parties people threw in 1920's Harlem. People would throw a house party with live music and the guests would chip in a dollar or so and it would go towards the persons rent that month. Jazz pianist Fats Waller was associated with these parties

Waller performing one of his most well-known pieces, Ain't Misbehavin'.

"The ebullient young man with the dazzling jazz style was a big hit at the Sherman Hotel. His nightly audience included men with wide lapels and bulging pockets. One evening Fats felt a revolver poked into his paunchy stomach. He found himself bullied into a black limousine, heard the driver ordered to East Cicero. Sweat pouring down his body, Fats foresaw a premature end to his career, but on arrival at a fancy saloon, he was merely pushed toward a piano and told to play. He played. Loudest in applause was a beefy man with an unmistakable scar: Al Capone was having a birthday, and he, Fats, was a present from "the boys".

The party lasted three days. Fats exhausted himself and his repertoire, but with every request bills were stuffed into his pockets. He and Capone consumed vast quantities of food and drink. By the time the black limousine headed back to the Sherman, Fats had acquired several thousand dollars in cash and a decided taste for vintage champagne."

*Note: Fats Waller is heavily featured in the 2008 Michel Gondry directed movie "Be Kind Rewind"

Christmas in Hollis

"It was December 24th on Hollis Ave in the dark
When I seen a man chilling with his dog in the park
I approached very slowly with my heart full of fear
Looked at his dog, oh my God, an ill reindeer"

I really am over harking back to the 80's for music, but I thought of this 1987 Christmas classic by RUN/DMC. This was a fun song and video. Remember when they would speed up the video to make people look like they were running fast? That was a cool effect from the 80's.

Now RUN is a money grubbing reverend with a corny ass reality show. DMC can barely talk and "judges" a rap show on MTV and then of course Jam Master Jay was murdered in 2002. I know things change, but this is a little much.

Billy Corgan is Looking for a Wife

How do I know this? Because I attended the Smashing Pumpkins concert last night at the Tower Theatre and Corgan proclaimed his heterosexuality and the fact that he has no children and is looking for a wife even in notoriously ugly Philly. (He didn't say that part)

The Smashing Pumpkins were great. Billy's voice is pitch perfect; what a talent. Myself and Ivan really enjoyed the two and a half hour long set that included an amazing light show. Billy took shots at the Eagles and I loved it. I can't tell you how many 30+ goofballs were at the show wearing Eagles jerseys. UGH! Can you imagine?

I love this song, so what of it?

Yea, this is one of those "feel good" songs that lifts my spirits in the car on the way too work. I know my dear Jimmi probably hates it but it makes me think of him and the conversations we've been having lately.

"This whole damn world can fall apart
You'll be ok follow your heart
You're in harms way
I'm right behind"

New Radicals

You Get What You Give Lyrics

Wake up kids
We've got the dreamers disease
Age 14 we got you down on your knees
So polite, you're busy still saying please
Fri - enemies, who when you're down ain't your friend
Every night we smash their Mercedes - Benz
First we run and then we laugh till we cry
But when the night is falling
And you cannot find the light
If you feel your dream is dying
Hold tight
You've got the music in you
Don't let go
You've got the music in you
One dance left
This world is gonna pull through
Don't give up
You've got a reason to live
Can't forget you only get what you give
Four a. m. we ran a miracle mile
Were flat broke but hey we do it in style
The bad rich
God's flying in for your trial

This whole damn world can fall apart
You'll be ok follow your heart
You're in harms way
I'm right behind
Now say youre mine

Fly high
What's real can't die
You only get what you give
Just dont be afraid to leave
Health insurance rip off lying FDA big bankers buying
Fake computer crashes dining
Cloning while they're multiplying
Fashion mag shoots
With the aid of 8 dust brothers Beck, Hanson
Courtney Love and Marilyn Manson
You're all fakes
Run to your mansions
Come around
We'll kick your ass in!
Don't let go
One dance left

{unsaid lyrics from liner}
Championed by a soulless media misleading
People unaware they're bleeding
No one with a brain is believing
It's so sad you lost the meaning
Never knew it anyway
Human natures so predictable
I'm a fool to do your dirty work whoa, whoa

ISN'T IT NICE (The Sex Dwarf Documentary)

I told you about this particular night caught on film a while back and now here is the myspace clip. All of our friends are there, Jimmi, Robert, Marilyn, Robbie, Sal and Lance.
This evening marks me officially working as The Divine Ms. Jimmi's personal assistant. I did her hair and make-up and that night... Jimmi channelled Divine.

Directed by Michael George Land, ISN'T IT NICE (The Sex Dwarf Documentary) is about a party held on South Street every third Friday of the month. It explains the draw people still have for the 80's club scene and music. Many like DJ Robert Drake, The Divine Ms. Jimmi and myself did this scene the first time around but as the film points out, Sex Dwarf is a home away from home with a group of friends we hold near and dear.

Click here to see ISN'T IT NICE (The Sex Dwarf Documentary). A monthy party you won't want to miss!

Amy Winehouse-Tears Dry On Their

I've been listening to this track a lot lately.

I don't understand,
Why do I stress a man,
When there's so many bigger things at hand,
We could've never had it all,
We had to hit a wall,
So this is an inevitable withdrawal.
Even if I stop wanting you
A perspective pushes true,
I'll be some next man's other woman soon.
I couldn't play myself again,
I should just be my own best friend,
Not fuck myself in the head with stupid men.

The Troubadour

"Since opening in 1957, the legendary Troubadour club in West Hollywood has helped launch some of contemporary music's most talented performers. Greats such as Elton John, James Taylor and Tom Waits performed there early in their careers, and it continues to be a destination for cutting-edge acts from around the world.
The Troubadour also remains a popular venue among serious music fans who enjoy listening to live music in an intimate and historically rich setting."

I'm so excited! We're going to see The Nightwatchman (Tom Morello's acuostic alter ego) perform at the legendary Troubadour in West Hollywood. How cool is that? I know I just saw him in Philly, but with CBGB closed, there are so few places with this level of history still open and he was amazing. What an event this promises to be!

Have you seen Elvis Costello in the new Lexus ad? I commented to my Mom that he never changes and she agreed. Don't You Love Mary J. Blige

I love her because she has been through it with men, had a rough childhood, survived addiction and is still singing her heart out. When she first came out she was so course. She used foul language on stage, she thought that was who she was and then she changed. She grew as a person and an artist. She found her soft, feminine side that we sometimes think we need to hide. She seems so humbled by it all and I love that about her.

Rapping Rosie

"Since the first rhymes flowed in the parks of the South Bronx, most of rap's major emcees have been African American. Then, in 1985, NYC's Beastie Boys crossed over rap's race divide to great acclaim. LATER, in 1999, Marshall "Eminem" Mathers did the same, becoming the undisputed KING of RAP. But Slim Shady is slowing down, and VH1 is majorly concerned about rap's future." ~ Egotrips (White) Rapper Show

See I wasn't the only white girl from the burbs back in the day that loved rap. Check out this spontaneous rap Rosie did with LL Cool J. You know he loved that! This is why Rosie is the star of that otherwise old lady show. She has personality PLUS! As for me well, I could spit out some RUN/DMC and Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five any day of the week, not that anyone wants to hear me rap. *Cue the music*

Have you seen The White Rapper Show yet? I think it is hysterical. These are white people (not kids either) slinging the slang, or talking "ghetto" as some people would say. When I was into this new music genre is wasn't about white kids emulating anyone. The Beastie Boys didn't do that. I think that phenomenon happened in the 90's when a lot of single mothers lived where they could afford and a kid like Eminem really grew up in a racially mixed, working class environment.

I think being a good lyricist is a combination of talent and just being yourself provided you have some charisma. The Beastie Boys and Eminen are proof of that. The authenticity comes across. Simply having a love of Hip Hop culture does not make one a rap star. KFed is the shinning example on that note! MC Serch of the group 3rd Bass was another white rapper who attained crossover success. He is hosting the White Rappers Show. I hope the contestants cover some 3rd Bass jams. Watch this 3rd Bass video and see how many people you recognize. Listen to the lyrics, brimming over with humor and an activist agenda- is it any wonder I loved this stuff?

Newsflash: Old Churches Are Cold in December

Last night for my birthday we went out for a delicious Thai dinner and into the city for a classical music concert. I was so excited all week because it's my favorite orchestra, Tempesta di Mare and I didn't get to see them perform last year. I could have seen them at Swarthmore college on December 8th in beautiful Lang Concert Hall, but no. I wanted to go into the city and see them on my birthday in the neo-gothic splendor of St. Mark's. The evenings program was music of the Paris Salon. It was created in the eighteenth-century for the élite of French society.

The ambiance of the church did not disappoint. As anyone who reads this blog knows I'm a slave for ambiance. The church's architecture was enhanced with candle lit statues, crucifixes, huge wooden doors and enormous archways everywhere. We sat in pews facing hymn books from 1982. I was enthralled as the music played in perfect acoustics.

As I gleefully listened one in a crowd of many, slowly the chill set in. My eyes darted around the church to see if they were serving hot refreshments- nothing. The harpsichord chimed and I checked to see if the other patrons were as bundled up as I was-they were indeed. The violin was wonderful but my face was freezing now and I began searching the area for a space heater or a bonfire! Iced to the bone I skimmed through my program trying too distract myself. Finally intermission came and we collectively decided not to brave this chilling castle one minute longer. I had no idea a one hundred and fifty-nine year old church would be well.....freezing. Silly me.

Sean Lennon Live Today

Twelve noon today I trekked over the World Cafe Live and took the opportunity to see one of my favorite artists, Sean Lennon. Ms. Jimmi warned me via a phone conversation that I would also be treated to obsessed Beatles fans who wanted a "lookie loo" in their patchouli scented duds at young Mr. Lennon. Damned if she wasn't right! As I stood in line I heard some guys behind me talking about checking Sean's music out for the first time the night before. That conversation continued with more chit chat about you guessed it, the Beatles. I studied my watch and cell phone praying for the line to move. The large crowd marched along quickly and I captured a spot up front left side of the stage. Sean and the band were really tight and on point.
Sean charmed the audience with his ad libbing flavored with a British wit for silliness. The play list was totally Sean's new CD Friendly Fire and after the live broadcast Sean came back out and treated the crowd to a final song. I'm sure there were JL fans there- curiosity seekers if you will, but the show was for Sean's fans and they were there to support him. Sean is returning to Philadelphia on December 15th and performing at the TLA.

Listen to what I watched and enjoyed LIVE!

Adam and the Ants on my iPOd

I've really been making a point of adding some current music to my listening repertoire and I've been doing quite well, but yesterday I slipped (back into the 80's) and added Kings of The Wild Frontier. Later I was redeemed when I learned this very tune is part of Sophia Coppola's new Maria Antoinette soundtrack. Of course I couldn't have just one Adam Ant song, I binged and added others. I saw these guys live in the 80's. The videos are great because they transport me back in time too the clubs. Check it out- Pirates (which are back is fashion) and gorgeous Adam doing that 80's dance. Love it.

The Sharif Don't Like it But He's Still Relevant

He thinks its not kosher
Fundamentally he cant take it.
You know he really hates it. ~ My favorite line from Rock the Casbah

Rock the Casbah from The Clash (1982) was inspired by the banning of rock music in Iran under Ayatollah Khomeini. The song gives a fictitious account of the ban being defied by the population who proceed to "rock the casbah", causing the King to order jet fighters to bomb any people in violation of the ban. The pilots ignore the orders, and instead play rock music on their cockpit radios. The song does not mention Iran, nor does it give the specifics of any Islamic nation, and in fact it uses Arabic terms instead of Persian, mentioning casbah, sharif, bedouin, and sheikh.

My i-Tunes Playlist

LizBWNYC03.jpg

Here are a few favorite songs that I actually listen to on my i-Pod nano.

"Buggin' Out": Tribe Called Quest blew my mind with their vocals. I listened to them over and over again in 90's.

"Giving In" :
I first saw Adema live at the X Games in Philly and they rocked so I saw them live three more times. They were my first mosh pit band!

"Rock Lobster" : The B-52's were played at every house party I went to in high school. My little nieces love this song now.

"No Sleep Till Brooklyn": The Beastie Boys are slammin' the lyrics on this track.

"The Metro": Smooth vocals and lyrics of Berlin remind me of being in Paris and lying ex-boyfriends.

"Human Behaviour" : The beat drives me nuts and so does Bjork's voice.

"Venus as a Boy": Very sexy vocals and lyrics again from Bjork. This song reminds me of sun shining on a cold Winter's day.

"She Sells Sanctuary":
I danced many a night to this Cult song long ago at a club in Philly called Revival. It was an old church and this song played there all the time.

"Ashes to Ashes": I was a senior in high school and a friend played Bowie and Blonde in her car all the time. I love the lyrics.

"Fame": This was my first 45 record and I played it over and over. I still love the blend and the beat of all the sounds, not to mention David Bowie's vocals. I would take Bowie over The Rolling Stones any day.

"People are People": I saw Depeche Mode in the 80's and this song's lyrics are as relevant as ever.

"After the Love is Gone": The vocals are gorgeous. I saw Earth, Wind and Fire in concert years ago with a boyfriend and it was all couples at the show.

"We Want Eazy" : I adore the vocals and the beats on this and I never get tired of hearing Eazy E. He gives me a jolt.

"Microphone Fiend": Eric B. & Rakim are SLAMMING the beats and rhymes. I STILL love these gods of hip/hop and listen to them often.

"Bring Me To Life": Fallen by Evanescence is a great CD. Her vocals are amazing and I'm still hooked on these songs.

"Scarface": The Geto Boys are the soundtrack to a wild stage in my life. The raps and beats are bumping and my girlfriends and I laughed hysterically to the lyrics.

"Steady Mobbin' " : Ice Cube was kickin' out the steady beats and cool lyrics that are addictive.

"Jane Says": It's one of my all time favorite songs from one of my all time favorite bands- Jane's Addiction. Perry Farrell's vocals are amazing and this song is hypnotic with steel drums.

"Smile Like You Mean It": I could cry when I hear The Killers. Their music is so touching and heartfelt.

"Crawling": Linkin Park takes me to a sad place with the vocals and music on this track.

"Kick Out The Jams": MC5 totally delivers kick ass rock & roll on this one.

"Operate": I love Peaches and on this track she tells men to hold still so she can operate. I love that!

"Runnin' " : Pharcyde does this addictive track by sampling RUN DMC and lyrics that are totally relatable for me.

"Breathe" :
The Prodigy never gets old for me. Their sound and vocals are addictive and I love the English accents.

"Can't Truss It" : I saw Public Enemy live and they really opened my mind. These beats and Flava Flav are slammin'.

"Testify": Rage Against the Machine is another all time favorite band that opened my mind. When I had a job I hated, I listened to this CD on the way to work everyday.

"Spaceship" : Sean Lennon is so ahead of his time and he is releasing a new CD in September. Into The Sun is a CD I listened too for a year straight. I love this track.

"Something Else" :
Is a really fun song and still so socially relevant. The Sex Pistols never get old or dull.

"Black Coffee in Bed" :
Squeeze did a video of this song in the 80's with a bi-racial couple in bed and I thought that was so cool.

"Last Night" : I love this song by The Strokes and Is This It is a great CD.

"MotorCrash" :
The Sugarcubes CD Life's Too Good has one great pop/alternative song after another with Bjork's vocal's.

"Say It Ain't So" : Weezer's lyrics make me cry because the song reminds me of alcoholism and it's effects.

"London Calling" : The Clash inspire me and take me to another place every time I hear this song.

Roth Radio and the Rock Star

I have been listening to David Lee Roth in place of Howard Stern for the past eight weeks or so. I like David's show- it's topical. Aside from loving him in Van Halen, he is an intelligent conversationalist doing something totally different than Stern and I really appreciate that about him.

Dave has touched on a few topics but one morning in particular he was irate. The rumor mill had suggested that Van Halen was going to be on that reality game show Rock Star. Dave was like how dare they sit on a couch like a bunch of old farts when there lead singer is alive and well and still able to hit high notes! This sparked a huge discussion on the show itself and David was able to articulate what I was feeling all along about Rock Star.

INXS did the first season of rock Star with hosts Brooke Burke and Dave Navarro. Michael Hutchence was gone and the band was looking for a hot young gyrating male lead singer to help them all earn a pay check again. David Lee's whole stance has been the best bands are made up of members who grew up together, listened to the same musical influences and rocked out since high school. He should know having grown up in Pasadena with the Van Halen Brothers.

The band sat on a couch, the most unrock star like position possible for a bunch of 40- somethings, and judged hopeful contestants. I found the show, the concept and INXS to be very white washed and generic. Right after 9/11 I saw Dave and his band Jane's Addiction in concert. It made me sad to see Navarro playing Chuck Woolery instead of a guitar.

"Did anyone really think they would pick a girl for a lead singer," David Lee asked his radio audience.?

"HELL NO Dave, they all have wives now!" I answered back too my radio.

Eventually INXS picked a guy who appeared to be about 25 years their junior and a former Elvis impersonator. They hit the road, released a video, new single and played some old material. Dave took calls from people who saw and enjoyed the show however, INXS record sales have been dismal. According to David Lee, the numbers aren't enough to cover expenses of a touring band.

David announced this morning that a new band SuperNova is the new Rock Star wannabe. This band consists of drummer Tommy Lee. I guess the college campus' were closed to him this semester? Yea, I think its sad and kinda pathetic and do does Diamond Dave but he is thankful it's not Van Halen parked on the couch. Chemistry can't be forced and to put a rock group in the context of what is esssentially a game show just rubs me the wrong way.

Hot New Music (And don't forget the DVD)Whaaaaat?

The following post up in herr courtesy of: Jordan Galland

Read on to find out how you can win a SECRET SHOW of your very own.

Dearest Dopo Yume fans, friends and family,

I dont mean to turn anyone off by opening with a reference to Hollywood blockbusters and comic books this has a point! I promise - but is anyone excited for this summers x-men three? I ask, not because the trailer looks like a unique mixture of outbreak, the godfather, clockwork orange and care bears, which it certainly does and anyone willing to fight me on that is gonna learn the hard way that I can combine all sorts of irrelevant information and still make my point, but I ask because if you are familiar with the story, you know that Jean-Grey (Famke Jensen) died in x men two and if you are familiar with the myth of the phoenix bird (or Jesus Christ for that matter) you know and expect that on the third day, or in the third episode, or the third whatever, the person who has died, or more accurately, the person who has sacrificed herself, comes back to life. Not only does she come back to life, but she comes back with infinitely greater strength and ability, hence the fiery glow of energy around the phoenix bird. In the x-men three teaser/trailer, we see Jean-Grey who was killed in the last movie, walking around blowing metal doors out of her way with a look that says, I am back and more powerful than ever. To certain extent, Gandolf undergoes the same type of transformation from The fellowship of the Ring to the Two Towers.

Where is he going with this? Well, what is happening to Dopo Yume is not dissimilar to the phenomenon I just described. Obviously, there is no third episode and no sacrifice in the Dopo Yume saga. And there may not necessarily be a resurrection in the way we think of it. Nonetheless, you can feel it rustling in the trees, and trembling beneath the ground. It is the spirit of Dopo Yume and what some people might call a second album, others might call, the tenth album (if you count super immunity for kids, tape juice, dream Barbie Q, Glow in the Dark, etc.) and others still might call it a Secret Show.

Secret because we have to decided to quietly remove ourselves from the competition and retreat to place where only the music matters, what Melville calls an insular Tahiti, and we hope you will join us there.

We are proud to announce that the new Dopo Yume record entitled The Secret Show is now available exclusively at dopoyume.com. Japa Keenon, Adam Crystal, Jordan Galland Timo Ellis and Sean Lennon teamed up once again to bring you what we feel will be hailed the best second album of in the history of second albums, and will usher in a new era for second albums and beyond. The DVD of Jordans short film which he wrote with Sean and scored with Timo, David and Adam entitled "Smile for the Camera" and which one an award for best short at the NY International Independent Film and Video Festival in November is also available for purchase on our website, at the low price of $5 dollars if you purchase it with the the secret show. In related news, Domino, the band, featuring Domino, the singer, has a new line-up with Jordan on guitar, Sam on drums and old-timer David back on bass.

The Phoenix has risen!

WIN!
The first person to grab a photo of both David AND Jordan showing legs (in drag) from the site : dopoyume.com will receive a copy of the new cd. Send the photos to photos@dopoyume.com or reply to this message.

HINT: You will not find them in drag together. Meaning, you will need 2 different photos.

May the force be with you!

Phobia

This is the third time today I tried to make this post. The last delay came in the form of a power outage so here I go again...

Last night, after a hellified week at the new gig we made our way to Fluid to burn off some stress. DJ Robert Drake and DJ Billy Muldoon and guest DJ Jason Kraley kept the party going with a fantastic mix of new wave, pop and rock. Ivan and I got there around 10:30pm and ran into a snag at the door concerning ID...I couldn't convince the doorman I was over 21! Drat! I hate when that happens. No seriously, Ivan misplaced his ID but got in anyway due to what I believe was his peace keeping skill of a non combative attitude with the rather big and burly doorman. I turned around and he was in! For more good fortune DJ Robert bestowed drinks tix on us. The vodka and cranberries called.

Everyone who is anyone was there! All the fabulous people including Robby & Sal, John and DJ Marilyn (AKA Pussy Galore) and Ricky. I even got to meet the one and only Kennie. The only person I was missing was The Divine one herself, Ms. Jimmi. After a couple of calls to her cell phone, I found out she had a family emergency and had to take a pass on the event. To bad Ms. Jimmi, you missed my little trip and fall scene in front of the bathroom. Once inside the bathroom Robby was there with a compact (lifesaver that he is!) so I could eliminate the shine. Whoa those vodkas and cranberries can really sneak up on a girl.

The day after...

After a rough night of hanging, I slept in and got up just in time to make my hair appointment. A little bit of sleep and few snips and I'm as good as new. Next adventure...this Friday is Sex Dwarf at Fluid.

Rock This Town

Well my baby and me went out late Saturday night
I had my hair piled high and my baby just looks so right
Well, pick you up at ten got to have you home by two,
Mama don't know what I've got in store for you
Well that's alright 'cause we're looking as cool as can be ~ Stray Cats

Last night I went to the Latest Dish for dinner with Marilyn. The menu was wonderful and dinner was scrumptous. We talked about relationships and the idea of being a whole person before you attempt a relationship, so many people are divorced. Why is that? Maybe they think love is being shoved up a person ****. Maybe it's because love comes with all kinds of expectations for the other person's happiness? Geez, I sure hope no one ever thinks I could handle that job. Anyway, Marilyn is happy. She is with a wonderful guy and I'm trilled someone is getting it right. That gives me hope if I ever walk down that path.

After dinner, Marilyn and DJ Robert Drake were spinning at Fluid. A club on a Tuesday night is a fun thing, believe me. God, I felt like I could cry hearing that 80's and New Wave stuff. Gary Numan, The Clash, Human League, Psychedelic Furs, Duran Duran, Bow Wow Wow, Flock Of Seagulls and ABC. I can picture those videos in my head on MTV. Britney Spears wasn't born yet! New York City and the downtown scene, my ex boyfriends...*sigh*. How I miss the 80's. Funny how I forget how hard those days were. Two part time jobs, no health insurance, Reaganomics. Sounds like these days doesn't it? HAH!

My goal in life back then, was to have my hair as high as Brian Setzers.

As I hung out in the DJ booth (definately the best seat in the house) I observed the change in fashion from the 80's. A lot women want to capture the feel of the 80's for the evening and thats so cool, but some differences that I recall are the pants for one... pants were straight leg, no flairs like today. The 80's saw a great deal more accessories...a lot more! Hats, gloves, bracelets, chains everywhere. I did see some gents that were sporting the hands covered and a hole at thumb locking the sleeve down, thats hot. NO HEELS back in the 80's. maybe a kitten heel, but lots of flat loafers happening or Doc Martins. Yea it was so fun to be there and relive those golden years. One other thing I observed is the cigarette smoke doesn't bother you when your in the DJ booth! hehe!

See the evenings playlist after the jump.

A Very Happy Birthday

glitter graphics

If you want to hear talented bands have a DJ friend point you in the right direction. Last night was so much fun at the Kyber with local celeb, Marilyn Thomas AKA DJ Pussy Galore. We met out front of the Kyber and went inside to explore the musical sounds of She Wants Revenge and The Lovemakers. Both California bands were extraordinary.

Marilyn describes She Wants Revenge as a modern day Joy Division and they were out of this world. Signed to Geffen Records their LP drops in January. The music and vocals were phenomenal and the stage performance was HOT. The Lovemakers do electronic/rock dance music with passionate, sexually overt lyrical hooks. These guys really put out, even down to lead singer, Lisa Light leaving the stage to dance with the audience. I bought their CD after the show.

Our new elegant and handsome French friend Hamid bought me a birthday martini and we all toasted. DJ Marilyn promises things are really going to be jumping off in Philly in 2006; even to the point of New Yorkers escaping to here for a welcoming creative outlet. Here’s hoping this evening was a sign of all the great things to come for all of us.

The kicker today is my job cancelled work due to the snow! The Divine Miss Jimmi tells me, "Like a liar at a witch trial, you look good for your age."

Josh, this one is for you!

Believe me, my friend Josh is not a Kelly Clarkson fan, but I love this song and our friend the lovely and talented Jeanna burned the CD for me. I blast this song in my car and it always makes me think of Josh and his current "situation." You know...the realization that you are SO much happier since that person stepped off? Here are the lyrics...

Here's the thing we started off friends
It was cool but it was all pretend
Yeah yeah
Since you've been gone

You dedicated you took the time
Wasn't long till I called you mine
Yeah Yeah
Since you've been gone

And all you'd ever hear me say
Is how I pictured me with you
That's all you'd ever hear me say

But since you've been gone
I can breathe for the first time
Im so movin on
Yeah yeah
Thanks to you
Now I get
What I want
Since you've been gone

How can I put it? you put me on
I even fell for that stupid love song
Yeah yeah
Since you've been gone

How come I never hear you say
I just wanna be with you
I guess you never felt that way

But since you've been gone
I can breathe for the first time
Im so movin on
Yeah yeah
Thanks to you
Now I get
I get what I want
Since you've been gone

You had your chance you blew it
Out of sight, out of mind
Shut your mouth I just can't take it
Again and again and again and again

Since you've been gone
I can breathe for the first time
Im so movin on
Yeah yeah
Thanks to you (thanks to you)
Now I get
I get what I want
I can breathe for the first time
Im so movin on
Yeah yeah
Thanks to you (thanks to you)
Now I get (I get)
You should know (you should know)
That I get
I get what I want
Since you've been gone
Since you've been gone
Since you've been gone

Flying High

"Once we make our decision, all things come to us."
– Deng Ming-Dao

MTV correspondent John Norris is still flying high from covering Audioslave in Cuba. I know the feeling. I was reeling (and making posts like this one) for days after hanging out with Audio’s living guitar legend, Tom Morello.

In this article John Norris asks a question that occurred to me when I first heard Audioslave was in Cuba; how does Zack de la Roche feel right now? Zack is a talented & righteous comrade, but he has to be feeling something about not being there in Havana with his former Rage band mates. He might not miss the guys per say, but visiting Cuba is an opportunity lost on him for now.

Slowly, as time passes and bands like Audioslave enter Cuba the bitterness between Castro and the U.S. can lesson. Maybe Zack will make it there one day when it’s his time. Hell, maybe I will make it there someday.

More Morello Pics and Audioslave Lifts an Embargo

"There's been an embargo against rock and roll for too long, and at least that embargo is coming to and end." — Tom Morello

Here are some other pics from the Times Up event on April 30th. Via a report from MTV News, Tom Morello and Audioslave are in Cuba! On TV, I saw Tom dancing in the street with a local and he said their concert will be free. According to Tom, the band recieved special permission to travel to Havana. How that came about, I can't imagine. Read the article by John Norris, it is excellent and of course, rock on Audioslave!

Tom Morello Meets Riot Folk

Before his gig last night at the Roseland Ballroom in NYC, Tom Morello of Audioslave stopped by Times Up on the Lower East Side to meet and jam with the Riot Folk Collective. Riot is an amazing bunch of talented kids that are making folk a threat again. Great turn out and awesome performances made the evening a huge success. Tom was able to kick out a couple of cool Union songs after which Brenna, Mark, Ryan and Evan rocked the crowd. We all had a great time and special thanks to Tom and his friends for stopping by. It was so nice to meet all of you!

Lesson Learned At Karaoke

We went out to a karaoke bar the other night. One by one artists got up to sing there song. Some people not only sing but mimic song styling of the recording artists. Whether crooning Etta James or whaling out a rock ballet I was amazed. Sitting there nursing my Yuengling I look around the room at the surprising talent.

On the way home I play Elliott Smith’s CD. I chuckle as I recall a recently aired episode of South Park. In it Timmy the kid in the wheelchair, inadvertently becomes the lead singer in a rock band and goes on tour with Oz Fest. The brilliant thing about the episode for me was how Timmy’s limited verbal skills somehow blended perfectly with the band’s music. Timmy on stage in his trusty wheelchair becomes a much coveted rock star. Timmy takes what he has and makes it work for him. Yes!

I think to myself,
“Damn Liz, break all limitations society sets as to how talent should appear. Look around you very closely. Better yet, look within yourself.”

Human Beat Box

Bjork said it earlier this year, instruments are over and she made a whole CD, Medúlla, to back it up. This morning I saw a new video by Pharrell and Snoop Dog, Drop It Like Its Hot, and the instruments were a drum beat, rthymatic raps, and tongue clicking. It was totally funky, totally head bobbing stuff. It's not the human beat box I heard from The Fat Boys in the 80's. It's far more human. The beats of today are human sounds repeating and flowing with clean and clear vocals. I like this new vibe and I'm on the look out for more.

Ryan G. A Beautiful Imperfection

Ryan G. is nothing short of amazing. You have to see this local talent if you are in the Philadelphia area and now his has a new website you can check out in between his live performances.

I've known Ryan for a awhile now and I've seen him perform a few times. His original work is nothing short of awe-inspiring. I've never seen anyone play the guitar like him and take risks with vocals the way he does. Blending so many styles and making them his own like no one else.

Beautiful Imperfections is the name of the CD and its all heart and soul. Ryan sings all the songs and plays the music. Killin’ Is Killin’, my favorite track, is a Jamaican inspired slow groove that transports one to Montego Bay. Ryan lulls us as he sings of no righteousness behind the killing in war time. Betterworld is another favorite of mine. Ryan sings a hopeful lyric and asks us to imagine what he envisions. Angel is the song Ryan opens his shows with and he hits us with unexpected vocal changes that will take you completely off guard. My Tide, the third track, has a Hawaiian flavor with a flamingo guitar riff. Riding this wave is a musical adventure. Ryan shifts from melodic vocals to a fast spoken word. Memories, the fourth track is a gentle island sound that rocks one on a hammock under a palm tree. Track eight, Freedom, contains spoken word in which Ryan conveys his disgust in the hypocrisy of a government who preaches freedom for all and still oppresses. Simpatico del Mar is a Spanish instrumental that showcases Ryan’s outstanding musical talents. Racism and a need for unity is a recurring theme for Ryan that he clearly conveys on this CD.

Mixing a blend of the Islands with Spanish flamingo, spoken word and rock sensibilities be prepared to be amazed. I am stunned at every show I attend and I love watching the the crowd stand in awe at this truly fresh new talent. Ryan gives a performance you won’t soon forget with themes that are on all of our minds as the occupation rages on in Iraq. I picture the day that I am telling people I knew Ryan G. when. A great musician and an even greater person, Ryan sings for the people, the down trodden and his own heart. He feels the cause, takes up the challenge and carries the message in every performance. We get to experience him and feel uplifted to a better place.

Rock Against Bush 2004 or Dreams Really Do Come True!

Thursday morning I made a phone call in an effort to work for UNITE union. By Thursday night I was standing about 10 feet from Tom Morello who was on stage jamming accoustically and talking about the changes that need to happen in this country.

Punk Voter brought him and others here to Philly and the whole show was really reveved up. Seeing Tom Morello upclose and jamming was a highlight for me, I'm such a major fan of his work and his principles. Each singer urged people to vote so we can unload this administration and stop this occupation. Tom talked about working for a living and having no healthcare and this being a war of poor people on both sides. Tom suggested everyone drive someone to the poles as he raised a fist in solidarity.

Carnivàle & Lesley

LesleyTony.bmp

Tony and Lesley share a joke about the American difficulty with Irony.

Strange is the world and small. I was plonked before the TV tonight watching Carnivàle from HBO, a fine show to which was well worthy of the Emmy’s it won, when what should waft across the airwaves but none other that the dulcet tones of Lesley Garrett doing her best soprano in the soundtrack.

It took me a few moments as it was unexpected but I know her voice anywhere and it was defiantly her.

I have been a fan of Lesley for many years from when she was a junior soprano at the English National Opera and now she is a big star (well, in the world of opera) she is still as grounded as she was when I first used to talk to her at the ENO and still as passionate about spreading the love of music to everybody.

She is not as well known internationally as she no doubt could be as she made the conscious decision not to do international tours while her children are still young but her voice is well known amongst those who enjoy fine music (ok…ok. I am bias……)

And now those fine people who chose the music for Carnivàle!

The good thing for me is that she does a lot of concerts in England so I can see her sing often and after concerts she always spends an hour or so talking to ‘devotees’

I did a CD for Liz once of Lesley – she said she liked it but she may have been keeping the crazy happy!

Lesley has a website if you want to see some proper photos of her!

I’m off to email her to check she got paid for her addition to the soundtrack….:)

Tom Morello Acoustic

An anti-Bush concert and I am SO there dude! I'm already conjuring up with the fantasy of taking my camera and posing with Tom while wearing an anti-Bush tee-shirt. October 7th, it's a date with Tom.

YYY's

Last night I met up with a person from my new Philly social group (MEETINPHILLY) named Evan (not Swattie Evan in the previous post). We were going to the free Y100 concert at Penns Landing featuring Yeah Yeah Yeahs. I picked up Evan and he brought our dinner along from Cosi. We made a mad dash for the water front and talked about mutual interests.

Tons of people at show but not too many that we couldn't see the bands. I think I liked the Yeah Yeahs better than Evan. I really liked them live. Karen O sounded great and guzzled H2O as she ripped out various sounds within each song. Evan hit the nail on the head by comparing them to 80's college radio sensation Siouxsie & the Banshees (best known for Peek-A-Boo). Look, truthfully, I see a glove on one hand ala Thriller and ripped clothes, I'm sold. I love the 80's stuff. I saw so many kids with buttons pinned to there checkered bags it made my heart swoon. I love seeing the look and hearing the sound, new millennium style. The first band that opened took me back to the band Berlin and their hit, The Metro. Was I in my glory or what? Post punk is alright with me. Hey, Sid Vicious is dead, Johnny Rotten is a little long in the tooth, I'll take my punk anyway I cant get it. I think we need another British invasion.

Evan is a super classy guy with glowing blue eyes and we hope to catch a movie or something else next week with the group.! Thanks Evan picking up dinner, all the great feedback on things and a generally fun e
