The Best Mexican Restaurant

The last place I went too was El Vez (Stephen Starr) and I was really disappointed. The seating was cramped and the food was nothing to rave about. Last night my Mexican dining experience was redeemed at Distrito. The atmosphere is fun and the food prepared by master chef, Jose Garces was excellent. Each dish is served A la carte but it was great trying everything.

Bottoms Up

I knew he was drinking again! Rumors have been circulating for years now. Our current president/war criminal in charge, was seen recently drinking an alcoholic cocktail in Peru. What can I say but how typical. Supposedly he stopped drinking at the tender age of 40 but as any alcoholic will tell you they only have sobriety a day at a time.

Trendy Eatery "Newsroom" is Closed

I ate at the Newsroom last summer while on vacation in LA. We really enjoyed our lunch and it was fun to see the paparazzi walk up and down Robertson, stalking the famous.

After getting slapped by the City Health Department with a "C" rating for having mold in an ice machine, gnats in bar glasses, chipping paint and a fridge that wasn't cold enough the Newsroom Cafe shut down for the day for "repairs."

Self Sabotage

The following is a list of things I'm indulging in too often....

* Beef

* Scones

* Bread

* Frozen drinks (i.e. soft serve, iced coffees)

* Blue chips

* Clotted creme and lemon curd on scones (see above)

Scones

I love scones with strawberry jam and clotted creme (when I can get it). Lately, I have been buying "just add water" scone mix at TJ Maxx and they are delicious. You can't beat them in the morning with coffee or a later snack with tea. The "just add water" variety are really good and needless to say, easy to make. Scones make the weekends seem sweeter.

Make Healthy Choices

Fruit.jpg
photo by: Andrew Hux

Eat at least five servings of vegetables and fruits each day.

* Does “five” sound like a lot? Serving sizes are actually smaller than you might think!
o One medium piece of fruit
o ¼ cup of dried fruit
o ½ cup chopped, canned or frozen fruit
o 6 oz of 100% fruit or vegetable juice
o ½ cup chopped, canned or frozen vegetables
o 1 cup of leafy greens
* Focus on fruits and veggies that have the most color. They’re generally the most nutritious.

Choose whole grains over processed (refined) grains and sugars.

* Choose whole-grain rice, bread, pasta and cereals.
* Not sure if it’s whole grain? Look for “whole wheat” or another whole grain as the first ingredient on the label.
* Limit consumption of refined carbohydrates, including pastries, sweetened cereals, soft drinks and other foods high in sugar. .

Substitute healthier fats for not-so-healthy fats

* Choose monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats such as olive oil, canola oil and peanut oil.
* Avoid trans fats, found in many margarines and baked goods.
* Limit your intake of saturated fats and cholesterol found in meats and dairy products.
o Select lean cuts of meat (look for “round” or “loin”).
o Trim excess fat from meats.
o Choose low-fat and fat-free dairy products.
o Choose poultry, fish and beans as alternatives to beef, lamb and pork.
* Add avocados and nuts to your diet. (These are high in healthy fats, but also high in calories, so don’t go overboard!)

Watch Your Portion Sizes

No doubt about it – our portion sizes are getting bigger and bigger, and unfortunately, so are our waistlines. Beware of portion distortion, and help trim down the number of calories you eat each day.

* Use these visuals to help you judge what a normal portion size is:
o ½ cup of vegetables or fruit is about the size of your fist.
o A medium apple is the size of a baseball.
o A three-ounce portion of meat, fish or poultry is about the size of deck of cards.
o A single-serving bagel is about the size of a hockey puck.
o 1 ½ ounces of cheese is the size of a pair of dice.
o One tablespoon of peanut butter is about the size of the tip of your thumb.

* Eating out? Restaurant portions are frequently two to three times larger than normal portions. Remember these tips next time you dine out:
o Split an entrée with a friend or save half of it for lunch the next day.
o Have an appetizer and salad or soup as your main course.

* At home, serve appropriate portion sizes, and store the rest for leftovers. Avoid eating directly out of a bag or carton. Think about buying foods packaged in individual serving sizes to help you control portions. Serve dinner on your smaller salad plates instead of your dinner plates!

Choose Foods That Help Maintain a Healthy Weight

In addition to watching your portion sizes, substituting lower calorie foods for higher calorie foods can help influence what your scale says.

* Substitute vegetables, fruits and other lower-calorie foods – lowfat dairy products, lean meats and cheeses, whole grains, and reduced sugar foods - for calorie-dense foods such as French fries, cheeseburgers, pizza, ice cream, doughnuts and other sweets
* Use evaporated (skim or whole) milk instead of higher-fat cream in baked goods, sauces and soups.
* Use reduced-fat or fat-free yogurt to replace all or part of the sour cream or mayonnaise in a recipe. Replace part of ricotta cheese with reduced-fat cottage cheese. Use a puree of cooked potatoes, onion, and celery as a creamy base for soups instead of cream or half-and-half.
* Sharp cheese gives extra flavor so that less can be used. This helps trim the fat.
* Select yogurt or milk products without added sugar or flavorings. Mix in fresh fruit for a flavor boost.
* Use low-fat cooking methods like roasting, baking, broiling, steaming or poaching. Limit deep-fat frying and sautéing in a lot of oil, butter or margarine. Use a cooking spray, broth or water to sauté meats.

Best & Worst

Feb. 12 (Bloomberg) -- A beagle named "Uno'' was named best in show at the Westminster Kennel Club contest in New York, the first time the breed took the top prize since the event was founded in 1877.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Men's Health has named the Aussie Cheese Fries from Outback Steakhouse (Does anyone still eat there?) as the worst food in America. The fries are made with cheese, bits of bacon and are served with a side of Ranch dressing. They check in at a whopping 2,900 calories and contain 182 g fat 240 g carbs. Yum.
Men's Health said, "Even if you split this 'starter' with three friends, you'll have downed a dinner's worth of calories before your entree arrives. Follow this up with a steak, sides, and a dessert and you could easily break the 3,500 calorie barrier." UGH! (Source)
Depression or Diet?
"For both sexes, the probability of depression peaks around age 44." ~ USA Today
Don't believe everything you read. A lot has to do with diet and exercise. It's no coincidence that many people are way over weight by 44 years of age. Some have been steadily increasing in weight since their 20's. Some have never addressed family issues, compulsive drinking or eating and now the weight is betraying them. That's what happens- diabetes, sleep apnea, high blood pressure. All of those health issues would depress me too. UGH! I think I'll go for a walk now.
My 6 year old niece Lea created this "gingerbread" house at school yesterday. It's actually made from graham crackers, miniature marshmallows, frosting and candies. Of course, Aunt Lizzy had to make a big fuss and snap a picture with my camera phone. So cute!
Give Thanks!
* Britney Spears- For being such a public disgrace and proving once again that we should never compare our insides to someone else's outsides. I was always in awe of her body. Britney had it all or so I thought. The truth is she had nothing to carry her through the tough times we all experience no matter how rich we are.
* George W. Bush- That's right I said it. Ole Simple Simon himself for proving to America that we need to question absolutely everything in government and never take anything for granted and always, always act in a spirit of compassion for others because this war has not only destroyed our once high standing in the world it has hurt US for generations to come.
* Stupid People Who Blog- You know who you are don't be shy now!! Whether it was recounting the trials and tribulations of your depressing, abysmal life or regaling us with your high-falutin times at Denny's or your brilliant Republican wannabe point of view, you have given myself and my friends plenty of laughs throughout the year. Keep up the good work.
* The Hills- One of my favorite "reality" shows, The Hills was a tour guide of LA before I got there. The show is filmed very beautifully and contains subtitles on each location and with stunning scenery of LA as it's back drop. I visited many places seen on the show like The Grove; a pretty out door shopping center and enjoyed it. While the story line has been disputed at times it actually contains a subplot reflective of my personal life.
*You!- Thank you for reading my blog this year. You guys are so sweet and I appreciate your wit and wisdom more than I can say.
*My Family and Friends-Thank you for your continued love and support. With a special word to The Divine Ms. Jimmi- Thank you for allowing me to be your personal make-up artist and reminding me where my true passion lies. I've had the most fun ever working with you!
The Power of Pizza
Another blogger was writing that he was in Vegas and so tempted to have pizza. After losing tons of weight, he was afraid of even sampling the former addictive substance. Boy can I relate. It sounds crazy to some of you I know, but for me pizza was a food I sabotaged myself with for years.
I haven't had pizza for over a year now and I've lost a bunch of weight. Pizza is nothing less than an addiction for me. I was thinking back the other day to how far I would drive for a "great" pizza. I was literally eating pizza several nights a week and wondering why I was maintaining my weight.
The other day I did something I never, ever, ever do. I bought a shirt that I knew was too small for me. I didn't even bother to try it on. I wondered if the sales girl thought I had a severe case of body dysmorphia. It was adorable and on sale. It is an XL but it's a J. Crew XL so as some of you know an XL=10-12 at J. Crew. I think I have hope that I could fit into the shirt someday and that's amazing to me. Today, I want that hope and not the pizza.
Happy 4th Peeps
Unfortunately, Takeru Kobayashi didn't win Nathan's Hot Dog contest today. He only ate 63 dogs. Joey Chestnut from San Jose won and broke the world record by downing 66. Watch the clip as Kobayashi chokes back the vomit! That guy has an amazing technique for competitive eating but I can't help but wonder if these guys aren't destroying their health. Stuffed
Last night we took the kids too see Ratatouille. OMG! It was so adorable. My niece Jessica wanted to eat at a French restaurant afterwards. We ate out before the movie and that was an eye-opener for me on a personal level.
Tomorrow, July 1st marks one year of me eating healthy. The weight loss has been phenomenal but believe me when I tell you that is the least of the rewards I have gotten health-wise. Needless to say, in an effort to eat healthy I don't eat out a lot. Let me clarify that- I actually eat out every week, but it's in the same place and I order the same thing. Last night before the movie, we were off the beaten trail.
I ordered a broiled seafood combo and specifically asked for very little butter. Well screw that, they prepared it the way they always do. The problem came after I ate most of it. Afterwards I was so stuffed it was awful! We stopped off at a park because we had time too kill before the movie and I wanted to walk. That's supposed to help, right? Wrong. It didn't help one bit. I felt so sluggish. I didn't eat an enormous amount of food. I think it was the way it was prepared that didn't agree with my lighter way.
Thus far today, I've had two slices of 7 grain bread and two eggs. That's the way I eat most of the time. Today will be fresh fruit and cottage cheese. Last night's meal left me with the worst feeling in world but I guess I can take that as progress.
Eating Healthy=Self Worth
*NOTE: I found the following blog post on myspace and really enjoyed it. It makes a lot of sense.
"You Are What You Eat . . . and then some!
I had the privilege of attending this free seminar that my sister invited me to. This was the best wake up call to have some self respect! The mission of this seminar was to educate people that are on medication who are diabetic, who have high blood pressure, who are over weight, who have high cholesterol and other health related factors caused by food choices, and that by the right food choices consumed, they can change their life and be taken off medication. A lifestyle change centered around the foods you eat and how it can have a huge impact on your LIFE! The speakers well known in their field went straight to the point, "the right foods can heal or the wrong foods can kill you!" Only the individual can control this. Educating oneself on how foods can affect the body is key. Understanding the difference between whole foods vs. processed foods and the difference of eating vegetable/fruits vs. meat. To know the cause and effect to our body by what we consume is vital to living healthy. An awakening moment was revealed when one of the speakers shared a story on why he decided he wanted to educate people on nutrition. While he was doing his residency and assisting the house doctor, he was writing the prescription that the doctor prescribed for a patient that had high blood pressure. While he was writing this, the patient asked him when would the medication cure him. At that moment when he told the patient that the prescribed medication will not cure him and he would have to be on medication for life, he realized his purpose.
With loving ourselves in a busy world of work and play, one should not compromise one's self worth by not being aware. I guess the question might be, how to get the unaware aware? The government would be a great place to start! Don't you think?
Some side effects from EATING the right foods are of course the health benefits. . . and great skin, weight control, and of course wearing all the great clothes to look and feel absolutely fantastic!!! Who doesn't want all that!? =)"
Loving Life
Lot's going on here with me but there are only a few things I feel up to posting about today. First off, I'm loving these stretch hair bands I found at Free People. My roots are showing and I'm putting off getting them done so they will be fresh before I leave for Los Angeles. Enter a cute, comfy hair band. I have the yellow, I ordered the red and turquoise to take with me when I go away.
I've made a new discovery on the path to eating healthy. It's that old staple called low fat cottage cheese (1 or 2%). Recently I had it at a diner for breakfast. Normally I don't do cheese but I tried this and it was so tasty. I guess because I've been off pizza cheese for a year now. This is positively yummy and easy to eat. It makes a delicious snack or meal any time of day, and can be used as an ingredient in many recipes.
Lastly, I want to say that I enjoyed the last episode of The Sopranos. I like the way the writer conveyed the whole looking over your shoulder for the rest of your life premise. I thought that was really amazing. I for one was a nervous wreck! The ending was a feeling not so much a blood bath. I heard years ago that series creator David Chase, would never kill off his lead character Tony Soprano so this ending made perfect sense.
Healthy Eating II
By Jonny Bowden, PhD., C.N.S.
* Egg Omlets-
No yolks in your omelettes? That's just utterly unnecessary. The yolk contains lutein and zeaxanthin, which are crucial for eye health. Egg yolks are also an important source of phosphatidylcholine, a nutrient that boosts brain health. Worried about your cholesterol levels? Consider this: Half the fat in the yolk isn't even saturated.
*Farm-Raised Salmon-
You'd think eating penned salmon would be the healthier way to go, but the farm-raised fish are pumped full of antibiotics and are lower in nutritional value than their wild relatives. In addition, wild salmon get their red color from an antioxidant in their natural food source, krill. Farmed salmon get their color from dye.
*Supermarket Cereal-
Most supermarket cereals are fiber lightweights and are also loaded with sugar. The best cereals are old-fashioned oatmeal, and a few standouts like Fiber One and All-Bran. Check the labels and choose cereals that have fewer than 5 grams of sugar and more than 5 grams of fiber per serving.
*Granola Bars-
Most granola bars are simply candy bars in disguise, with very little fiber, lots of processed carbs, and a ton of sugar. You're better off making your own healthier version from raw oats, chopped almonds, coconut flakes, raisins and a dollop of raw organic honey.
*Frozen Yogurt-
The only thing fro-yo has in common with real yogurt (the plain, non-frozen kind) is that they're both white. The frozen stuff doesn't have live cultures, which help maintain digestive health and the nonfat varieties are a mix of chemicals and artificial sweeteners. You're better off with a serving of organic ice cream.
*Apple Juice-
It's sweet, refreshing and a favorite among kids. But most apple juice is nothing more than sugar water with apple flavoring. One cup of apple juice has no fiber, 117 calories and 27 grams of sugar. And most people consume way more than a cup at a time. Stick to fiber-rich apples and skip the juice.
Drink Up
I drink a glass of Tazo Zen green tea every morning but this week Newsweek had a small piece about the new tea in town. Have you heard of this? It's called Guayaki (Gwy-uh-KEE) yerba mate (rhymes with latte) and it comes from South America. It contains a caffeine stimulant plus more antioxidants and nutritional value than green tea. You can order it here. I've already ordered mine and I can't wait to try it.
I drink green tea, coffee, seltzer and Poland Springs water. I NEVER drink juice of any kind (including orange) or soda. Those beverages are liquid candy. If I must have a soft drink I will have caffeine-free diet coke which is like a seltzer.
Speaking of sodas, Newsweek is also running an article about the addictive qualities of Diet Coke. When I was a lot heavier I drank Diet Coke. Whenever I went out I ordered a diet coke. The article refers to a study that found people who drink diet sodas are more likely to be overweight. It explains drinking diet soda cuts back on calories only initially. Over time a person will compensate for a lack of sugar in other ways. Diet guru, Richard Simmons claims 85 percent of people that come to him to lose weight drink diet soda habitually.
I should mention that I don't drink alcohol anymore and believe me I enjoy alcohol. But now that I'm over 40, beverages are an area where I can opt for a more healthy choice fairly easily. I'm hankering for a Poland Spring right now.
Rats!
"If they are not eating, then rats are usually having sex. Most likely, if you are in New York while you are reading this sentence or even in any other major city in America, then you are in proximity to two or more rats having sex." Nor is their copulation unproductive: "One rat's nest can turn into a rat colony of fifty rats in six months. One pair of rats has the potential of 15,000 descendants in a year." ~ Robert Sullivan (Author)
New York City is over run with RATS and that certainly is nothing new. It's a fact of life if you live in the Big Apple. They say if you want to see millions of rats at once, be there when a water main breaks! Some people are terrified of snakes I hate rats, any rodent really. When I was a kid I thought Willard was the most terrifing movie. Just the thoughts of being in close proximity to a rodent makes my skin crawl so it would only make sense that today I ordered the book Rats: Observations on the History and Habitat of the City's Most Unwanted Inhabitants. In spite of my disdain for anything that scurrys, I can't wait to see Pixars new movie, Ratatouille. This is one adorable rat tale.
Another A-lister, Another Eating Disorder
Oh I know she is naturally thin! While every other new mother in America struggles to lose the baby weight, these celebs just can't gain...sure. This pic is not retouched. The women looks in dire need of a hot meal. Frankly, I see a person who wants to save the world and I wonder if she can save herself.
Yesterday it was all over the news that Nicole Ritchie got a DUI. Never mind that she was high and drunk and driving down the wrong side of the street, the real highlight of the story was her 85lb weight at the time of her booking. This is an adult female. How terribly sad. Her life is unmanageable as an direct result of her eating disorder and substance abuse which enables the starving and it all goes around and around.
The social acceptance of this kind of appearance needs to stop. It has nothing to do with beauty or fitness. I'm not saying celebs should be ridiculed for their problems but they make their living off the the public. I have my own struggles with food and I won't allow the starvation look to be passed off on me as healthy or beautiful because it's no more appealing than excess weight.
Food, Food, Food.
My mother is a great baker. Everything she bakes is a huge success with everyone. I happen to know her secret but as long as she is around I leave the actual baking to her. I'm just a helper and a taste tester in the kitchen.
Yesterday she baked a wonderful bread pudding and I don't even like bread pudding but this was amazing. Cinnamon bread and pumpkin... it was too die for. Right away we start thinking about who we can give it away too. Anyone that walked in the door at the moment was leaving with a container of delicious bread pudding, trust me. We sat there and made a mental list of the people we knew would enjoy it.
Finally I realized something. If the big container of bread pudding stays in the house my mind says I need to eat it three times a day until it's gone or I can't eat it at all. It's just the way I'm wired when it comes to things like this- FOOD. It's all or nothing for me, do or die binge or with hold. Giving it away seems like the safest way and then I frantically want to give it away. Isn't that crazy?
I learned a long time ago that a holiday is just one day and one meal to get through. I honestly treat every holiday like any other day and I promise you holidays don't bother me in the least. As far as eating goes, if I take it one meal at a time I see no reason to gain a ton of weight around the holidays.
Today I am grateful for many things. I have a truly blessed life and I'm always the first one to admit that. I'm off from work and I plan on sticking around the house today because the weather is horrid. Tomorrow, I may venture out (Black Friday) and check out the sales revelling in the fact that I can sleep in on Saturday. Life ends up being about the simple pleasures doesn't it?
Health and Happiness to you all on Thanksgiving 2006,
~Liz XOXO
Marmite on Toast
I was reading about this spread today and apparently it's one of those vegetarian healthy foods either you love or hate. I think I will dislike it, but I want to give it a whirl. Anything on toast is always a plus with me. I consider seven grain toast a treat. My only hope of trying it right now is whether or not Wegman's carries it because it comes from Ireland. I will have to check their foreign food section, it's wonderful. In the meantime, let's read more about Marmite.
Update: I was able to locate a small jar of Marmite at Wegman's. I have to admit the smell was awful and I fully expected to hate it. My Mom tasted it and spit it out! I bravely took a bite and LIKED IT. I didn't love it more than Strawberry jam, but I enjoyed the salty flavor. Surprise.
More On Nutrition and Exercise
People put a lot of pressure on themselves to work out, especially when they are very over weight and in no kind of shape. Lately, I've come across some interesting information via a trainer and a weight lose consultant and they say 80% of weight lose is eating properly. Before you guilt yourself over the exercise or lack thereof, try getting a food plan in place. It might be less overwhelming and when the pounds start coming off an exercise program will be more realistic. If you are more advanced and ready to step it up, check out reality star and model Adrianne Curry's suggestions on fitness and food. She has a lot of good common sense things to say and the body to boot.
Healthy Eating
I'm making a list of all the benefits I have received since I started eating healthy in July. I'm shocked when I think of how much weight I have lost since July but I'm completely serious in saying that really has not been the greatest benefit. I know that sounds so phony but when I think about the ways my daily life has become easier and richer it's the truth. Just read my list and you will see what I mean. The benefits are as follows...
* I sleep better.
* I don't have various food cravings anymore.
* I haven't eaten pizza (a former addiction) in 3 months and I DON'T MISS IT.
* Just for today: I never want to eat unhealthy again.
* I see the damage loads of bread and pasta do to my mind and body.
* I feel full most of the time and hungry only at meal time.
* I have so much more energy and I can go longer in my day. This has allowed me to accept new challenges.
* I only eat out twice a week and they are planned meals. Planning has been key because I don't think about what to eat the rest of the time.
Mooching Through Life
Eating healthy this summer has been a real eye opener. Getting rid of the refined sugar and mostly eating steak, fish and veggies, I've stepped up my game. I didn't expect to feel this way. Weight lose is just a nice by product. The real gift has been the clarity.
You are what you eat. I'm not junk so I don't eat junk. Dr. Blaine taught me that. Over eating isn't about giving yourself more, it's about giving yourself less. What didn't I do because I was using the money for pit stops on the road called life?
This Won't Make Sense to You
"Most of us were told as children not to say can't and to never say never. We rephrase our negative thoughts and statements in the positive and in the present, as if the positive already exists. Our outlook and, amazingly, our circumstances brighten considerably. Ideas about how to move forward pop into our head, replacing excuses with a powerful energy -- an energy that moves us toward accomplishing our goals. "
This has been a really good day thus far. Starting a new goal always feels good now I have to work on phase two- motivation. Hooray for me job well done!
The Gourmet Post
There are many variations on a cucumber sandwich recipe, but I prefer to make them quick and simple. They are so refreshing and delicious in the summer time, always simple and elegant. Even British anarchists use cucumber sandwiches to get their point across at Parliament. Good show chaps!
FANCY CUCUMBER SANDWICHES
1 medium size cucumber
1 tub whipped cream cheese spread
shaker of dill weed
1 pkg white or wheat cocktail bread
Wash cucumbers well. Using a fork, scrape down the cucumbers lengthwise. Slice the cucumbers into 1/4 inch slices or thinner. Set aside.
Using a butter knife, spread the cream cheese onto the individual slices of small cocktail bread (cocktail bread might be found in your deli section rather than the bread aisle, it's just a small and dense miniature version of bread).
Don't cake the slices with the mixture, just a thin layer concentrated in the middle of the slice.
Next, lay one slices of cucumber in the middle of the bread. Once done, shake a small amount of the dill weed onto the cucumber slice. Remember that dill is strong and a little goes a long way. Just one or two taps of your finger on the shaker should do it per slice.
Cut the crust off bread slice in triangles. You get raves about this at parties and requests for it at potlucks.
Just remember to cover them tightly because the bread will dry and the cucumbers will get wilted if left out too long. It's a good idea to do some preparation work the night before, but leave the slicing of the cucumbers and the assembly of the sandwiches for the last minute.
Good Stuff
Last night I went out to La Collina with my financial planner and accountant, plus some others. The salmon was very good and the company delightful.
I love Philly and it's Main Line area. I've been hanging out there for years now. No matter where I go Philly will always be home base for me, everything is here in one big eclectic mix just the way I like it.
My cousin's husband, Peter Reinhart will be in Philly soon doing the Book and the Cook. I hope to cover the event in some form or another. Peter will be the featured author Lacroix at Rittenhouse. Tres chic!
Go Eagles! As you can imagine the tee shirts and banners are everywhere. Lots of folks clamoring to attend the actual superbowl and the rest are planning parties. A superbowl party might actually be fun this year.
PLUM!
christmas-pudding.jpg
By:Tony
Tis’ the night before the night before Christmas and outside the house children from the local poorhouse dressed in tattered rags struggle against the driving snow to hack out a tuneless version of ‘God rest ye merry Gentlemen’, whilst fighting against their combined consumptive cough.
Inside I toss another log into the inglenook and settle down into a high back chair close to the now roaring fire. In one hand I have a brimming tankard of fine porter to toast the season and in the other a small bell to summon the staff.
As I ring for Mellors to hasten the departure of the caterwauling commoners with a bucket of cold water and to toast me some muffins, it being four of the clock and therefore time for tea, I feel inclined to shed some light onto one of the more English of Christmas traditions in hopes of lifting the fog of misunderstanding in the minds of our colonial cousins.
Plum Pudding
Fist thing – there are NO Plums in Plum Pudding. This is no attempt at recipe misdirection but a throwback to the year 16whatever when the ex-popular Plum so often used in medieval pastries started to be replaced by the fashionable dried grapes – raisins or currents as we call them now. Modern consumer law being what it is the name Plum has now been replaced and the pudding renamed after the time of year when tradition insists the dish is consumed – Christmas. It is now referred to as Christmas pudding. And it is rich. Very rich.
A typical recipe consists of flour, suet, mixed dried fruit, candied orange and lemon peel, eggs, treacle, mixed spice, cinnamon, nutmeg, carrots, sugar (brown) …and a pinch of salt
FYI Suet is raw beef (or mutton) fat, especially the fat found around the loins and kidneys and you use a LOT….
At to finish the mix (and you as well) you can marinade the pud in spirit. Brandy is the tradition as is the serving of the dish ablaze before being doused in brandy butter…supersize THAT one!
And that’s the problem. When I was young and a little tiny boy I could eat the stuff till not only the cows come home but till they come home, get on the sofa, pick up the remote and start to watch their favourite soaps. Now however less is definitely more and a little goes a very long way as much as I still enjoy it. The thing is it is a Christmas icon, instantly recognised as it is boiled in a tied cloth forming a large ball and served either in the ball or cut in half with a sprig of Holly on top slowly roasting in the Brandy flames. Shop bought puds are usually bowl shaped. It is a Christmas as...... well... Holly...
The suet is the binding agent keeping it all together but restaurants now tend to cut this ingredient down. I was served it a few days ago at a Christmas meal and it arrived as a small slab like a slice of cake but, although it fell apart at the touch of the fork, it tasted gorgeous! I know what Proust meant when he had Swann remembering his past triggered by a teacake as the taste of Christmas pudding evokes in me Christmases of yore with family and friends and lit with the warm glow of happy memories.
A highlight of the family Christmas was the pudding – even if it was never eaten (except by me!) it had to be there as the precursor to the revels of the afternoon and the Christmas night buffet where it would still be for those hardy souls who likes theirs cold…
There was also the cash incentive.
When preparing it is traditional to put some silver coins in the mix and have the family stir the pud and make a wish. If you are lucky you got a slice with a coin in it (perhaps this explained my desire for second helpings!) and did not crack a tooth. This practice has died out since the withdrawal from circulation of the last silver based coin, the sixpence, some years ago. This being said my mum used to keep a horde of coins especially for the pudding even though you could not spend them.
Christmas is not Christmas without Christmas pudding. I urge you to go down to one of those ex-pat shops or specialist importers and try real English Christmas pudding – imagine a fruit cake on steroids – the true gift of the Magi.
Dining Out With Me
misssnickety.jpg
He calls me "Miss Snikety" in this pic
Now that I'm a published writer, maybe I am getting a little eccentric, but when dining out recently with dear Evan, he was appalled and flabbergasted when I pulled out a magnifying glass to see the menu.
Please let me explain, you see this is our favorite place to eat and I know the words are tiny on the menu and I can't bear the thoughts of another pair of glasses hence the looking glass. Ok, ok, maybe I've watched too many Agatha Christie murder mysteries on A&E.
Click over to Evan and tell him to stop picking on me. ;)
Birthday Celebration
Last night we had a lovely dinner/party to celebrate my birthday which is actually on the 9th. Thank you, thank you to everyone who was able to attend, we had a great time. The Restaurant School in Philly was the location, lovely dinner atmosphere and desserts.
The celebration was heightened given that earlier I got word I will be writing a sensational blurb for BITCH. I'll post the issue when it's in print (and probably hand them out on street corners).
This was just the beginning, more fun lies ahead. I have already reeled in some cool gifts. What a lucky girl I am in so, so many ways.
Not A Pretty Post
I have been sick with a hacking cough for weeks now. When it finally seemed to move on, the sore throat appeared accompanied by a runny nose. I think its from taking care of my nieces so much. You see, My sister in law had the baby and has been hospitalized for a while. Mom and baby are fine but I have been helping out. I pulled a muscle above my rib cage coughing and am still feeling that ache. Today I picked up some stuff at the health food store. I really didnt want to go the anti-botic route.
PMS blues
This month's PMS has been especially annoying. The two biggest highlights include a craving for chocolate, and tearfulness. This morning I found myself channel surfing and landing on MTV's Ashlee Simpson show. When nubile little Ashlee discusses living in sister Jessica's near perfect shadow, I was balling my eyes out. UGH! This spoiled rotten kid Ashlee is annoying, why am I blubbering? It's not just moist eyes, its is the sniffing and sobbing brand of crying! It's not rational, it's simply PMS. Chocolate desserts aren't safe around me and either is the box of klennex.
Nobody knows the trouble I seen
kl_Bols_advocaat.jpg
You would not believe the trouble I had tying to score some primo Advocaat this yuletide!
Advocaat is a Dutch liqueur, a rich and creamy blend of unpasteurised egg yolks, sugar, aromatic spirits, and grape brandy with a hint of vanilla. It has a distinctive smooth yellow consistency with strength akin to fortified wine. It’s the eggs you see…
Advocaat is one of the staples of a family Christmas in my tribe and I cannot remember a Christmas without it. The best Advocaat you have to eat with a spoon as it’s so thick but almost impossible to get outside of a Dutch market. The bottled variety is of a thinner consistency and is the basis of the age-old favourite family drink – the Snowball. The Snowball is Advocaat, limejuice and lemonade with a Cherry on a stick and can be made up strong or weak depending on who gets it!
Well nearly no one got it this year. Now I understand the dangers of Salmonella and did read somewhere that every egg in the western world is hatched with it but that is no reason for me to be vilified for asking for a bottle of Advocaat! Fear of infection has kept it off the shelves in these over protected times.
From the looks I got you would think I was spoon-feeding pure heroin to newborn babes or selling aids infected needles to teenagers as ear piercing kits. A chorus of disapproval and shock greeted me wherever I went. I think it would be easier to buy a human kidney that Advocaat this year. ‘No call for it’ say some’ Dangerous!!’ say others ‘ Fuck off or I’ll call a cop’ (Ok – that last one was a bit of an exaggeration) I have expected the shifty looking individual who shambled up to me when I was coming out of the scene of my latest rejection to whisper to me ‘You want good stuff? Me know when to get plenty goood Advocaat, very yellow, very cheap we make deal yes?’ only he was trying to sell me pirate cigarettes. Cancer, it seems, is more acceptable than the horrors of a very faint possibility of a jippy tum for a couple of days. (US translation; jippy tum = upset stomach)
I did track down a bottle, thick with the dust of ages, at the back of a very high shelf in a backstreet convenience shop but to be on the safe side I also bought a porn mag to wrap it in - just in case I met anyone I know taking it home.
Snowball anyone?
Baking Cookies
Normally, on a Sunday, I spend part of the day IMing Dimi. We get caught up on the mutual projects we share, namely this blog, as well as personal updates. Today was a bit different. I spent two hours baking chocolate chip cookies and pizzelles. Mom mixed the batter and I loaded the pizzelle iron, one after another. Dimi and I caught up to one another. I talked to Anne and Joao and Jeanna via telephone. I watched Saddam being shown for the rat bastard, he is. Satisfaction came when the cookie mission was accomplished.
Poor all ingredients into a shaker. Shake well and strain into a Martini glass.
If you want to make it look really nice, you can garnish it with a thin slice of green apple. Enjoy!!!
High Tea Anyone? An Alternative For a Caffeine Addict
I am a true coffee addict. It started out as a morning ritual and evolved into an afternoon and after dinner event. Starbuck's made it easier appearing on each corner
in just about every city I would visit. It fit in with my life's hectic pace, besides I was thrilled with the variations of coffee delights. No longer was it just coffee, cream and sugar, now I could choose between Mocha's, Mocchiatos and other various technical names for cappucinos.
So who would ever think I would switch to be an afternoon tea drinker. Tea has caffeine, but not as much as coffee. It was this caffeine in my afternoon coffee break that would get me through the day.
I think it was on my first visit to London when I experienced my first "High Tea." At first, I just thought I was acquiescing to the fact that the Brits drink tea in the afternoon. Then I discovered that just like coffee there are a variety of teas all with a unique taste and interesting names; Earl and Lady Grey, Jasmine, English and Irish Breakfast Tea are just a few. These teas were served with scrumptious scones, clotted creme and berries; sometimes there would be dainty little sandwiches and shortbread biscuits. So what happened to my afternoon coffee fix? After a couple of weeks I liked the fact that tea was not giving me the same jolt as coffee, I actually started to like that my afternoon breaks gave me time during the day to slow down.
Rice To Riches
The lastest in pretention is here! A $5.00 bowl of rice pudding. Anne took me to this place last weekend. She wanted me to see it. Now, I'm not a big rice pudding fan as it is, but she swore they had great flavors. I thought it looked rather gross through the window. I mean some of it was green and yellow and brown and it was all lumpy. You know, like rice pudding.
I tasted it and decided, if I were going to eat a dessert, I would rather it be ice cream. The atmosphere is a high tech Japanese flavor, which normally, I would be into that, but this was just a lot of hype for of all things..rice pudding? Now I have to admit, the place was packed. It was Saturday night and folks were in line and eating at the Jetson like tables (you have to stand at them which turns me off right away). The thing that did* impress me was the cool little bowls they serve the pudding in. They come with a weird spoon and napkin in plastic and a lid. It was very high tech -man on the moon, Tang, kinda stuff. That was cool! Anne bought into it, as apparently many people do, but I couldn't. Yea, there making money, but I'm just a Baskin and Robbins girl at heart.
