Night Out

LizJimmiPhotoBooth.jpg
The photo booth at The Barbary. That's a fun place. Jimmi performed there on New Year's Eve. The owner was pleasantly surprised to see us last night.

After The Barbary, we went to Silk City for a bite and more dancing at the adjoining club. No breakfast foods but the late night fare was excellent and reasonably priced. We gave it the "gay face" and snapped these pics with my cell phone.

Deal Breakers

I watched the clip and I love, love, love the topic. It doesn't get explored nearly enough. All three of the ladies, especially Susan Silver were wonderful and made excellent points.

In recent years I've had to let go of a few long time girlfriends because being around them was hurting me. Either they were absorbed in an addictive relationship, work-aholics, or had become extremely self-centered without even knowing it. Life is too short for me to be unhappy in an unfulfilling relationship of any kind.

Some people have felt hurt by my choices but I feel no guilt. In every case I tried to work things out but people don't change and the older I get the more I resent anyone stealing my joy. I move on and I basically don't look back because I'm looking ahead for what's next on the horizon.

“None Of Your Business”

While campaigning for her mother Tuesday at Butler University in Indianapolis Chelsea Clinton told a college student his question regarding her mother and Monica Lewinsky was "And I do not think that is any of your business." I say good for Chelsea. This gentleman Mr. Evan Strange (Yes, that is his real name) asked a question and he got an answer. (Source)

Didn't Mr. Strange (I can't resist calling him by his name) consider a better way to ask his question; a more tactful, classy way? Mr. strange could have asked, "Does the trials and tribulations of your mother's private life make her more equipped to lead a nation?" See what I mean, a kinder version?

I know for me I give ex boyfriends nicknames such as "The Prisoner, or Ole Crazy but Cute or That Lazy Bum" because the sound of their real name makes me shudder. Just imagine mentioning by name Mark David Chapman to Yoko Ono. That would take guts out of this world. I thought it was beyond rude to put Chelsea on the spot the way Mr. Strange did and not because she is fragile but because the people he is referring to are her mother and father whom clearly she loves. Since he felt the need to ask such a classless question I applaud Chelsea's direct answer which was followed by a round of applause from the crowd.

If Mr. Strange was one of my ex boyfriends I guarantee I'd still refer to him by his real name.

It Feels like Monday

LizAtRest.jpg
Me last night

Yea right, happy Tuesday. I've just had two weeks off so I'm a little tired on what feels like a Monday morning to me. All is well so far, but you know how life is that could change any at any minute. Not that I'm waiting for the other shoe to drop or anything. My job actually did what they were supposed to do while I was away and I'm really impressed (Not that they care).

What else is new? Well some 26year old guy wanted to get together with me over vacation but I took a pass. That's right don't hate, I said 26 but guess what? Been there done that and I'm over it. I'm not claiming to be deliberately celibate like Lenny Kravitz because I would never say never but I totally get where Lenny is coming from. You get to a certain age and if it's not a person you want to commit to then it's not worth the time or effort. I feel like my time is very precious and I'd rather hang out with people I feel spiritually connected too even if that means passing up a hot younger man. I'm learning the value of letting things happen organically.

4,000 Americans Killed In Iraq

"Picture of me and some Iraqi kids home alone in Ta'meem Ramadi in 2006.
They had a wall rug with a picture of the signing of the United States
Declaration of Independence in their living room.
I asked them if their parents told them what it meant and they did not have a clue.
Their parents purchased the rug in a market. I also have a second picture of the entire wall rug.

We had to leave before I could explain what the picture meant." (Source)

I look at this picture and wonder what these poor Iraqi families must go through on a daily basis with armed soldiers everywhere not to mention what these soldiers are seeing and dealing with daily. I was profoundly against this occupation from day one and I remain that way. My number one reason for wanting to vote for Obama is the fact that he voted against this war. In turn that is my number one hesitation on giving Hillary my support coupled with my disdain for Bill Clinton's passive/aggressive remarks such as there being two patriots running for office refering to his wife and McCain.

Some of you may have noticed my inner struggle as to who I should vote for but with each passing day my conscience gets louder and louder. I have to vote for the real anti-war candidate, Senator Obama.

With the exception of Janet, La Toya and Rebbie the original Jackson 5 and parents have come upon hard times according to the New York Post. Imagine that downhill rags to riches to rags again ride. It's really sad and yet another testimony to the destructive lives of child stars.

Make Healthy Choices

Fruit.jpg

Eat at least five servings of vegetables and fruits each day.

* Does “five” sound like a lot? Serving sizes are actually smaller than you might think!
o One medium piece of fruit
o ¼ cup of dried fruit
o ½ cup chopped, canned or frozen fruit
o 6 oz of 100% fruit or vegetable juice
o ½ cup chopped, canned or frozen vegetables
o 1 cup of leafy greens
* Focus on fruits and veggies that have the most color. They’re generally the most nutritious.

Choose whole grains over processed (refined) grains and sugars.

* Choose whole-grain rice, bread, pasta and cereals.
* Not sure if it’s whole grain? Look for “whole wheat” or another whole grain as the first ingredient on the label.
* Limit consumption of refined carbohydrates, including pastries, sweetened cereals, soft drinks and other foods high in sugar. .

Substitute healthier fats for not-so-healthy fats

* Choose monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats such as olive oil, canola oil and peanut oil.
* Avoid trans fats, found in many margarines and baked goods.
* Limit your intake of saturated fats and cholesterol found in meats and dairy products.
o Select lean cuts of meat (look for “round” or “loin”).
o Trim excess fat from meats.
o Choose low-fat and fat-free dairy products.
o Choose poultry, fish and beans as alternatives to beef, lamb and pork.
* Add avocados and nuts to your diet. (These are high in healthy fats, but also high in calories, so don’t go overboard!)

Watch Your Portion Sizes

No doubt about it – our portion sizes are getting bigger and bigger, and unfortunately, so are our waistlines. Beware of portion distortion, and help trim down the number of calories you eat each day.

* Use these visuals to help you judge what a normal portion size is:
o ½ cup of vegetables or fruit is about the size of your fist.
o A medium apple is the size of a baseball.
o A three-ounce portion of meat, fish or poultry is about the size of deck of cards.
o A single-serving bagel is about the size of a hockey puck.
o 1 ½ ounces of cheese is the size of a pair of dice.
o One tablespoon of peanut butter is about the size of the tip of your thumb.

* Eating out? Restaurant portions are frequently two to three times larger than normal portions. Remember these tips next time you dine out:
o Split an entrée with a friend or save half of it for lunch the next day.
o Have an appetizer and salad or soup as your main course.

* At home, serve appropriate portion sizes, and store the rest for leftovers. Avoid eating directly out of a bag or carton. Think about buying foods packaged in individual serving sizes to help you control portions. Serve dinner on your smaller salad plates instead of your dinner plates!

Choose Foods That Help Maintain a Healthy Weight

In addition to watching your portion sizes, substituting lower calorie foods for higher calorie foods can help influence what your scale says.

* Substitute vegetables, fruits and other lower-calorie foods – lowfat dairy products, lean meats and cheeses, whole grains, and reduced sugar foods - for calorie-dense foods such as French fries, cheeseburgers, pizza, ice cream, doughnuts and other sweets
* Use evaporated (skim or whole) milk instead of higher-fat cream in baked goods, sauces and soups.
* Use reduced-fat or fat-free yogurt to replace all or part of the sour cream or mayonnaise in a recipe. Replace part of ricotta cheese with reduced-fat cottage cheese. Use a puree of cooked potatoes, onion, and celery as a creamy base for soups instead of cream or half-and-half.
* Sharp cheese gives extra flavor so that less can be used. This helps trim the fat.
* Select yogurt or milk products without added sugar or flavorings. Mix in fresh fruit for a flavor boost.
* Use low-fat cooking methods like roasting, baking, broiling, steaming or poaching. Limit deep-fat frying and sautéing in a lot of oil, butter or margarine. Use a cooking spray, broth or water to sauté meats.

Frida Kahlo in Philly

Yesterday I took my oldest niece, Jesse to the Frida Kahlo (July 6, 1907 – July 13, 1954) exhibit at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. The other two nieces (ages 6 & 3) wanted to stay home with Grandmom and bake cookies. Besides my Mother, my niece is the perfect person to take to a museum. At only 8 years old, she really appreciates art and is quite the artist herself. With the benefit of audio, the exhibit comes alive and we left the museum with a better understanding of Realism, Symbolism, and Surrealism. I love the Salma Hayek movie Frida and the exhibit was loaded with actual photographs of Frida and her family as depicted in the film. After seeing this film I began researching Frida and really became a fan of her work, her politics and the struggle that was her life and marriage so it was a huge treat for me to see these works up close.

More Change: Larry Lessing

"If you violate the pledge, you've created a huge opportunity for people to attack you," ~ Larry Lessing of Change-Congress.com

Larry Lessing

If the Bush admin has shown us anything (and not much positive) it has shown the change on the horizon. The senator from Chicago is basing his run for the White House on this very premise; change in the form of bi-partisan accountability. A Stanford law professor, Larry Lessing is initiating a brilliant plan that allows people to track congressmen wiki-style from home, in their pajamas if they so desire.

The professor wants legislators to promise to do four things which he says will reduce the influence of money on policy making:

1.) To promise not to accept money from lobbyists and political action committees; support public financing of elections.

2.) Support public financing of elections.

3.) Commit to passing legislation to permanently ban the funneling of money to their districts' projects of questionable worth.

4.) To commit to "compel transparency in the functioning of congress.

Was it Worth It?

Impeach.jpg

Five years ago some of us marched and never wanted this war to begin. My number one reason for being an Obama supporter now is the fact that he voted against this war. He did what I thought every Democrat should have done at the time and I was grievously disappointed (Hillary) in those who did not. Police arrested more than 40 protesters in San Fransisco today. Five years, 1825 days, 3 die every 24 hours... was it worth it?

Monaco

The Prince is marrying and no it isn't to me. I loved Monaco with a passion when I was there and would easily agree to live out my days seaside, alas I wasn't asked and yes I'm frankly... a little bitter.

According to the French media claims that modelizer and father of two illegitimate kiddies, Prince Albert of Monaco, will marry his girlfriend, former South African Olympic swimmer Charlene Wittstock, in September.

The prince is 50 years old and is now just settling down!

He also probs wants a legit heir to the throne.

His two kids out of wedlock can't step up because super Catholic Monaco is ruled by strict succession rules. No bastards on their throne!

The last time Monaco celebrated a wedding of its ruling prince was in 1956, when his father Rainier married Oscar-winning American actress Grace Kelly. (source)

The Monaco I saw- breathtaking.

Look What's in Charge

This low-life Spitzer is running the show? He served as New York State Attorney General before becoming Governor of New York in 2007. Spitzer busted people for a living, think about that. Senator Larry Craig is still in office. Consider that one for a reality check. Look what this man has done to his wife and family? His wife looks destroyed. This is what happens when you allow toxic people into your life. Labels and trappings mean NOTHING. This man shared his money with a hooker. Money that belonged to his children and wife. He put them on par with a hooker in an effort to chase his own desires.

I hope they dig up the hooker and she gets to tell her side. Undoubtedly, a pretty but limited girl, I bet she has a tale to tell about this creep. Once again, a wealthy ne'er-do-well taking advantage of a call girl's services; something HE and his kind made criminal behavior. To quote the hooker, "Dude do you want the sex?" Oh he sure did and now he's going to fry for it.

Just out on DVD: Into the Wild. I watched it last night and it is AMAZING. Whatever you do add this one to your Netflix's queue. I loved it. This film is so touching and heartbreaking. I Love Twitter

I adore Twitter beyond belief. I didn't think I would but it's so addictive because it's so fast and easy and that makes for frequent and different updates all the time. I have one friend on Twitter who updates like five times a day! Before you think, "what a loser, get a life" the man is a world renowned entrepreneur who travels everyday and stays connected through Twitter. That's how effective Twitter is. Even if you don't have a blog consider making a Twitter page and get connected to me, news outlets, your favorite candidate, even blogs. It's so fun I promise.

This video explains the Twitter concept:

Natalie on Hillary & Sexism

"Which movie would you rent? “Big Momma’s House” or “Medea’s Family Reunion”? Be careful, they are both about strong women who are actually black men." ~ Stephen Colbert interviewing Robert Reich, former Clinton Labor Secretary.

Ms. Natalie Portman is getting the same impression I am regarding Hillary Clinton's campaign. She wins a few states in comparison to Obama's ten in a row but she's fighting dirty? I was stunned to read several blog comments not to mention cable news outlets that amount to nothing more then a, "That Bitch? No way!" sentiment when commenting on voting for Senator Clinton. It really has made me think Hillary and woman everywhere with any ambition need my support. The woman has spent her entire career in politics. When men do that they are dedicated, when a woman does it she's conniving or fulfilling some sinister plot. I am now seriously reconsidering my original Obama vote. I'll let you know which way I go.

Natalie Portman says: "A lot of the stuff people say about her, I hear it and my stomach falls because it's so sexist. You ask people why they don't like her and it's because her husband cheated on her! That was obviously not her choice. She's so much more polished and experienced than anyone else. Last night, a friend, a social worker in L.A. who works with underprivileged kids, was saying how these girls who have never been interested in politics before are so excited that a woman might be president. I mean, look how many women are in government…Hillary's one of, what, [a handful of] female senators?"

FRAUD!

"There's no credible evidence that what's in Airborne can prevent colds or protect you from a germy environment," David Schardt, a nutritionist at the Center for Science in the Public Interest, said in a written statement this week. "Airborne is basically an overpriced, run-of-the-mill vitamin pill that's been cleverly, but deceptively, marketed." Click here to get your refund!

Airborne is nothing more than an overpriced vitamin and it doesn't prevent anything. The company has just settled a class action lawsuit for $23 million. This is what happens when people don't have health care and start "doctoring" themselves from home. I had an Aunt who died at 62 years of age because she never went to the Drs. (Due to fear) and simply used her trusty medical encyclopedia for self diagnosis. She never saw the pancreatic cancer coming.

I use to work for a physician who was furious at the thoughts of herbal medicines. Of course he was against universal health care and couldn't see how a lack of health insurance benefits places like GNC. By the way, we the employees of this practice had HMO while the Dr. and the office admin were on Blue Cross/Blue Shield. I often wondered why they didn't carry the same insurance as their employees, many of whom were working mothers.

Hillary All the Way

I don't get it when people state (On otherwise Liberal blogs) they simply won't vote for Hillary. What if she gets the nomination? I am really and truly disheartened by that attitude. Would those peeps vote for a continuance of the Bush polices via 71 year old McCain? Let's not even mention the pro-Christian, anti-abortion, anti-education, anti-healthcare, anti-working class, anti-gay agenda of the Republican party. I can't help but feel it's woman in the white house phobia. Maybe on second thought I will give her my vote here in Pa.

I'm getting the impression some people feel threatened.

In America?

Last night on 60 Minutes I watched this segment on Remote Area Medical and it is stunning. Can't someone send this clip to the White House? How can people not care about politics or the upcoming election? Better still how can any of us cast a Republican vote and tolerate seeing fellow Americans go four more years without health care? Universal health care must happen and the time is now. It is our RIGHT.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Leave it to the universe to send the most unlikely person to give an attitude adjustment. Conservative, former Nixon speechwriter, Ferris Bueller attendance taker, game show trivia expert and most recently, evolution denier Ben Stein reminds us just how historic this election is. (source)
