Stuffed

Last night we took the kids too see Ratatouille. OMG! It was so adorable. My niece Jessica wanted to eat at a French restaurant afterwards. We ate out before the movie and that was an eye-opener for me on a personal level.

Tomorrow, July 1st marks one year of me eating healthy. The weight loss has been phenomenal but believe me when I tell you that is the least of the rewards I have gotten health-wise. Needless to say, in an effort to eat healthy I don't eat out a lot. Let me clarify that- I actually eat out every week, but it's in the same place and I order the same thing. Last night before the movie, we were off the beaten trail.

I ordered a broiled seafood combo and specifically asked for very little butter. Well screw that, they prepared it the way they always do. The problem came after I ate most of it. Afterwards I was so stuffed it was awful! We stopped off at a park because we had time too kill before the movie and I wanted to walk. That's supposed to help, right? Wrong. It didn't help one bit. I felt so sluggish. I didn't eat an enormous amount of food. I think it was the way it was prepared that didn't agree with my lighter way.

Thus far today, I've had two slices of 7 grain bread and two eggs. That's the way I eat most of the time. Today will be fresh fruit and cottage cheese. Last night's meal left me with the worst feeling in world but I guess I can take that as progress.

Today is the Day For "Sicko"

"It's been a weirdly funny week. First Larry King bumped me for Paris Hilton. Then today, when CNBC invited me to the floor of the New York Stock Exchange for an interview, the stock exchange said I was barred from the building. On top of that, Tony Blair is gone, Cheney says he's no longer answerable to anyone's elected government, and I simply don't want an iPhone. Just another week in America."

Hope you enjoy the movie!

Yours,
Michael Moore
mmflint@aol.com

Now, watch this clip as Michael Moore actually has to remind this elitist snob that she HAS health insurance while many DO NOT! The Republican party has zero compassion and the Dems have no guts. BTW- When you see the film, stay until the ending credits. Tom Morello did an original song for the film!

Bloggers Reinvent

"We must never forget that art is not a form of propaganda; it is a form of truth.
John F. Kennedy, October 26, 1963"

Blogs are creating a new media that empowers the real, unrepresented people and calling the old media on its incredible hypocrisy, sexism and classism at the same time. Bloggers are the real rock stars.

So with that said: What's up with senators giving themselves a $4,400.00 a year raise and they won’t pass the new minimum wage hike? Where is the outrage? $170,000 a year to them while the rest of America works 2 jobs with no health insurance!

George W. Bush just asserted Executive Privilege to reject demands too turn over subpoenaed documents to the Congressional panels investigating AG Gonzales and the firings at the Justice Dept. This criminal president/dictator is worse than Nixon!

Julie: Locked-Up On Love

Last weekend Julie and I were on the phone watching Lock-Up! Have you seen this series about male prisoners with nothing to do all day but push ups and squats. Julie was particularly drawn to one upstanding fella by the name of Curtis Allgier, 27. Alliger happens to be a skinhead who a few days ago made headline news for killing a guard while in custody while recieving medical treatment.

I was watching the coverage on CNN and Dr. Drew Pinsky (who I adore) said that the head to toe tattoos that Curtis sports are clear indications of severe childhood physical abuse. The person marks themselves as if to say to the world, stay away from me, I'm dangerous. I called Julie immediately with my new found insight into Curtis. In case you missed Curt on the original Lock-Up, they are doing a marathon on MSNBC this weekend!

I photoshopped the tattoos away. If only removing the scars were that easy, right?

Certain Aspects of My Life

"Everything is exactly as it needs to be. We need to accept that, and focus on the lesson within the challenges- not focus on how to get done with the challenge itself. ~ Anonymous"

I really need to remember that line. It so applies to me. The other night was great fun. I got to be in the same room again as the one and only TOM MORELLO performing as The Nightwatchman. He played his acoustic guitar like you can't believe and called for Bush to be tried and convicted as a war criminal- I was in heaven.

The way I came about seeing the sold out show at the North Star Bar in Philly was because I located a ticket holder on craigslist.com. The guy called me a couple of times and at the last minute the ticket was mine! I need to save money for my trip but this show, I could not resist. The guy also suggested I just pick him up and we go together. Yea, thats where the story gets interesting right? WRONG.

I said yes to his idea of picking him up and riding together to the venue. He was in the city and I was uncertain of directions (story of my life). More importantly, I could tell by his voice he was my age and he said he saw Rage like five times and Audioslave like eight times so I was intrigued. Was I finally going to meet my political counter part? Would this guy be my matching bookend? Would he be cute as an added bonus? The possibilities soured as one friend noted, "He sounds like a cool guy."

I gave his info to four different people and did a little background check on the area I was picking him up in. A friend suggested I get there early and see if he actually comes out of the address where he claims to live and not from down the street or alley. Good looking out and I did just that.

I knew when I got to the neighborhood and saw folks coming and going that this was not my scene. I uttered the word "boring" to myself and waited while talking on my cell with the car doors locked as an added security measure. Sure enough he appeared as planned. Very much my age range dressed in frat boy chic gear- UGH. Like the drug deal I never made, I handed him the twenty and asked for the ticket. Polite conversation on the way to venue threw up several red flags that a platonic friendship was not likely possible.

He made several remarks about how some areas of the city were really "dark" and no place he would travel into referring of course to race. Hmmm interesting. I wondered if he knew that Tom Morello is half black? When we got the venue right away I spotted skin heads gathered out front. I asked rhetorically, "Oh geez, are they skin heads?" He replied in a demeaning tone informing me that they were just some bald guys as if I randomly accuse bald men of being neo-Nazis. I recognized the symbols on their tee-shirts, the suido swastika tattoos and the white laces in their black boots! When we got inside we were told they were in fact skin heads who were there to protest Tom. My friend AKA Mr. Delightful took their leaf lets while I gave them a snide, "no thank you." He told me they weren't bothering anyone when I expressed concern for Tom's safety. This guy challenged me several times throughout the evening and was pounding down the beers. He didn't like that I had correctly identified the skinheads on sight but thankfully we agreed to separate for the concert so I could go up front. I met a few people and talked to some of Tom's roadies. The staff at the bar handled the skin heads and Tom safely entered the venue.

After the show Tom did a meet and greet signing tee shirts and CD's. Mr. Delightful acknowledged his need to wait until I was done with an annoyed, "What choice do I have?" Later he saw that I was first in line and remarked, "Oh your first in line? Good Girl!" Ewwww.

As you can imagine I couldn't drop his ass off fast enough. It's so complicated. Aren't there any men out there I get really interested in? Anyway, Tom remembered meeting me in NYC (Look, I'm choosing to believe that OK!) with my friend Evan Greer of Riot Folk Collective and said that he was just with Evan the night before. My Nightwatchman tee shirt is signed and I haven't taken it off since, it eases the frustration.

Did Larry Really Dump Michael Moore to Interview Paris Ho-Bag?

The following is a blog post I read elsewhere but thought it was worth reposting. I feel like I'm preaching to the choir. I know the people who read this blog "get it" but isn't it frightening to think about the people at CNN, who have a lot more money and power then we'll ever have, making decisions like this one?

TUESDAY, JUNE 26, 2007

Dear Larry,
There are not many people who are blessed to have a position such as the one in which you find yourself today. I knew your name from years ago. I knew that if someone was on Larry’s show, it was a big deal. That guest would be smart, contribute, and poignant. I would walk away from your interviews, Larry, feeling as if I’d just been let in on a secret dinner conversation. I used to find your questions imaginative, original, and somewhat interesting and clever. Your suspenders, with matching ties… really, that is such a cute idea. It spells class all the way.
Your show used to have movers and shakers on it. Your show was once significant to the American society, as your show was not only entertaining, but educational and provokative as well. What a legacy you had going, Larry! Unheard of! Unprecedented! CNN! YOU! THE FIRST! GOOO LARRY!
Is it true you bumped Michael Moore from your show to interview a celebrity famous for her porn and drunk driving? Really? Remember Michael Moore? He made Farenheit 911? Changed how we Americans viewed the war? Perhaps your manorexia has caused your brain to eat itself, and you don’t recall. Or, maybe, CNN is owned by some neo-cons, and the decision wasn’t really up to you, it was up to the people who own CNN? Either way, Larry, I am sure you are hitting yourself. I know, I can’t imagine if I had to be you and sit there across fom some poptart who’s labia has seen more sunshine than Cheney’s drunk chrome on a hunting afternoon. I can’t imagine what you will have to tell yourself as you prep for that interview in the makeup chair.Just remember, Larry, as history is written, there will be proof spilled everywhere, like ink. The truth will berry-stain: impossible to forget stain… And you know what? I am going to look back at this time, a time when real journalists could have saved us all some grief by reporting truth instead of soaps, and I will laugh and say “Remember how Larry King dumped Michael Moore for Paris Hilton?”

Or maybe I won’t. I’ll probably have forgotten about you, Larry, and your gossip show. You just became forgettable.

Have a good interview, Larry. I’m off to see SICKO, and try to see about changing this world, not my ratings.

Sincerely,
Hollywood Farmgirl

Eating Healthy=Self Worth

*NOTE: I found the following blog post on myspace and really enjoyed it. It makes a lot of sense.

"You Are What You Eat . . . and then some!

I had the privilege of attending this free seminar that my sister invited me to. This was the best wake up call to have some self respect! The mission of this seminar was to educate people that are on medication who are diabetic, who have high blood pressure, who are over weight, who have high cholesterol and other health related factors caused by food choices, and that by the right food choices consumed, they can change their life and be taken off medication. A lifestyle change centered around the foods you eat and how it can have a huge impact on your LIFE! The speakers well known in their field went straight to the point, "the right foods can heal or the wrong foods can kill you!" Only the individual can control this. Educating oneself on how foods can affect the body is key. Understanding the difference between whole foods vs. processed foods and the difference of eating vegetable/fruits vs. meat. To know the cause and effect to our body by what we consume is vital to living healthy. An awakening moment was revealed when one of the speakers shared a story on why he decided he wanted to educate people on nutrition. While he was doing his residency and assisting the house doctor, he was writing the prescription that the doctor prescribed for a patient that had high blood pressure. While he was writing this, the patient asked him when would the medication cure him. At that moment when he told the patient that the prescribed medication will not cure him and he would have to be on medication for life, he realized his purpose.

With loving ourselves in a busy world of work and play, one should not compromise one's self worth by not being aware. I guess the question might be, how to get the unaware aware? The government would be a great place to start! Don't you think?

Some side effects from EATING the right foods are of course the health benefits. . . and great skin, weight control, and of course wearing all the great clothes to look and feel absolutely fantastic!!! Who doesn't want all that!? =)"

It's Summertime

My last day of work is today. Now begins summer vacation until the end of August. I think I'll pack this weekend just to see what I still need. Mostly bathing suits and cover-ups are the planned attire. Beaches of California here I come! Oh yea, this place too. Leave it to the Americans to create a tacky version of Europe right here. Fun stuff!

So Paris is getting paid to give and interview by the "reputable" news media. Lovely. That's ethical. Aren't we sick of these people being shoved at us? What's the answer- don't watch? How about news outlets growing a pair and don't run the crap to begin with. Like we really need insight into the Paris Prison experience? Spare me. I read this quote the other day on the Sean Lennon myspace blog. It's from some British guy (Don't you adore the Brits?) I love it!

"Thoughts of CNN :- The sooner that 'media' collapses and people are left to make their own decisions based on independent thoughts the better. In my opinion CNN is an American brainwashing society and shouldn't warrant anyone's' attention at all. I read that Ted Turner is reputedly worth 2 billion US dollars!

I Want To Throw Up

True story here. When I was 15 years old I met Scott Baio. No big deal, right? WRONG. Very big deal in my life. I adored Scott Baio for more years then I care to admit. He was very sweet when we met and I even have a pic with him buried deep in my basement.
So Scott is 45 and not married. Join the club Scott and I suspect his reasons for not being hitched are very similar to my own (Fear of commitment, trust issues, loser magnet blah, blah, blah). Now Scott is getting a life coach and delving into the reasons behind his single/childless status via a reality show. I will cringe and be watching with one eye open.

The Scott I knew and loved.

Keep at it! You're worth it.

The other day I left a comment on an amazing blog and the writer of the blog replied to me. It made me feel so good I thought I would share it with you....

"Nothing could be harder than losing your mother who also happens to be your best friend. I dread the day I'm in those shoes but just for today, I'm grateful for my weight loss and my willingness to feel my feelings. I'm realizing I still have a huge trust issue, but damn this clarity does feel good. Reality is a better place. Your Mom raised a really cool daughter."

"Liz, what a sweet thing to say. Thank you. And congrats on your own journey! Life is perplexing; I must keep it simple. Even then I still find myself hitting the chocolate again tonight.

Ah well, perhaps it's because Father's Day is tomorrow. The fun never stops around here. Truly though, the vast majority of the time I have great peace and serenity. Walking through those feelings is the only way to get anywhere worth going.

Keep at it! You're worth it."

Savoring The Moment

Once again the Hilton's went to visit their little treasure Paris in jail. Happy Father's Day, right? Anyway, Mom came out of the jail and stated Paris has been shivering so bad she thinks she BROKE HER ARM! Of course the sympathetic Paris Hilton fans all over the net have their own take on the situation. Read some of these compassionate and supportive comments. (HAHA!) Happy Monday everyone!

"Let me at her. I will break her other arm."

"I say now is the perfect time to do another season of Who wants to be a Hilton."

"One of my fave movie lines ever is in "Liar, Liar" and Jim Carrey gets on the phone with one of his repeat offender clients who wants is calling from jail and wants to know how to get out. He shouts into the phone, "Stop breaking the law, asshole!!!"

"I'm sure we'll hear a complete rundown on what their visit entailed via Hilton family bff Barbara Walters today on the View."

"She probably broke it whacking the guards so she could get an extra jello."

"Please just release her! I'm so sick of Kathy and Nicky Hilton bitching about "poor Paris". Let her out. We are losing valuable tax money from the booze she's not buying."

"Shivering from the cold ??? I think not it's called DETOX !!!! Her body doesn't know what to do without the COKE & SPERM !!!!"

"I didn't even realize that it could be DETOX. You may have just been being silly or poking fun, but that does make total sense. (detox patients do shake uncontrollably correct?)
I wonder if that was her "medical condition"?
She probably hasn't been without drugs, alcohol or pain pills this long in her life."

"STFU Kathy Hilton. She acts like her precious princess Paris is thrown into a dungeon in the Bastille. I guess taking responsibility for your actions is something mom and dad never taught because THEY don't do it, either. Shitty-ass parenting."

Loving Life

Lot's going on here with me but there are only a few things I feel up to posting about today. First off, I'm loving these stretch hair bands I found at Free People. My roots are showing and I'm putting off getting them done so they will be fresh before I leave for Los Angeles. Enter a cute, comfy hair band. I have the yellow, I ordered the red and turquoise to take with me when I go away.

I've made a new discovery on the path to eating healthy. It's that old staple called low fat cottage cheese (1 or 2%). Recently I had it at a diner for breakfast. Normally I don't do cheese but I tried this and it was so tasty. I guess because I've been off pizza cheese for a year now. This is positively yummy and easy to eat. It makes a delicious snack or meal any time of day, and can be used as an ingredient in many recipes.

Lastly, I want to say that I enjoyed the last episode of The Sopranos. I like the way the writer conveyed the whole looking over your shoulder for the rest of your life premise. I thought that was really amazing. I for one was a nervous wreck! The ending was a feeling not so much a blood bath. I heard years ago that series creator David Chase, would never kill off his lead character Tony Soprano so this ending made perfect sense.

Charlie Manson has some severe problems too. Can he go home?

Severe medical problems that didn't prevent her from attending the MTV Movie Awards hours before reporting to jail...whatever!

Bullshit. The only problem that bitch has is a case of the dontwannas. Dontwanna be in jail. She'll be just as rich as ever when she comes out. GET OVER IT. Some people lose their jobs and a lot more over short jail terms like this.

Alot of people in that jail have issues.......THAT'S WHY THEY ARE IN THERE!!!!! HELL...LET THEM ALL OUT THEN IS MY VOTE!

No, Jeffrey Dahmer had "severe problems". Paris is just afraid of being in jail.

The Million Dollar Question

In the course of doing my job today I was chatting with a seventy-three year old gentleman. He asked how many children I had and I told him none. After a few more sentences he worked up to asking the question that always comes next- how old are you? I told him I was forty-four. He said I didn't look it and how did I stay so young looking. I laughed and told him I was never married and had no kids. He was really surprised. I told him I'm picky and why shouldn't I be! He asked how a "pretty" girl like me was able to dodge the alter and I told him I wanted to dodge it and the kids. He asked about my living arrangements and I pointed out that I have a good life I'm in no hurry to give up. Wouldn't it be nice it if my reasons for being single were just that simple?

The truth is, I didn't have a good relationship with my father and in my twenties and early thirties I was one of those loser magnets I always seem to know so much about. I wish I could tell you that my baggage was glamorous Louis Vuitton luggage but it's just plain old Samsonite. I was the gorilla in the cage throwing around my Samsonite luggage for many years trying without relief to manage the weight of my issues. Finally sick of the pain and heartbreak that was my life, I decided to unpack my bags for good.

The man told me about his son who was forty and single. He said he would go home and tell his son he met a pretty girl who worked, had no kids and was never married. He said I should meet his son. I just joked and said,

"Yea and no history of substance abuse or mental illness either... I'm a great catch!"

As we laughed together, I noticed the look shock on his face. My frankness seem to take him off guard. Finally I excused myself wishing him a nice day. I would never hand out my name and phone number like that even if I thought it meant a potential Mr. Right coming along and handing me a car, a house and a life. Really, I have learned there is no such thing as someone else making you happy... it only LOOKS that way on the surface. Nothing is free, it's no ones job and in the end this "pretty" woman is responsible for herself.

An Open Letter To Paris Hilton

paris__jail.jpg

Dear Paris,

Recently TMZ.com reported that you were in prison and feeling "cold and scared." You had frequent visits from not only a lawyer but your psychologist to help with the transition. In the fortunate light of your name and families money you were released early. Oh wonderful for you. I'm sure you welcomed that news as anyone would.

Now that you are free I'd like to make a suggestion. Please consider the people on this planet who are "cold and scared" every day of their lives with no relief in sight. What about using your celebrity and wealth to create safe havens for battered women and their children. I'm sure you weren't able to encounter many, but the prison you were just in is filled with abused women who were once abused children.

Cold and scared could mean the turning point in your life. Maybe it's time to grow up? I challenge you to use this experience not to walk a fiercer red carpet, but to bring real meaning into your life and restore integrity to the name of Hilton.

Clearly the night before your incarceration your judgment was still be foggy. I'm guessing in an effort to appear strong you decided to make the MTV movie awards show event only to find yourself publicly scorned and humiliated. Imagine turning your life around and becoming a person of honor and integrity- the person you were always meant to be. No more brushes with the law, no more penis jokes. The choice is yours as it has always been. Let's see what you've learned from your experience.

Warmly,
Liz

Julia Sweeny is Like Me (She Hates Bush Too!)

Saturday, May 26, 2007 Click here for her blog
You know, I can’t even hear him anymore. When President Bush is on TV, or on the radio, I almost always instinctively change the channel or the station. I can tolerate listening to Bush in post script – I mean, I can hear people making comments about his speeches or “quips” or whatever he does that constitutes talking. I can hold by breath and just barely take it when there is commentary about his speeches, but I can’t actually listen or watch them as they occur. I just hate him too much.

And it doesn’t feel like a cerebral, intellectual choice. It feels like it’s instinctive, and I am repulsed. Like he is not just a president who I really don’t like, but instead spoiled milk in my fridge, milk that I innocuously lift to my nose and then recoil from and nearly gag. I can’t help it. When I am in the car and his voice invades my otherwise thoughtful sanctuary, I watch my hand change the station even before I am aware that he is speaking! Yes. It’s that bad. It’s below the level of awareness, and I cannot control it and I don’t want to control it. Usually, if it’s an important speech, I will read it in the paper the next day. Then, I can digest it -- nearly. But I cannot hear his voice, I cannot watch his cocky arrogant teenagish demeanor, I cannot peer into his chicken eyes and I cannot stomach his permanent smirk. I hate how he rests his body weight on one foot and leans in with one shoulder, like the smart aleck in junior high (see how I’m making him less mature with each analogy?) and I hate his superior snicker. I hate him. It’s beyond anything rational, I just HATE HIM SO MUCH.

Unfortunately, yesterday, at the gym, I was on the stair master and Bush was in the middle of his latest speech (which I think was actually given the night before) and the spectacle of him was on both the TV channels right in front of me and I have no idea how to change them and other people were watching, so I really couldn’t. The sound was off, but you could read the text of his speech below him.

All I can say about this is, every time I write off this last eight years or bemoan how we have injured the world by electing this pig, or worry, worry, worry that we will never regain any sort of respect in the world, and every time I think of other president’s blunders and think how bad Bush is compared with even the worst other presidents we’ve had and then I just think I’ve settled that in my mind: Bush is the worst, he’s taken us closer to the brink, blah blah blah end-of-story: every time I’ve done this, when I am confronted with the man afresh – when I can’t avoid him – when he is there before me as I step up and on the stair master for example…I am again shocked and flabbergasted that the specter of him is so ghastly. So much worse than I had thought before; before when I thought he was the WORST POSSIBLE. How does he do that? It’s like he had broken some physical law or something.

And I have to admit, I have a hard time listening to the news about all the violence in Iraq. I can’t really do anything about it in the short term. It upsets me so deeply and I don’t know what to do with it. I don’t want to get jaded, or thick-skinned about it. I think doing that is somehow to lose my humanity, to lose my real compassion, it’s almost an insult to those who are dying. I am tired of having Mulan watch me well up in tears as we drive to gymnastics as I listen to another report about another death squad. Another group of bodies found in the morgue, of another bomb in a marketplace or another group of soldiers turned up burned beyond recognition.

I think, back when I believed in God, I thought that - my being upset about something meant something to the Universe. Like God was listening. It must have been some extension of being coached to pray about my troubles. This idea that collective anger or fear meant something, changed something somehow. But now I see little reason to get upset repeatedly about something that I can do nothing about.

I am doing probably the minimum that each person who is reading this blog might be doing too – I am contributing money to different candidates and to the Democrats, I am teaching my daughter, bit by bit, about how to be an informed citizen. I send in the occasional letter that someone sends me to then send to my representatives. And when I think of doing more, I think I am barely able to get the stuff done in my life that I have to get done right now! I know, I’m just a complainer. Oh! I hate that too! I’m just a complainer!

So in the meantime, I jerk my arm at the radio when Bush is speaking and recoil from my stair master as he blathers on and sometimes I have a news blackout just so I can drive around town without getting distressed. And now it’s been going on so long! It’s become a way of life. Mulan, for example, knows of no other President than this one. She does not know what it is like to be living in a country not at war.

And you can’t believe what it’s like (or maybe you can, maybe you are in the same boat) to be explaining how and why we are in this war to a seven year old. I’m watching Mulan become aware of the world while I explain to her what she just heard on the radio, or how we see people in military fatigues at the airport, or how – when we were at my brother’s house recently and his wife’s brother, who is a pilot, had recently returned from a tour in Iraq and why he and his wife were hoping so much that he didn’t have to go back. And it isn’t glamorous and it isn’t even manly or exciting, it’s just tragic, the whole damn thing. And I have to explain it again and again and it’s a tricky dance because I don’t want her to become cynical or resigned to government being so awful. But so far, that’s all she knows.

Ug. I don’t know, I just needed to rant about this this morning I suppose.

Five Cheap Travel Trips

1. China

· Why now: "China remains the top travel bargain," says Arthur Frommer. "No one can justify not immediately signing up for a trip." The primary reason, he says, is the currency exchange rate. The U.S. dollar goes far: You'll find that even four-star hotels won't strain your budget. The country has also become more tourist-friendly, with more tour operators working in the country than ever before. Enjoy a stroll along the Great Wall or browse for hand-dyed silks and jade jewelry on Shanghai's Nanjing Road.

· Frommer's Deal: Explore five Chinese cities on a 12-day "Splendid China" or "Historic China" tour from San Francisco-based China Focus Travel. Prices start at $988, including round-trip airfare from San Francisco (tack on $200 for New York departures). You can spend a day in philosopher Confucius' hometown of Qufu, visit a silk factory and pick tea leaves at a plantation. You'll lodge at four-star hotels throughout, including the Taishan International Hotel, which offers Western-style hotel amenities like high-speed Internet access and satellite TV.

2. Buenos Aires

· Why now: "If you can, choose countries where the currency is weak," says Pauline. Argentina, where the exchange rate is three pesos to the dollar, is no exception. (Before Argentina devalued its currency in 2002, one peso was worth $1 U.S. -- and higher local prices sent Argentineans here for a bargain vacation.) You can gorge yourself on the country's specialty steaks, split a bottle of Argentinean Malbec wine and then tango 'til the wee hours at the city's tango clubs -- all without putting a dent in your wallet. Our summer is the Argentine winter, so you'll encounter the best bargains and mild springlike temperatures, says Pauline. Looking for a hotter vacation? Schedule your trip for the fall or winter.

· Frommer's Deal: Spend seven days exploring the city with a Buenos Aires air and hotel package from Gate 1 Travel, starting at $799 per person. You'll stay at your choice of seven hotels, including the Hotel Emperador, where guests receive a cell phone for use during their stay.

3. Orlando, Fla.

· Why now: New budget travel providers have hit the scene, says Arthur, so airfare and hotel packages have become increasingly affordable this year as the competition heats up. That's good news, because your major expense -- theme park tickets -- isn't getting any cheaper. (For a family of four, you'd spend a total of $916 on five-day Disney Park Hopper passes.) "Some of the best bargains are currently off-site hotels," says Pauline, so look for a package that includes a car rental.

· Frommer's Deal: Try the "Orlando on a Budget" package from eLeisureLink.com. For as little as $318 a person, you'll get round-trip airfare, a midsize rental car and five nights at the hotel of your choice. (Depending on your travel dates, you'll have as many as 60 to choose from, including four-star Regal Palms Resort where you'll stay in a three-bedroom townhouse with a fully-equipped kitchen.) Click here for deals on theme parks.

4. London

· Why now: No American would ever call London a bargain destination, given the current exchange rate of one British pound to nearly $2 in the U.S. The city has become even pricier over the last five years, as the dollar has fallen 39% against the pound. That said, new budget providers on the scene are aiming to make it more affordable, Pauline says. So don't let cost concerns prevent you from scheduling a trip to the Tower of London or book tickets for the city's bustling theater scene.

· Frommer's Deal: Stretch your travel dollar further with a six-day air-and-hotel package from Gate 1 Travel for as little as $499. You'll stay at your choice of seven hotels, including the Waldorf Hilton where each room sports a plasma-screen TV and guests can enjoy an afternoon tea in the hotel's patisserie and Champagne bar.

5. Egypt

· Why now: The Great Pyramid at Cairo? The Valley of the Kings at Luxor? Egypt truly is the must-do trip of a lifetime, says Arthur. Travel there by Europeans has always been strong, he says, and it's picking up momentum in the U.S. (It's a scorcher in summer, cautions Pauline, so plan your trip for mid- to late fall.) To entice more travelers, plenty of tour operators are offering phenomenal deals. The dollar is also strong in Egypt: Before the government allowed the currency value to float in 2003 to help relieve its trade deficit, one U.S. dollar was worth four Egyptian pounds. Today it's nearly six Egyptian pounds.

· Frommer's Deal: For fall tours, Misr Travel offers a seven-day "Budget Cruncher" tour package starting at $1,499 per person. You'll spend three days seeing the sights of Cairo (and staying in a bungalow at the Movenpick Pyramids Hotel), followed by a four-day Nile cruise from Aswan to Luxor.

I Just Want This Posted On My Blog For Life

What is it With the Gays?

I'm baffled. I read these blogs made by gays and when a gay person like Rosie O'Donnell who has some viewing audience power and uses that power for the rights of gay marriage and impeaching Bush, certain gays are the first ones to slam her and her millions of supporters (straight and gay) with terms like "cult followers." They make snarky remarks about her and accuse her of grand standing never once acknowledging that the news media (especially Fox) blasts about her on a daily basis because they are homophobes! The gay run blogs I'm reading want to fawn over old alcoholic Hollywood starlets like Bette Davis and Joan Crawford or the new celebrities, all the while undermining current out activists like Rosie.

Roseanne Barr recently took heat for the following statement...

"Never once in my 54 years have I ever once heard a gay or lesbian person who’s politically active say one thing about anything that was not about them. They don’t care about minimum wage, they don’t care about any other group other than their own self because you know, some people say being gay and lesbian is a totally narcissistic thing and sometimes I wonder.

I’ve never heard any of them say anything except for “accept me ‘cause I’m gay.”
It’s just, it’s screwed. It’s no different than the evangelicals, it’s the same mindset. They want you to accept Jesus and you guys want us to all believe it’s ok to be gay. And a lot of us, a lot of them, I do, I don’t give a damn who anybody has sex with, as long as they’re not underage and an animal. I don’t give a damn, it’s none of my damn business. I’m just sick of all the divisiveness, it’s not getting any of us anywhere. "

As a straight person, I feel for where she is coming from on the divisive note. The gays as much as I love them really do befuddle me. Gay marriage and equal rights sure, but they are amazingly tolerant on these blogs when self-proclaimed Republican commentors show up with some flattering fodder. You're annoyed with Rosie again why? Oh I believe some have referred to HER ego. Interesting.

The bottom line is it's the Internet. You never have to post your picture or give your real name. You can leave it all to the imagination of your readers. You can spin a whole righteous, relevant life for yourself when the truth in some cases is quite different. Now I don't believe that a gay person has to automatically like every other gay person but in this case gang, let's face it... you don't have too many prominent gays with cross over status pleading your case. Most of the time you have to settle for being happy when they are willing to come out.

In my quest for left wing blog reading, I think I'll stick with The Huffington Post because the men that take an occasional swipe at Rosie are straight and apparently never watched her on The View and have no vested interest in her causes.

Cop Watch LA: Sherman Austin Today

I wrote to Sherman Austin when he was in prison. Just a note showing some support and encouragement. He wrote back and thanked me. I'm thrilled to see he is still speaking out within the confines of his probation. Sherman was ALWAYS a law abiding citizen who was conveniently singled out for his financial inability to fight back within a legal system that works on behalf of the wealthy. He was made an example under the Patriot Act. This is Sherman's new organization called Cop Watch LA. Sherman continues working on behalf of his community through the message in his music.

Sherman on stage.

On A Personal Note

MysteryPoster.jpg

I've been going on and on about the war here at UA. It's really been bothering me so I'm unloading. That's what blogs are for right? Well, at least that's what I've turned mine into for now. It helps with my intense Sagittarius personality to have an outlet. If you think this blog gets heated, try living in my head for a day. OUCH.

I've been reading some cool new blogs along with the old ones, so check over my links section for new stuff. If you don't see your link there, don't get insulted. It's just that I can get to your page from else where. Ross the Intern is a new addiction along with the really cool fashion blog of Free People. Their main office is here in Philly and fashion is always a passion/obsession with me. There is no way I can link to every blog I read, trust me it's far too many.

I made a profile on J-date for a hot minute. One day I decided I needed a professional Jewish man in my life. Huh? Do people really get to "decide" those things for themselves? I didn't pay for a subscription, I did the free thing just to test the waters being a first timer and all. I mostly got sixty year old men who chose to completely ignore my profile age requirements (about 20 year younger than themselves). I talked to one guy but he never contacted me again so I figured the hell with this, I'd rather be rejected in real life. I think these pay hook-up places are just selling people hope. Trust me, there are lots of assholes cruising the net. I think I'll drop this whole idea for now. Who needs the frustration? After all summer is coming and I'm getting heading out on a jet airliner.

Roseanne On Rosie- Love Her!

"Rosie O'Donnell is a brave and loving woman who seeks a better world for all. I am proud of her and I agree that Elizabeth failed to come to her support, because Elizabeth supports bush and the war, and also thinks rosie called our troops terrorists. Our troops are NOT TERRORISTS, THEY ARE HOSTAGES TO/FOR THE BUSH FAMILY AND THEIR RICH OIL FRIENDS AROUND THE WORLD. THE TROOPS ARE CAPTIVE AND BEING TORTURED AND KILLED SO THAT BUSH/CHENEY CAN MAKE MORE MONEY. THE COMMANDER IN CHIEF IS A TERRORIST!!! BRING THE TROOPS HOME!!!!! They are working class americans!!!! dj connor would be one of them! After the repubs sold out all their jobs and high schools, hospitals, and college educations they have no choice but to join the service, where they are not treated well and not respected and not valued as they should be!!! They know this and are begging to be heard...they do not like being shot at while unprotected and unarmed. My god, the cowardice of pelosi and reid is staggering. They are traitors to the troops!!!!! WORSE THAN BUSH!!!!!!!!" ~ ROSEANNE BARR, winner of 4 emmys
