Testify

The movie ran through me
The glamour subdue me
The tabloid untie me
I'm empty please fill me
Mister anchor assure me
That Baghdad is burning
Your voice it is so soothing
That cunning mantra of killing
I need you my witness
To dress this up so bloodless
To numb me and purge me now
Of thoughts of blaming you
Yes the car is our wheelchair
My witness your coughing
Oily silence mocks the legless
Ones who travel now in coffins
On the corner
The jury's sleepless
We found your weakness
And it's right outside our door
Now testify ~ RATM

Fort Lewis, which this month has suffered its worst losses of the war, will no longer conduct individual memorial ceremonies for soldiers killed in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Instead, the post will hold one ceremony for all soldiers killed each month, the Fort Lewis acting commanding general, Brig. Gen. William Troy, wrote in a memo to commanders and staff last week.

"As much as we would like to think otherwise, I am afraid that with the number of soldiers we now have in harm's way, our losses will preclude us from continuing to do individual memorial ceremonies," Troy wrote in the memo, according to a copy obtained by United for Peace Pierce County and posted on the group's Web site. A post spokesman confirmed the policy change Tuesday. It will start in June.

Healthy Eating II

By Jonny Bowden, PhD., C.N.S.

* Egg Omlets-

No yolks in your omelettes? That's just utterly unnecessary. The yolk contains lutein and zeaxanthin, which are crucial for eye health. Egg yolks are also an important source of phosphatidylcholine, a nutrient that boosts brain health. Worried about your cholesterol levels? Consider this: Half the fat in the yolk isn't even saturated.

*Farm-Raised Salmon-

You'd think eating penned salmon would be the healthier way to go, but the farm-raised fish are pumped full of antibiotics and are lower in nutritional value than their wild relatives. In addition, wild salmon get their red color from an antioxidant in their natural food source, krill. Farmed salmon get their color from dye.

*Supermarket Cereal-

Most supermarket cereals are fiber lightweights and are also loaded with sugar. The best cereals are old-fashioned oatmeal, and a few standouts like Fiber One and All-Bran. Check the labels and choose cereals that have fewer than 5 grams of sugar and more than 5 grams of fiber per serving.

*Granola Bars-

Most granola bars are simply candy bars in disguise, with very little fiber, lots of processed carbs, and a ton of sugar. You're better off making your own healthier version from raw oats, chopped almonds, coconut flakes, raisins and a dollop of raw organic honey.

*Frozen Yogurt-

The only thing fro-yo has in common with real yogurt (the plain, non-frozen kind) is that they're both white. The frozen stuff doesn't have live cultures, which help maintain digestive health and the nonfat varieties are a mix of chemicals and artificial sweeteners. You're better off with a serving of organic ice cream.

*Apple Juice-

It's sweet, refreshing and a favorite among kids. But most apple juice is nothing more than sugar water with apple flavoring. One cup of apple juice has no fiber, 117 calories and 27 grams of sugar. And most people consume way more than a cup at a time. Stick to fiber-rich apples and skip the juice.

"The View" Crashes and Burns Without Rosie

"The Queen of Nice, The Queen of Spice, Ro Did Entice; She Scared the Mice." ~
xoxox ItsMissDenise

I just this minute tuned off the first ten minutes of The View and IT WAS HORRIBLE. Barbara Walters of course does the whole, Rosie wasn't fired and we still love her routine. Hasselbackstabber took thirty seconds to say the forgiveness has begun (For WHAT Elizabitch, say for what exactly). Whoopi Goldberg was guest hosting and refused to comment one way or the other. Thanks Whoopi, that always makes for great television. Finally, Joy mentions former hosts Lisa Ling, Debbie Matenopoulos and Star Jones and how great they are doing (as if Rosie O'Donnell was ever in the same category as those HACKS) then the subject was changed and I turned off that old lady show FOR GOOD.

Cindy Sheehan is Done & Who Can Blame Her?

By ANGELA K. BROWN
AP

"I've been wondering why I'm killing myself and wondering why the Democrats caved in to George Bush," Sheehan told The Associated Press by phone Tuesday while driving from her property in Crawford to the airport, where she planned to return to her native California.

"I'm going home for awhile to try and be normal," she said.

In what she described as a "resignation letter," Sheehan wrote in her online diary on the "Daily Kos" blog: "Good-bye America ... you are not the country that I love and I finally realized no matter how much I sacrifice, I can't make you be that country unless you want it.

"It's up to you now."

Sheehan began a grass roots peace movement in August 2005 when she set up camp outside the Bush ranch for 26 days, asking to talk with the President about the death of her son, Army Spc. Casey Sheehan. Casey Sheehan was 24 when he was killed in an ambush in Baghdad .....

"I have endured a lot of smear and hatred since Casey was killed and especially since I became the so-called "Face" of the American anti-war movement," Sheehan wrote in the diary.

On Memorial Day, she came to some "heartbreaking conclusions," she wrote.

When she had first taken on Bush, Sheehan was a darling of the liberal left. "However, when I started to hold the Democratic Party to the same standards that I held the Republican Party, support for my cause started to erode and the 'left' started labeling me with the same slurs that the right used," she wrote.

"I guess no one paid attention to me when I said that the issue of peace and people dying for no reason is not a matter of 'right or left', but 'right and wrong,'" the diary says.

Sheehan criticized "blind party loyalty" as a danger, no matter which side it involved, and said the current two-party system is "corrupt" and "rapidly descending into with nary a check or balance: a fascist corporate wasteland."

"Casey died for a country which cares more about who will be the next American Idol than how many people will be killed in the next few months while Democrats and Republicans play politics with human lives," she wrote. It is so painful to me to know that I bought into this system for so many years and Casey paid the price for that allegiance. I failed my boy and that hurts the most."

"I am going to take whatever I have left and go home," Sheehan wrote.

Summer Fragrance

In the warmer weather I need a light fragrance, lighter than my usual CoCo by Chanel. On a recent trip too Sephora I discovered a lovely vanilla fragrance. It smells so refreshing and crisp and it lasts forever on my skin. Click here to see the line. Pure Vanilla is my personal favorite.

War

US_troops_philippines.jpg

I'm so angry over this whole situation. When I see the family members of troops on TV my heart breaks for them and then I get angry again because I know many of them put Bush back in office for a second term. They still hesitate to speak out against this war. When asked directly how they feel about the war, many widows and family members still spew the rhetoric or simply say,

"It's what he wanted to do."

Ok, it's what he wanted to do because he/she bought into the whole patriotic crap this criminal government sells us on a daily basis. Fly another flag, get your yellow magnet but don't protest, don't question. Let the poor and working class send their sons and daughters. The wealthy have a future planned for their offspring and it includes all of their limbs.

The Bush administration has played the American public from day one up too and including 9/11. Some people need to wake the hell up and face it- if you voted for Bush you were hood winked and bamboozled. Bush should be impeached at the very least. Truthfully I believe he is a war criminal. I'm grateful to live in a country where I can make such statements without fear of repercussions, but we can do better. The world is challenging us to do better. This coming election, we should not let them and ourselves down again.

No Secrets Here

Yesterday, I left a few comments for friends on myspace. This morning I got this message from one of those friends asking how I manage to stay so young looking. Her and I are both the same age. The following is her message and my reply...

Hi Liz,
Hey.. how are you?
Thanks for the comment on my page. I'm glad you are a "big deal" around here...lol (This is referring to the comment I left.)
The pic that you have up is good... you look younger. So, what's your secret?

Have a great Memorial Day!

Signed,
XXXXX

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Dear XXXX,
First off, thanks for the compliment! Looking younger is no secret. I will tell you exactly what *I* know to be true for me.
*I never married and I have no children. Big stress reducer right there, wouldn't you agree? HEHE.
*I never abused alcohol or drugs- ever and I don't smoke.
*I am very young at heart and I keep up with current events in news as well as pop culture.
*I have always dated younger men and had younger friends. Surround yourself with youth as opposed to people who hark back to the past all the time.
*I live an examined life which again, keeps me thoughtful and in today.
* I take excellent care of my skin. That means I moisturize daily, STAY OUT OF THE SUN and if a face cream works I buy it!
*I drink tons of H2O not soda or juices. I don't eat white bread, pasta, yogurt or cheeses. That stuff puffs up your face.
* My hair color is professionally done. No flat one color from the grocery store for me. My clothes and make-up are current and age appropriate.
* Finally, I would say genetics has a lot to do with it. My Mom and her mother both had youthful faces.
Memorial Day Weekend 07
"If the same laws were applied to U.S. presidents as were applied to the Nazis after WWII, then every single one of them, every last rich white one of them from Truman on would be hung to death and shot. And this current administration is no exception. It should be hung and tried and shot, as any war criminal should be. For the challenges that we face, they go way beyond administrations, way beyond elections, way beyond every four years of pulling levers, way beyond that. Because this whole rotten system has become so vicious and cruel, that in order to sustain itself, it needs to destroy entire countries and profit from their reconstruction in order to survive. And that's not a system that changes every four years, that's a system that we have to break down, generation after generation after generation after generation..." ~ RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE, COACHELLA 2007
Snubbed
See actress and vegan Alicia Silverstone snub Republican sheep Elizabeth Hasselback after one of her mindless tirades defending the actions of the criminal Bush administration. Personally, I loved it and I think that's what should happen. Anyone who cares too preach on behalf of this so called war should be dismissed. I don't understand people being concerned about playing "nice" with the situation we are in as a country.
Frankly, I don't want Bush supporters/voters/wannabes posting on my blog or being anywhere near my life for that matter. Yes, I feel that strongly about it and while I can't control some areas like the workplace, I will utilize my choices elsewhere like Alicia did. Most people would have just shook that elitist, delusional, facists hand and regretted it later.
Update on my Vacation:
I've been posting the itinerary for my three week trip in July to lovely California.
Recently, I sat up in bed at 4AM with a message that came loud and clear.
I can not justify the drive to Big Sur. The cost of the fuel is not only through the roof, it's wasteful. I can't feel good about using gas to ride around looking at pretty scenes. We will still make it to the Grand Canyon and Vegas but the rest of the time will be spent enjoying the sun in Malibu and a clear conscience.
RIP Leo
The picture below is not my house or my dog, but I was pretty fond of "Leo". This is actually a pretty old picture of me but I just heard the dog seen here (the one with the spots) had to be put down due to illness.
I once went on a ten hour car trip with him. He was a smart dog, but he didn't do well with kids. As I recall, he growled at some little girl at the rest stop.
President Carter Sheads More Light
Carter courageously came down on the Iraq war. Those who voted for Bush should never trust themselves to vote in another election until they are able to educate themselves and find some compassion for their fellow human-beings and the planet.
FROM THE AP
“We now have endorsed the concept of pre-emptive war where we go to war with another nation militarily, even though our own security is not directly threatened, if we want to change the regime there or if we fear that some time in the future our security might be endangered,” he said. “But that’s been a radical departure from all previous administration policies.”
Carter, who won a Nobel Peace Prize in 2002, criticized Bush for having “zero peace talks” in Israel. Carter also said the administration “abandoned or directly refuted” every negotiated nuclear arms agreement, as well as environmental efforts by other presidents.
Carter also offered a harsh assessment for the White House’s Office of Faith-Based and Community Initiatives, which helped religious charities receive $2.15 billion in federal grants in fiscal year 2005 alone.
“The policy from the White House has been to allocate funds to religious institutions, even those that channel those funds exclusively to their own particular group of believers in a particular religion,” Carter said. “As a traditional Baptist, I’ve always believed in separation of church and state and honored that premise when I was president, and so have all other presidents, I might say, except this one.”
Douglas Brinkley, a Tulane University presidential historian and Carter biographer, described Carter’s comments as unprecedented.
“This is the most forceful denunciation President Carter has ever made about an American president,” Brinkley said. “When you call somebody the worst president, that’s volatile. Those are fighting words.”
Carter also lashed out Saturday at British prime minister Tony Blair. Asked how he would judge Blair’s support of Bush, the former president said: “Abominable. Loyal. Blind. Apparently subservient.”
“And I think the almost undeviating support by Great Britain for the ill-advised policies of President Bush in Iraq have been a major tragedy for the world,” Carter told British Broadcasting Corp. radio.
Weary
My Moms and I were talking the other day. These kids are over in that hell hole called Iraq putting their lives on the line everyday, right? Does anyone stop to the consider the mental and emotional condition these men and women will be in when they get home?
My Mom and I made a mental list of the potential damages we are in for as a society. More drug addiction, alcohol abuse, post traumatic stress disorder, homelessness, domestic abuse, divorce and not to mention more guns being used in random acts of violence.
We haven't even begun to pay for this war. When these soldiers return, it will be one sad, tragic story after another. These men and women are killing machines now. How do you shut that off and become the person you were when you left at 19 years of age? We can look forward too one new syndrome after another just like the Vietnam vets.
Kathy Griffin is Back
My Life on the D List is back and I can't wait! It looks like I won't have too because BRAVO is streaming the first episode here.
Kathy is of course divorced from Matt and her Dad passed away since this was taped. Her parents were so cute together. I'm sad for her when she talks about Matt because I think a lot of women get lost in their perception of who their man is and not necessarily the reality. It's a crushing blow when the truth finally hits. For those of you who don't know, Kathy caught Matt red handed stealing large amounts of money from her bank account. A gambling addiction has been suggested on Matt's part.
Kathy recently appeared on The View with Barbara Walters and she was great. Rosie really wants Kathy as her replacement and so do I. I love hearing strong, intelligent (Translation: Liberal) women with a point of view otherwise The View is not the least bit interesting.
Don't Let 'Em Steal Your Joy
LizDrivingHomeward.jpg
Me, driving this past Friday when it was nice out.
Today started out gorgeous. The weather was like being at the shore. I went shopping with Mom first thing in the AM and got a new bathing suit and some bras. I was happy because I needed to get these things before my vacation.
I came home and watched Rosie's latest blog post. I was laughing at Kathy Griffin saying that she was looking for a nursing home for her mother, preferably STATE RUN!!! LOL* Why do I love elder abuse jokes so much? Hmmm I wonder.
Later, I had to go back out and the weather was down right frightening. Driving rain, thunder, lightening- the works. It turned very dark outside. It reminded me of that familiar scene in a movie where the couple is driving, a horrible storm rages and the car breaks down. They are left walking, soaked to the bone until they finally reach a house where they can use the phone only to find out it's Dracula's castle or something. That reminds me, I should SO rent that old Dark Shadows TV series from Netflix.
Are We Being Punked?
Paris has so many eloquent fellow socialites behind her. Check out Jason "Gummi Bear" Davis, brother of Brandon "Fat Elvis" Davis- both oil heirs. Is this blonde milk toast in a velour pull over shirt, serious? Did he really say he is a "strong fan in justice" and when you are a person of her "caliber" you do what people tell you? Do heirs have to finish elementary school?
God how I wish they would put Paris in gen-pop (General Population in case you never saw OZ) with cameras mounted in every corner. Really though, I'm just satisfied that a cavity search is awaiting her. You know those guards will line up that day to pull strip search duty. HEHE.
I Flip Flop
Call them what you will, rubber sole sandals, flip flips or thongs. I enjoy them immensely in the summer. Checking out the latest issue of Elle magazine today, I came across an ad for Havaianasus (pronounced ah-vai-YAH-nas). The story on them according to their website is as follows...
"Havaianas are truly, the best rubber sandals in the world. They are designed, marketed and manufactured by Sao Paulo Alpargatas S.A. The ultra-high quality of Havaianas is due to a top-secret rubber recipe created exclusively by Alpargatas. This highly guarded recipe makes the sandals soft as marshmallows, light, and highly durable."
They sell retail in a few shops nearby so I think I'll take this evening and go check them out. I also emailed the company to ask whether the pretty print inside wears off the way it does in regular flip flops. I loathe a beat up flip flop but they claim these wear like iron. I'll let you know if I end up trying them.
Update:
I found these today and I'm hooked:
Drink Up
I drink a glass of Tazo Zen green tea every morning but this week Newsweek had a small piece about the new tea in town. Have you heard of this? It's called Guayaki (Gwy-uh-KEE) yerba mate (rhymes with latte) and it comes from South America. It contains a caffeine stimulant plus more antioxidants and nutritional value than green tea. You can order it here. I've already ordered mine and I can't wait to try it.
I drink green tea, coffee, seltzer and Poland Springs water. I NEVER drink juice of any kind (including orange) or soda. Those beverages are liquid candy. If I must have a soft drink I will have caffeine-free diet coke which is like a seltzer.
Speaking of sodas, Newsweek is also running an article about the addictive qualities of Diet Coke. When I was a lot heavier I drank Diet Coke. Whenever I went out I ordered a diet coke. The article refers to a study that found people who drink diet sodas are more likely to be overweight. It explains drinking diet soda cuts back on calories only initially. Over time a person will compensate for a lack of sugar in other ways. Diet guru, Richard Simmons claims 85 percent of people that come to him to lose weight drink diet soda habitually.
I should mention that I don't drink alcohol anymore and believe me I enjoy alcohol. But now that I'm over 40, beverages are an area where I can opt for a more healthy choice fairly easily. I'm hankering for a Poland Spring right now.
Paris, the President, and Accountability: That's Hot!
"So it's finally happening: accountability. At long last, a prominent public figure is being punished for serial reckless behavior and the willful denial of its consequences. Unfortunately, the public figure in question is Paris Hilton, not George W. Bush." ~ Arianna Huffington
Now if every person who voted George W. Bush in for a second term would stand up and be held accountable, I would be happy. I believe every Bush voter should never be permitted to vote again until they complete a voter's rehab program.
Opening A Can Of Whoop Ass
"Hilton will have to say "goodbye" to dye jobs and cosmetics and "hello" to five-minute showers once a day." ~ A visitor waiting in line at Century Regional Detention Facility
It's a shame too say, but I am enjoying the prospects of Paris Ho-bag Hilton heading to prison a little too much. I guess it's American culture to build up a celebrity then watch them tumble- not that *I* was ever building her up.
I have to admit this, it's my greatest fear to be confined in such a way that I would not be able to get my roots done. I work very hard at not facing the reality of what a real 44 year old looks like. Too think of my lush auburn locks going snow white, perish the thought. Maybe Paris will dye her hair the color of her roots before she enters jail? Then again she only has about a month or so to get through. She just needs a touch up the night before she goes in. You see, I'm obsessing at the thoughts and it's not even happening to me! Maybe I do feel kinda bad for her? Nah.
Best Day Ever!
Yesterday, my niece's school had it's annual Grandparents and Special Friends Day. My Mom and I went and it was AMAZING! These little second graders are the most precious people on earth. They did a live reading from a script and I was astounded at the eloquence and expression of all the children. They each recited nursery rhymes (every verse) one by one. The sincerity of each little kid was not to be believed. The teacher handed out a sheet of paper that had then and now on the top. We had to list items relating too how second grade was for us and how it is now for children.
Jessica said, "I know it was different because you two were Catholic."
She remembered that her Grandmother and I both attended Catholic school! Don't worry we spared her the stories of how the nuns would hit the kids. It was really a fun exercise and we enjoyed hearing from the other visitors when the kids read their lists aloud.
My niece was so over-joyed and proud that we was there. She introduced us to the entire class...several times. She complimented me on my dress. I'm ensuring that special place in her heart now. I work at being a part of her life, all three of my nieces lives. It's the greatest job I could possibly have and what I spend emotionally on these kids I get back ten fold.
******************************************************************
Today is Jesse's 8th birthday and her choice for dinner was an area Japanese restaurant. Jesse is really into anything Japanese so I bought her a Japanese picture dictionary. She really liked it. I can't believe she is 8 years old already. She is such a chip off the old block, sometimes it's like I gave birth to her.
Jesse wore her kimono too the restaurant.
And finally, I'm so happy Paris Ho-bag was sentenced to 45 days. Doesn't it just restore your faith in the justice system? Her Mother is really devastated that her daughter is being held accountable. Therein lies the problem I would say. For those of you who think prison will be a cake walk for the trampy heiress, think again. She is sentenced to a county jail. Just the fact that she will have to associate with minorities in the form of prison guards will be a total culture shock. Up until now all of her sleazy, criminal friends have at least been white.
Immigrant Rights- May Day 2007
Never forget that everything Hilter did in Germany was legal. ~ Martin Luther King
I was nearing the end of work today and suddenly I noticed the traffic. I also noticed a long line of people coming down the street. Immediately I was thinking an anti-war protest forgetting that today was May Day. As we drove closer I saw the Mexican flag and read the signs. It just so happened that I was with a Mexican American and we were thrilled to offer some support. I began beeping the horn and she was waving. The crowd pumped fists and waved back at us. With police walking along side of them, their signs called for amnesty of illegals.
Today across the country people demonstrated for immigration rights. The thing I love about Mexican people is their ability to unite and sacrifice for the cause. Mexicans come to this country and do the work for very little money, it's a chance at a better life and they hang on to the hope the United States offers everyone. These people know they are working class and embrace it.
We need them especially now to to off set the wanna-be Republicans who forget they work for a living and need every pay check. The corporate kiss ass' vote in the best interest of the corporation they work for, not in the best interest of working people like themselves. These are the mules dying to be "managers."
My Irish grandmother was an immigrant. America was built with immigrants. No one is stealing jobs from anyone and yes we could have changed presidents in the middle of a war! Give up the silly arguments that prevent us from uniting and advancing as a country.
Mission Accomplished: Four Years Later Bush Readies Veto of Iraq Withdrawal
The New York Times | SHERYL GAY STOLBERG and JEFF ZELENY | May 1, 2007 08:58 AM
Democratic leaders in Congress are planning a special ceremony on Tuesday afternoon to send President Bush a bill that sets timetables for troop withdrawal from Iraq.
The timing is no accident. It comes on the fourth anniversary of the day Mr. Bush stood on an aircraft carrier under the banner "Mission Accomplished" and declared that major combat operations in Iraq had ended.
