Today In 1986

One of my all time favorite movies, "Pretty in Pink" debuts starring Andrew McCarthy, Molly Ringwald and Jon Cryer, with a valuable lesson I have lived by and benefited from, "Don't waste good lip gloss."

The Oscars: Let the Downward Spiral Begin

This is a shame to say but Jennifer Hudson is headed into the studio to make the album main stream music will have no interest in hearing. Poor thing, I'm not sure she is aware of what's ahead. Into oblivion she goes. Another cautionary tale about there being no guarantees in show business. She was right for THIS role people. Hello Oprah! Can I get a witness?

Poor Jennifer's horrific, so-not-high-fashion Vogue cover giving new meaning to the phrase, "Strike while the iron's hot."

*The Success Stories.....

I adored this dress. Cate Blanchett looks stunning as always.

Reece.jpg
What can I say about Reece? Living well is the best revenge ladies, you know and I know it. Revenge makes a woman gorgeous! Ryan is kicking himself all over the place, I'm sure.

Helen.jpg
I love this lady. I loved The Queen. It was my favorite movie along with The Departed. Helen Mirren looks fantastic! She has it all over so many celebs half her age. Leave it to the Brits to bring the class and elegance.

Rats!

"If they are not eating, then rats are usually having sex. Most likely, if you are in New York while you are reading this sentence or even in any other major city in America, then you are in proximity to two or more rats having sex." Nor is their copulation unproductive: "One rat's nest can turn into a rat colony of fifty rats in six months. One pair of rats has the potential of 15,000 descendants in a year." ~ Robert Sullivan (Author)

New York City is over run with RATS and that certainly is nothing new. It's a fact of life if you live in the Big Apple. They say if you want to see millions of rats at once, be there when a water main breaks! Some people are terrified of snakes I hate rats, any rodent really. When I was a kid I thought Willard was the most terrifing movie. Just the thoughts of being in close proximity to a rodent makes my skin crawl so it would only make sense that today I ordered the book Rats: Observations on the History and Habitat of the City's Most Unwanted Inhabitants. In spite of my disdain for anything that scurrys, I can't wait to see Pixars new movie, Ratatouille. This is one adorable rat tale.

Politics As Usual

I have said it before and I'll say it again, Bill Clinton single handily turned me against the Democrats. I can't stand either party, thank you. Hillary makes me sick, she always has even when she was first lady.

Senator Obama seems like a great person however I seriously question anyone who is able to operate and succeed (which he has) in the realm of politics. I see that as a major red flag regarding a person's character. On that note, I have zero faith in my fellow citizens especially in the Midwest and south, to overlook a candidate's skin color. Racist pigs are everywhere and they have no ability or desire to enlighten themselves.

Need more proof that politics as usual is in full swing (as if this war weren't enough)? Please read the following back and forth article on Clinton and Obama from the New York Times. I do not disagree with David Geffen and I'm sure he knows first hand that of which he speaks.

Published: February 21, 2007 10:40 AM ET

NEW YORK: Maureen Dowd's column in The New York Times today, in which she quoted former Bill Clinton supporter David Geffen offering a few caustic comments, has incited a strong Hillary Clinton campaign attack on Geffen -- and the candidate he now favors, Sen. Barack Obama.

Then Obama's team fired back.

"Everybody in politics lies, but they [the Clintons] do it with such ease, it’s troubling,” Geffen had said.

Clinton campaign spokesman Howard Wolfson released the following statement this morning: "While Senator Obama was denouncing slash and burn politics yesterday, his campaign's finance chair was viciously and personally attacking Senator Clinton and her husband.

"If Senator Obama is indeed sincere about his repeated claims to change the tone of our politics, he should immediately denounce these remarks, remove Mr. Geffen from his campaign and return his money.

"While Democrats should engage in a vigorous debate on the issues, there is no place in our party or our politics for the kind of personal insults made by Senator Obama's principal fundraiser."

Obama's team responded a few hours later. Communications director Robert Gibbs just released the following statement:

“We aren’t going to get in the middle of a disagreement between the Clintons and someone who was once one of their biggest supporters. It is ironic that the Clintons had no problem with David Geffen when was raising them $18 million and sleeping at their invitation in the Lincoln bedroom. It is also ironic that Senator Clinton lavished praise on Monday and is fully willing to accept today the support of South Carolina State Sen. Robert Ford, who said if Barack Obama were to win the nomination, he would drag down the rest of the Democratic Party because he's black."

Geffen protested to Arianna Huffington today that he has no role in the Obama campaign beyond co-sponsoring his giant Hollywood fundraising event this week.

Among other things, Hollywood and music mogul Geffen had told Dowd, "God knows, is there anybody more ambitious than Hillary Clinton?" and "Obama is inspirational, and he’s not from the Bush royal family or the Clinton royal family. Americans are dying every day in Iraq. And I’m tired of hearing James Carville on television.”

More from Dowd:

-- "I don’t think anybody believes that in the last six years, all of a sudden Bill Clinton has become a different person,” Mr. Geffen says, adding that if Republicans are digging up dirt, they’ll wait until Hillary’s the nominee to use it. “I think they believe she’s the easiest to defeat.”

-- She is overproduced and overscripted. “It’s not a very big thing to say, ‘I made a mistake’ on the war, and typical of Hillary Clinton that she can’t,” Mr. Geffen says. “She’s so advised by so many smart advisers who are covering every base. I think that America was better served when the candidates were chosen in smoke-filled rooms.”

-- Once, David Geffen and Bill Clinton were tight as ticks. Mr. Geffen helped raise some $18 million for Bill and slept in the Lincoln Bedroom twice. Bill chilled at Chateau Geffen. Now, the Dreamworks co-chairman calls the former president “a reckless guy” who “gave his enemies a lot of ammunition to hurt him and to distract the country.”

-- They fell out in 2000, when Mr. Clinton gave a pardon to Marc Rich after rebuffing Mr. Geffen’s request for one for Leonard Peltier. “Marc Rich getting pardoned? An oil-profiteer expatriate who left the country rather than pay taxes or face justice?” Mr. Geffen says. “Yet another time when the Clintons were unwilling to stand for the things that they genuinely believe in. Everybody in politics lies, but they do it with such ease, it’s troubling.”

Look at My Friend Freddy!

"Every year, Broadway Cares throws a benefit in New York City (called Broadway Bares) using various Broadway and Off-Broadway dancers to perform in a one night only burlesque show (yep, HOT straight and gay boys and girls stripping down to almost nothing!!!!!) that raises money for people living with HIV and AIDS. Philly is now doing a show called Philly Dares: Simply Irresistible that is inspired by this, and yours truly has been quite involved with the show - from writing, to co-directing, to helping produce, the whole nine yards!

The benefit show will be on Saturday, February 24th. The show is at 8pm at the Gershman Y in Philly (Broad and Pine Streets, where they have Gay Bingo). The money raised from this event will go to a couple of well-deserving charities - Broadway Cares, which has raised the most money in the US for HIV and AIDS to date, and Sapphire Fund, which also does the Blue Ball event each year." ~ Fred Shelly, Director

Rage Against The Machine Lives!!

I just read that Chris Cornell quit Audioslave and I have to say I am delighted. For me it's just more hope that Rage will not only reunite for Coachella, but stay together for the time being and tour. Could another studio album be in the works? Do I need to mention how much I love Tom Morello and Zack de la Rocha again?

Single Status: It's Your Call

Last night I participated in a local cable TV talk show discussion about singles and why more than 50% of American woman are now single. There are officially more singles than married woman now. The panelists were great and here are some of the excellent reasons we came up with as to why more woman are choosing to stay single. The reasons shouldn't come as a shock if you are a daily reader of this blog.

* Woman are unwilling to settle for less than what they want in a partner.

* While many women still want to be married they are taking their time choosing a mate. Getting married in your twenties is no longer required.

* Many have seen parents in unhappy marriages and don't want to repeat that marriage.

* There are more women in college today than men and woman want a career.

* Women can support themselves financially.

* Women feel men play games when dating, have too many problems and don't make good husbands in many instances.

* Finally, there is no longer any such thing as a "spinster or old maid."

Don't You Love Mary J. Blige

I love her because she has been through it with men, had a rough childhood, survived addiction and is still singing her heart out. When she first came out she was so course. She used foul language on stage, she thought that was who she was and then she changed. She grew as a person and an artist. She found her soft, feminine side that we sometimes think we need to hide. She seems so humbled by it all and I love that about her.

Paying the Price

"People pay for what they do, and still more for what they have allowed themselves to become. And they pay for it very simply; by the lives they lead." - James Baldwin

I love that line. Nothing in life is free of charge. Spew negativity and it costs you. Maybe it's the same as you get back what you put out, but I think this line speaks to something else in me. Something more personal. Seeing some of the abuses around me I'm reminded everyday what it costs the abuser. Sometimes a person doesn't realize what they have allowed themselves to become because they are in constitutionally incapable of being honest with themselves. Denial is the inability to be honest with youself. The longer a person spins, the higher the price. It just stands to reason. And finally, let's finish the post on this note.....

Girls Gone Classy

Newsweek's cover story this week is the disgusting Paris Herpes and trailer trash queen Britney Spears. The article talks about the new "girls gone wild" culture that markets itself too young girls. Gone is the "lady-like" behaviour I was brought up with, now it's all about not wearing panties, making sure everyone knows and kissing other girls for the purpose of enticing young men.

Check out this stunning picture of Ivanka Trump leaving Hyde Saturday night. She is completely covered up in a beautifully tailored loose fitting coat and simple pumps with her hair pulled back. Audrey Hepburn revisited. She looks finishing school elegant - and the polar opposite of many young women who stumble out of the club in tiny skirts, flimsy tops and loads of hair extensions. Take note girls, this is what separates you from all the others- class and elegance. Plus, it's nice to not have to wrangle with a drug problem for the rest of your life. You can be busy doing fun things.

Still Wrecked: More on Anna Nicole

Did anyone see Larry King Live last night? Joanie "Chyna Doll" Lauer was on with demented Larry. Chyna appeared bloated and disheveled and was crying about the lose of her dear friend Anna Nicole. Cut to the CEO of Trimspa's wife who totally challenges Chyna's reasons for being there and even goes as far as to call Chyna a "stalker." The CEO's wife claims she spoke to Anna Nicole about Chyna specifically at Daniel's funeral and Anna Nicole claimed she couldn't stand Ms. Lauer. Chyna was nothing less than stunned and even though her speech was slurred, she attempted to defend her friendship with Anna Nicole.

Osman Chowdhury- Person of the Week

While some might be tempted to focus on the woman from Texas and the disgustingly cheap behaviour she displayed, I prefer to focus on the lovely cabbie who returned her possessions without any regard for personal gain. This man did the right thing simply because it was the right too do. I admire that quality.
This brings me around to another point. Tipping is a MUST. The only excuse to not leave a 20% tip is very poor service and even then, a slight tip is still necessary. If you are out and can't afford to leave a tip, #1 you should have stayed home or #2 you should not be living in the U.S. Tipping is the system we use in this country and it is how our fellow citizens are making a living. You enjoyed being waited on, right? Well they enjoy being paid.

By VERENA DOBNIK
AP

NEW YORK (Feb. 7) -- Never mind diamonds -- a New York cabbie was a Texas girl's best friend. The driver returned 31 diamond rings he found in his cab after dropping off the passenger, who had left him with a 30-cent tip on a $10.70 fare.

"All my life, I tried to be honest," said Osman Chowdhury, a native of Bangladesh. "Today is no different."

But the 41-year-old cabbie from Queens did have a message: "I'm proud of what I did so that people know New York taxi drivers are honest."

What he did started on Monday evening, when he picked up the woman at a hotel in midtown Manhattan and drove her to an apartment building several blocks away. She gave him $20 to pay the fare and asked for $9 back.

Hours later, at about 10 p.m., three other passengers with luggage discovered the woman's suitcase when Chowdhury popped the trunk open for them.

Chowdhury first drove to the building where he had dropped off the woman. But he had no idea in which of the many apartments she might be and didn't want to cause a disruption by knocking on doors.

He took the suitcase to the Manhattan headquarters of the New York Taxi Workers Alliance, a drivers' advocacy group to which he belongs. He and the alliance president looked inside and found two display cases with 31 diamond rings inside.

"I saw flashing, and I said, 'Oh my God! Diamonds!'" Chowdhury recalled. "I was shocked. I was trembling."

They also found a small luggage tag with a Texas telephone number they called -- the home of the woman's mother in Dallas. Meanwhile, she called the number, too.

The woman, who said she was a jeweler, got back the gems on Monday when she arrived at the alliance office around midnight -- incredulous at her luck. She offered Chowdhury a reward -- a check for $100.

He said it never occurred to him to keep the diamonds.

"I'm not going to take someone else's money or property to make me rich. I don't want it that way," said the soft-spoken cabbie, who was a contractor in Bangladesh until he came to the United States 15 years ago.

He does not own a cab but rents one.

"I enjoy my life. I'm satisfied," said Chowdhury, who is single.

He didn't even mind the meager tip.

"I think some people might be broke," he said. "Or they're distracted."

The woman from Dallas asked that her name not be made public.

Today's Insanity

I'm learning to enjoy the insanity that surrounds us. I've learn to take it at face value and make it fodder for my amusement. Just look, there are plenty of crazies to chose from.

First off is this insane female astronaut! She drove cross country in diapers for a man?! You know she is giving new meaning to the phrase, "lost in space." Will someone please tell me how a 40+ year-old any man is worth the humiliation of defecating in a diaper while driving yourself one thousand miles? Please. I can't stand to be in the car for more than three hours and I'm always near a restroom for my comfort.

"Can I please change my diaper now?"

@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@

Next on the insane list for today is one, Bam Margera. Yes, every ones favorite little bad ass skater boy (he's 29 freakin' years-old) got hitched this past weekend in Philadelphia. Of course what is a wedding if MTV can't be there watching Bam's trashy family join up with this girl's trashy family and become one big pile O' trash.......errr.........I mean loving family, yea. I've only seen one episode of the show entitled Bam's Unholy Union (It's unholy cause he's a bad ass skater boy ya know). In that episode Bam threatens his fiancee with plans too french kiss her mother and her sister. Klassy isn't he? Of course being Bam, he makes good on the threat and Mom's reaction (besides the obvious dollar signs in her eyes) is,

"At least I know my daughter is marrying a good kisser." Tee-Hee.

You get my point, right? Truly, I couldn't be more delighted that MTV is airing another wedding. They have aired stories of successful marriages in past. Ahhh Love!

The gloves are a nice touch huh?

Honorable Mentions Include:

* Denise Richards caught by paparazzi sniffing blow with Richie Sambora on a beach in Hawaii.

* Ryan O'Neal pulls a gun on his son as the son's 22 year-old pregnant girlfriend looks on and his other son Redmond is tied up in the next room in an effort to not smoke more PCP. Blah, blah, blah.

So your black, your poor and you live in America? There is one way to make that work for you in the land of milk and honey but only if you have some charisma and drive. Now Luda goes all Will Smith and thinks some new choppers will sky rocket his career? I think these giant plastic, fake, white things take away from the initial character he started out with, a relate-able face.

I don't care. I still don't like the sell out quality of those teef.

Atheists

Nightline Online: Take the Blasphemy Challenge
Could blasphemy really lead to eternal damnation? Click here to view.

For the last eleven years I have been submerged body and soul in a spiritual way of life. Recently, I found myself moving away from that and into another place. I'm not afraid. I value and use everything I've learned over the past years. I value the relationships I made though some have fallen by the way side. Life is a process and I see this change as just another turning point in my life, another opportunity to let go. I'm not upset, afraid or confused. Judge me if you must but I'm OK.

Being raised with a religious background I gave up on religion itself a long time ago. I have no desire to be affiliated with any religion or the bible. I don't mind people who value a religion I just chose not too par take on any level for any reason.

I don't know if I'm an Atheist. I never considered myself one but that may have been because I accepted the whole higher power concept. For today, I don't feel a need to define my beliefs or lack there of. I continue to take my feelings as they come and remain open to change.

Ad Campaign Triggers Boston Bomb Scare

It's official, the terrorists have one. By now most people have heard about Boston flying off the handle when some promotional light brights were left around the city. The mayor and other city officials did what we average citizens are told never to do and flew into a frenzy at the first sign of something blinking. Rather than a level headed approach they just whipped into freak out mode. The lights were placed around Philadelphia and New York and totally ignored. The two young men who were hired to install the lights were get this.....arrested!

What a drain on the taxpayers resources. Now these two gentlemen will be put through a legal system that should be in place for oh say..... criminals? Attorneys are at the helm and ready to prosecute on behalf of a community that barely noticed the lighting gimmick until the hype started.

In usual American capitalist pig tradition, the light brights are for sale now on eBay. Why not have a campy souvenir of Boston's mass hysteria? The events of September 11th were horrific no doubt, but must we continue years later with the fear Bush and his henchmen are selling? Don't we know by now our fear is their profit? Once again, the taxpayers foot the bill for more bureaucratic nonsense because some politician wants to save face.
