Addictive

Seriously, this snowflake making is highly addictive.

Update: I would like to update everyone on Sean Lennon's Page Six piece. Apparently it was nothing more than some drunken humor with the press. I would think that is the best way to tame the beast called the press. Go Sean!

Also: A very important filmmaker is willing to read my script! Yay!

Giving

"From my grandmother, I got ten dollars. This is the same ten dollars she has given me every Christmas since 1979. And every year she says the same thing. "Go buy yourself something nice!" It is important to note my grandmother is a zillionaire who sleeps on a bed made of money. So I took that ten dollars, went to a bar with my friends, and bought a Long Island Iced Tea." ~ Dan Renzi

Relating

I was really tickled tonight when I was reading Dan's blog and I saw that he has a cheap skate granny like me. We get fifteen dollars at Xmas, sometimes ten on a birthday but don't count on it. We use to get twenty at Christmas but that stopped about three years ago I have no idea why.

Background

My grandmother was a compulsive spender/cleaner her whole married life. Her empty house is still brimming over with knick knacks and bricka brack she amassed during her marriage. She was always the type of person who was impressed with material things. The more she had the more she wanted people to see it and envy her. She really believed people were jealous of her things. When I was a little girl going to her house was an exercise in self control. My brothers and I would take a seat on the coach and that’s where were would stay unless invited into her small kitchen. If you went to the kitchen or the bathroom it was an excuse to look at the things that lined the walls and ask, "Oh is this new Grand mom?"

Dressed to the nines with hair and nails done my grandmother rarely worked in her adult life. She wasn't the type of grandmother that you could hang out with, or sleep overnight with, or take trips with. She never left her home except to shop with her daughter. She wasn't the type who ever shopped for her grandchildren. She never just picked us up something for the heck of it. We knew never ever to ask for anything from her. I guess it was because we were taught that asking people for anything meant that you needed them and you should have too much pride to need anyone.

My grandmother never came to our house when we were kids. Never. My father would pack myself and my two younger brothers up and take us to see her and my Grandfather every Saturday. They never once attended any of our sports events or theatre productions. It's like we were brought around them at their convenience and for their amusement- not ours. As a sickly child in the hospital calling for her grandmother, I was told by my mother that Grand mother wasn’t coming to the hospital because it was too depressing for her.

Epilogue

Now she is 90+ and she spends her days in a tiny room watching the same game shows over and over. She is healthy with the exception of poor vision and hearing. Her precious things sit in an empty deteriorating house. The mice love the heat in the winter and enjoy the merriment of chewing through her many collections of owls, teddies, and dolls. No one comes to see her and no one takes her out. I don't think she would go anyway because that would be like accepting charity in her mind.

A Grand daughter’s Lesson

I'm not a wealthy Aunt, but I'm a fun Aunt. I'm at the dance recitals, swim lessons and Brownies. I take the girls shopping, I come home with treats. They run through the house like they own the place because in my mind they do anyway. I know what my nieces like and don't like and I expose them to new things so that they have much to love in life. I don't give them money, I shop for gifts and I always will until they ask me to do otherwise. I'm determined to not be what I knew as a kid. I put effort into these relationships because if the day ever comes that I see 90 (heaven forbid) I will have something money can't buy.

Message to Dan Renzi- I loved the Xmas card thank you ever so much for thinking of me! Kisses*

An Open Letter to Reality TV

Dear Reality TV-
I have to admit years ago with the first Real World you brought me back to television. The last time I had really watched TV with any zeal was when Happy Days and Laverne & Shirley were numbers one and two in the ratings. I was so over sitcom television and you got me back on board.

Now here is the problem reality television- you are no longer reality. You have become a glorified sitcom. Like the sitcom of days gone by you are following a certain format. Remember the sitcom story line of "a very special" blah blah blah episode? Or those zany sitcom episodes where someone gets bumped on the head and turns obnoxious and everyone has to cope until the next bump on the head comes. Reality TV, I'm sick of your crazy cast members that scream and rant and rave like they are having a breakdown. Of course the teasers are spliced together so that we believe people are screaming at people they don't even talk too and we tune into see the next explosion or meltdown. You're lying to us Reality TV. None of this is real spontantious action. You're like professional wrestling now and it's just as tacky and fake.

On this season's MTV Gauntlet, they are actually reinacting the same fight between, Beth, Robin and Mark as last seasons. Didn't Beth get her clothes thrown in a pool last season after unleashing her "unrehearsed" gossip? What's in store for that zany blabber mouth Beth this season, physical harm?

Celebrity Fit Club, Breaking Bonaduce as well as Being Bobby Brown are all about people who are one step away from be hospitalized. Drugs, alcohol, and eating disorders are the new sitcom. Trouble is these are mean spirited and misguided in the lack of information they provide about addiction. The Fonz had his catch phrases and Laverne had her milk and pepsi, but these programs are just all about shock and awe.

Reality TV, after last nights Project Runway dismissal of Daniel Franco in return for keeping arrogant egomanical Santino, I have to say I am really done with you. It was the last straw for me, RT. Evil won out over goodness- Darth Vader whipped Lukes ass and I lost all respect for what was once a cool show. Looks like my evenings will be free again.

Sincerely,
Elizabeth R. Fine

Oh The Irony

In my previous post I mention that DJ Marilyn are chatting away over dinner. One thing that came up was our mutual attraction for Asian men (Marilyn's b/f is Korean). I just so happen to throw in how cute I think Sean Lennon is. Marilyn agrees and the subject shifts once again as it often will with women. Low and behold I see Page Six is running a piece on Sean being available! Isn't that ironic... I mean really. So I shot off an email to Richard Johnson and asked him to forward it to Sean if he was really interested in meeting new people. Now of course no one can guarantee a love connection, but I figure one can never have enough real true friends and taking a risk is always a good thing, right? Here is the email I sent...

Subject: Sean Lennon

Hello Richard-
I caught Sean's request on Page Six. I know how Sean must feel. He has access to so much and yet what does it mean if your lonely? Please suggest to Sean that he check out my blog and MYSPACE account. There he will find the true Elizabeth Fine. I've always been a fan of his music and that is reflected on my blog. I am currently writing my first screenplay and if nothing else at least Sean and I could strike up a friendship. I am giving you my info to pass along just in case this request is real and Sean is really in a frame of mind to reach out.

Warmly,
Liz

Rock This Town

Well my baby and me went out late Saturday night
I had my hair piled high and my baby just looks so right
Well, pick you up at ten got to have you home by two,
Mama don't know what I've got in store for you
Well that's alright 'cause we're looking as cool as can be ~ Stray Cats

Last night I went to the Latest Dish for dinner with Marilyn. The menu was wonderful and dinner was scrumptous. We talked about relationships and the idea of being a whole person before you attempt a relationship, so many people are divorced. Why is that? Maybe they think love is being shoved up a person ****. Maybe it's because love comes with all kinds of expectations for the other person's happiness? Geez, I sure hope no one ever thinks I could handle that job. Anyway, Marilyn is happy. She is with a wonderful guy and I'm trilled someone is getting it right. That gives me hope if I ever walk down that path.

After dinner, Marilyn and DJ Robert Drake were spinning at Fluid. A club on a Tuesday night is a fun thing, believe me. God, I felt like I could cry hearing that 80's and New Wave stuff. Gary Numan, The Clash, Human League, Psychedelic Furs, Duran Duran, Bow Wow Wow, Flock Of Seagulls and ABC. I can picture those videos in my head on MTV. Britney Spears wasn't born yet! New York City and the downtown scene, my ex boyfriends...*sigh*. How I miss the 80's. Funny how I forget how hard those days were. Two part time jobs, no health insurance, Reaganomics. Sounds like these days doesn't it? HAH!

My goal in life back then, was to have my hair as high as Brian Setzers.

As I hung out in the DJ booth (definately the best seat in the house) I observed the change in fashion from the 80's. A lot women want to capture the feel of the 80's for the evening and thats so cool, but some differences that I recall are the pants for one... pants were straight leg, no flairs like today. The 80's saw a great deal more accessories...a lot more! Hats, gloves, bracelets, chains everywhere. I did see some gents that were sporting the hands covered and a hole at thumb locking the sleeve down, thats hot. NO HEELS back in the 80's. maybe a kitten heel, but lots of flat loafers happening or Doc Martins. Yea it was so fun to be there and relive those golden years. One other thing I observed is the cigarette smoke doesn't bother you when your in the DJ booth! hehe!

See the evenings playlist after the jump.

Imperialism Matters

Remember how bad things looked to us in this video? Now think about this.....$2.17 a gallon for gas. A war rages on. Bush's policies on medicare and free trade and tax cuts for the wealthy. Pretty frightening isn't it? How much worse will it get? Can you afford to heat your house as warm as you like this Winter? Are you bothering to educate yourself on the issues in time for the next election?

Holiday quote..."It's hard being a diamond in a rhinestone world."

Last night I saw the most hysterical holiday show courtesy of Philly's own Dumpsta Playas. Usually around the holidays I find myself sitting at a concert with music by Handel and while I love that, Dumpstas was a refreashing change of pace. The stage, the lights and the tremendous actors brought to life the thrills of a dysfunctional family Christmas. If you are in the Philadelphia area don't miss their next live performance on Feb. 15, 2006.

This year I can expecially relate to dysfuntional family Christmas'. My brother's "girlfriend" is already threathening to tell our entire family off if we say anything to her that she doesn't like. Whoa! This should be fun huh? I can't wait to see what this class act deems inappropriate. They both have already announced that they don't want to exchange gifts. Why are they coming over for Christmas again? More on that drama as it unfolds but if you don't read about it here, look for us on Jerry Springer- Raw.

Speaking of a great family drama, I hear the Brown Family Christmas caused quite a stir when Bobby Brown announced on his holiday special that there was no Santa. Why would anyone let their children watch this show anyway? The Brown's are so ghetto fabulous though aren't they?

Tonight's events- Have dinner with Christina and exchange gifts in an attempt to grab a little saniety before the crazy people set in. Jeanna bailed on us because she is under the weather. GET WELL SOON JEANNA, YOU BITCH! XOXO

No Smoking!

Last night I went out to Fluid kicking and screaming all the way. It had been a long, trying day and I was in no mood for life, let alone clubbing. But I made a commitment and I wanted to honor that so I went. It seemed like everyone in the place was smoking. It was so smothering I couldn't get away from it. I sat at the bar then the near the dance floor, no use people were smoking even smoking there! I lasted an hour...I swear one hour! I snapped some pics, gasped for air and split.

Truthfully, one other thing really bothered me about this place. Ok I hope you had your breakfast already because this is nasty. The club was tiny, and when I say tiny I mean miniature tiny. There was one unisex bathroom and ok I can deal with that normally. Two stalls and guys and girls use either one privately, right? Wrong, think again this was one bathroom with two uninals and one toilet in a gapping stall. Are you following me here... so let's say I'm on my second drink and now I have to pee, I have to walk into a bathroom past what could possibly be TWO men peeing at a urinal? Oh no I don't think so, sorry Fluid nightclub you have the wrong girl here. I have no desire to see that! Too much information for this one. Then I have to see you back on the dance floor holding your beer when I just saw you holding your.......... stop! I can't think about it. I knew right then and there I would not be drinking in that place. I had one diet coke, snapped some pics and cut out, sneezing my head off all the way home.

Project Runway Season 2

The new season of Project Runway has started and I'm happily addicted once again. I think this new batch of designers is even more talented than last season with the exception of Jay, who I adored from day one.

Santino is genuinely gifted, but aren't we all tired of the bitchy queen routine? Who would want to work with this man? Shouldn't we all be doing our part to squash bitter queens the world over? I know I have had my fill of bitchy queens (Holla)! Santino needs to be cut, for the sake of congenial, respectful people everywhere.

I am SO loving Daniel Franco. this is his second season back and he is doing amazing work. The complete antithesis of Santino, Daniel is hardworking, humble and gracious. He has earned this season on so many levels and I would love to see him make it to the end.

Kirsten refused to use her Hermes scarf in a challenge and was cut. What did I tell you about last season? It was all about the scarves on the designers! How could you be lucky enough to have a Hermes "chic chic" scarf and not use it? You deserved to be out hunny, sorry.

Chloe is an amazing designer. I think this girl could whip a lovely dress together out of a roll of toilet paper. I watch her work and I am mesmerized.

Another favorite is Diana. This woman is the real thing. She loves science and fashion and incorporates them in sync. She is so innovative. I don't know if she will make it to the end, just because commercialism is a factor, but she is really extraordinary to watch each week. Let's hear it for the nerd factor.

Finally there is the always elegant, Tim Gunn. Tim's insights are always dead on. He knows exactly what the judges are going to zero in on and he is right there, like a guardian angel helping the designers avoid the pitfalls of being ousted. Check out his blog if you are really a fan of Tim's insights. I love him and I tune in each week just to hear his nurturing voice.

Wash That Man Right Outta Your Hair

Your girlfriend has loads going for her- looks, brains, money and a hot bod. Sometimes you even wonder why shes hanging out with you then suddenly the truth rears it's ugly head. Your gorgeous friend is a loser magnet. Thats right, the lower he falls on the evolution scale the more "in love" she seems to be. You try like any good friend would, to point out the obvious- he has several kids by several different women, he never got around to marrying any of them, he hasn't held down a job in several + years, oh then there was the little stint in rehab. Nope she won't hear of it. You're just jealous because you didn't find this stud first. When all else fails there is only one thing left to break through your friends denial and here it is. I just wonder if it will work.

Punk Rock Flee Market

Yea, can you believe a punk rock flee market?! And I actually drug myself out of bed early Saturday morning after a Friday night of partying. Two minutes in the door and I scored an amazing handmade scarf with a reprint of the Beatles on it. I got loads of radical buttons, gorgeous pink earrings and a stunning clutch that I carried out that evening for more celebration with friends. All of the items were one of a kind handmade by talented artisans here in the city of brotherly love. I was glad I got there early because the place filled up fast and the isles were very narrow. The lighting was awful and I was really there for the clothing which made looking rather strenuous. Overall it was a great time and later in the evening, I got to wear all my beautiful new things.

A Very Happy Birthday

glitter graphics

If you want to hear talented bands have a DJ friend point you in the right direction. Last night was so much fun at the Kyber with local celeb, Marilyn Thomas AKA DJ Pussy Galore. We met out front of the Kyber and went inside to explore the musical sounds of She Wants Revenge and The Lovemakers. Both California bands were extraordinary.

Marilyn describes She Wants Revenge as a modern day Joy Division and they were out of this world. Signed to Geffen Records their LP drops in January. The music and vocals were phenomenal and the stage performance was HOT. The Lovemakers do electronic/rock dance music with passionate, sexually overt lyrical hooks. These guys really put out, even down to lead singer, Lisa Light leaving the stage to dance with the audience. I bought their CD after the show.

Our new elegant and handsome French friend Hamid bought me a birthday martini and we all toasted. DJ Marilyn promises things are really going to be jumping off in Philly in 2006; even to the point of New Yorkers escaping to here for a welcoming creative outlet. Here’s hoping this evening was a sign of all the great things to come for all of us.

The kicker today is my job cancelled work due to the snow! The Divine Miss Jimmi tells me, "Like a liar at a witch trial, you look good for your age."

I Am So In This Week

Tomorrow marks another year of my life. Earlier in the week I wasn’t thrilled. I wasn’t in the mood for a birthday, let alone my own. Silly me. You knew that feeling would pass didn’t you? Suddenly, I’m seeing the Lovemakers later tonight. I’ve been dying to catch them. Friday night, it’s Grape Street Pub for more partying and Saturday I’m going out for dinner. I’m tired all ready but I’ll make the scene all dolled up- come what may.

Some pretty damned amazing things happened to me this past year. Let’s reflect shall we? First off, I got published in the cool female musician mag VENUS. Believe it or not the photo I took for the piece is what I’m most proud of. The editor hit me up for a photograph last minute but my concept worked.

I had such a great time hanging out with Riot Folk Collective and Tom Morello in NYC. Tom is my guitar/activist idol. Right now my brother has my guitar and he better not forget to return it.

Work related stuff usually leaves me under whelmed, but this past year I trained for and received my commercial drivers license (CDL). I love driving. On gorgeous days, it doesn’t feel like a job, the pay is awesome and I have summers off. RAWK!

Lot’s of other things came and went. Letting go and moving on is no minor feat and I’m rather proud of my progress in that area. I deeply appreciate my real friends today. I’ve stayed open and I take risks, but I require the best of the best for myself. I take no shorts. Not everyone is healthy enough to have a front row seat in my life.

Between working with children and my three nieces I’m around a lot of kids now. They are so great I can not tell you how much I laugh with them and how much good energy they give off. Kids are really a blessing. Get some in your life if it is at all possible. They make me a better person on a daily.

In the coming year I want to continue taking risks. This is my life and if I don’t make it an adventure then it’s my lose. I love the lyrics in this Gwen Stefani song...

Tick-tock, tick-tock
Tick-tock, tick-tock

Like a cat in heat, stuck in a moving car
A scary conversation, shut my eyes, can't find the brake
What if they say that you're a climber

Naturally, I'm worried if I do it alone
Who really cares, cause it's your life
You never know, it could be great
Take a chance cause you might grow
Oh, ah, oh

What you waiting for

Thanks Jordan! *I would also like to add that meeting Michael Musto of the Village Voice and VH1 fame was a huge thrill. I'm a very big fan of his and he graciously sent me b-day wishes.

Harajuku Style

I'm fascinated by the Japanese fashion scene
Just an American girl, in the Tokyo streets
My boyfriend bought me a Hysteric Glamour shirt
They're hard to find in the states, got me feeling couture (it's really cool)~ Harajuku Girls by: Gwen Stefani

Gwen sings about it, the world over is imitating it and I've been wanting to post about Harajuku style for quite some time. The first time I saw amazingly fashionable Japanese girls was in Hawaii. They were a gorgeous sight to behold and I was spellbound. They were shopping like mad for all the designer stuff and wearing it in eye popping ways.
Fruits is a magazine about Japanese street style I discovered a while back. Guys are as into it as girls. Now that Harajuku style is taking center stage, you may wonder how an American is supposed to translate the look and still be taken seriously. Two factors I have noticed since studying Harajuku style is first, layers and the second is color. Sure an American is going to tame the look but the influence is still present. Check it out for yourself and play if you dare.

I watched two really good movies from Netflix this past week. Cold evening, hot chocolate and a classic murder mystery. I get lost in these kinds of old films. I'm concentrating on the clothes and the hairstyles, the plots. It's all great fun!

I'm in awe thinking of these murders taking place in the 40's and 50's. The villains don't have nearly the resources one would have at hand these days. They pick up a phone and get the operator on the other end! Clearly newspapers and libraries are the only sources of information for victim and perpetrator alike. Why back then it took sheer wit to get these crimes off the ground, not to mention loads of blackmail material. That wouldn't work in today’s world either. No one really bothers about what is in someone’s past.

The first movie was Dial M for Murder starring Grace Kelly. A tricky murderer is on the loose and he seems to have covered all his bases or has he? This Hitchcock film is based on a play. The entire plot takes place in one room, but trust me it’s never boring or confining. As the suspense unfolds, the plot pays off in an edge of your seat way.

Secondly, was Hitchcock's Shadow of a Doubt starring Joseph Cotton. I really think this is my new favorite Hitchcock film. The suspense is unbelievable and the acting is terrific. Small town America gone all horribly wrong when evil rolls into town to stay. Rent this movie you won't regret it. The plot delivers from start to finish and the viewer is reminded to be careful what you wish for. Under these circumstances there is a lot to be said for peace and quiet.
