They say we have to look back at history in order to learn from it and I believe that. This past Friday night Ivan and I went to the Ritz to see George Clooney's latest film, Good Night and Good Luck based on the events of CBS and Edward R. Morrow taking Senator Joe McCarthy to task and shutting him down, back in the fifties. McCarthy rounded up and created a witch hunt for "card carrying" communists. People were fired and blacklisted and scandalized. Fear was everywhere and the government was using it to their advantage. Sound familar?
Clearly Clooney the screenwriter and director of the film, was illustrating similarities with today's terror alerts and the governments ability to profit whether its from rebuilding a town after a hurricane or getting into bed with oil wealthy countries. I especially enjoyed the directors use of actual hearing footage. He could have used actors, but the black and white footage was so authentic and very chilling. A suprise attraction for me was an excellent performance from Robert Downey Jr.
